'elaxing at outdoor concert l l l Freshman orientation traditionally kicks offthe beginning of another year of academ- ics in the Boro. The multi-faceted ex- travaganza is geared to promote the cultural and social aspects of college life along with the many extra-curricular activities open to students throughout the year. Making friends while waiting in the traumatic dropfadd line, getting one's l.D. becoming a social security number instead of a person are all part of the week long scene. The standout, stickout in the minds of most would probably be the multitudes wait- ing in lines. Flalph, a hypnotist, discos, dance bands, banquets and picnics were all integral parts of the get acquainted atmosphere which prevailed during those three hectic days. Navy Band Free Concert Guthrie Comes to I ffe This land is your land, this land is my land, from California to the New York Islands, to the redwood forests, to the Gulf Stream Waters, This land is made for you you and me . . . We've all heard or sung it, but who said it? The who is Woody Guthrie, and his live and song was America. In a brillant, one-man performance entitled i'Woody Guthrie: A Child of Dust Actor Tom Taylor fittingly opened the Division of Fine and Performing Arts 1977- 78 Fall Festival. Thursday night, September 22, 1977, some of Guthrie's America visited Glassboro State College. Using only string guitar, harmonica, mouth organ and simple monologue, Taylor vividly traces the life history of the famous Oklahoma folklorist from 1912-1950. The audience becomes aninvisible listener as Woody innocently explains to his friends where babies come from. A rhythmic medly of foot-stomping, knee-knocking 'trailroad blues follows as Taylor begins to unravel the eccentric life story of Woody Guthrie. Hard Times , a tender ballad written about wander- ing period in Woody's life, highlights the youth's life struggle to find truth and meaning. Clad in wrinkled white painter-like trousers, a faded blue shirt and weather-beaten boots, Taylor recreates his idol's dusty travels through Texas. The Dust Bowl Songs , a series of light-hearted songs interludes mixed with scattered dialogue, reflect the Oklahoman's fleeting impressions of the deep South and its infamous sand storms. The second act finds Guthrie in New York City, HA pile of bricks surrounded by water . Taylor in f'You can't Scare me, l'm Sticking to the Union, and t'This Land Was lvlade for You and lVle, subly reveals the lorist's personal philosophies in a musical couplet. t'l'm out to make you take pride in your work and land, Taylor chants, and l'm proud to say: long, its been good to know you. la. truly was good to meet you, Mr. Guthrie. Af 1- Chee Se Ba nd 'if If it wasn't for the single bead of sweat running down the side of Flex Fowler's cheek, you'd swear the whole thing was effortless. Aztec Two Step is an almost meek group that doesn't try to impress you with a lot of flashy theatrics. Their concert Sunday night at Esby Gym was casual and low-key but very very good. Neal Shulman and Flex Fowler are the core of Aztec Two Step, and they complimented each other nicely in a number of ways. While both play acoustic guitar and sing, Fowler is by far the better vocalist and Shulman the better guitarist. Yet there was no vying for the audiences attention. They played as a duo, with tight, precise harmony. Fowler is the country boy from Maine and Shulman the New Yorker. This accounts for the contrast in style between songs like Baking , a down home country tune and A Conversation in a Car, a ballad which in- cludes reference to the New Jersey Pike and Jim Lowe-'s MiIkman's Matinee . About half way through the concert came the Tradi- tional Seeds and Stems tlay backi portion, which in- cluded a song called t'Humpty Dumpty . lt's a story of how Humpty asks Cinderella out but she turns him down for the prince, we are led to believe that Humpty may have jumped off that wall rather than fallen. Who's to say? As an encore, Aztec sang The Persecution and Res- toration of Dean Moriarty which is one of their best cuts, based on Jack Kerovac's novel On the Road. The name Aztec Two Step, by the way, is not the way Q. io the bathroom in Mexico after drinking the ' comes from a poem by Lawrence Ferlinghetti. O it , 2 .,b,. 1 iv V ' 'Q gtg ,s W. S x X X -N. , 2 I.W'1?T5' .t - F. ,sv 1 ., Waits: Not the Boy Next Door Tom Waits is not the kind of boy you want the folks to meet. He is unshaven, uncouth and ungroomed. But on Oc- tober 13th he successfully combined these qualities with a unique musicianship to capture his audience. To anyone who was not familiar with a Waits perfor- mance, his appearance at first served as a bit of a shock. A wrinkled gray suit, scarred with white smudges, hung limp on his emaciated body. His skinny black and white tie and the decrepit black hat comically com- plimented Waits as he strode on stage, grabbed the mike, and began the late night performance. Step Right Up , a fastpaced jazz number, was deli- vered inthe classic Waits style-rasping from the back of his throat and finger snapping to a syncopated beat. Puffing on his Marlboro cigarette, Waits discussed many of his feelings about love with a tinge of defiance in Emotional Weather Report. He puffed on to tell the story about Small Change who got rained on with his own .38. A singer Waits is not, but his affectiveness as a poet was evidenced in many of his songs dealing with the unhappy lives of whores, drunks, and the lonely. A sol- itary sailor dreams of a waitress with Maxwell House eyes, marmalade thighs, and scrambled yellow hair, Waits crooned. One of the highlights of the singer's performance, The Piano Has Benn Drinking, a comical ballad relat- ing the effects of too much alcohol, was sung to discor- dant notes on the piano. Waits concluded his second GSC appearance with WaItzing Matilda, a song filled with as much human understanding as the man himself. Jerry Rubin Jerry Rubin, once a bomb-toting, fire-spitting politi- cal radical ofthe 60s, very calmly and confidently told his audience Monday night October 17, that he is now incorporated and expects to make plenty of money. The almost-full Student Center Ballroom hushed when he mentioned he made a million dollars last year. The more money I make, the more I have to change things, Flubin said, flashing his eyes from face to face. Rubin has taken on a new cause. Clean-shaven, hair cropped, dressed in baggy pants and sweater, he sounded like a salesman giving a pitch for health foods or a preacher giving a sermon. Know yourself, be yourself, rid yourself of false egos, he said earnestly, as a few Yippies mildly taunted him from the second row. l He explained why he could not remain a Yippie forever. T The media mada me into an image. I was very pre- dictable. People would say, C'mon Jerry, put on your tape, he jeered as he placed a mock tape on a mock tape recorder. The moment Yippie became a role, it was not Yippie anymore. i And there were the contradictions of the radical role such as the way they treated women. V The men would be discussing politics and the women would be serving the drinks. The whole thing 'vas a macho trip. If you did not have a gun or a bomb, lou were not a radical. But though he scorned his once-macho theatrics. me was most entertaining and animated when he talked of his antics and ideologies of the 60s. 5 Jerry Rubin says he has grown up and is far from 'acting out his macho, John Wayne wishes, although tome people just don't want to believe it. l l l l l l .1:3, i.-f 1.1 . i-1 rqf'4,.,ry-'i.',...1x . College President Mark M. Chamberlain and AFT President Rose Glassberg each received 250 lemons the morning of October 18 in a student effort to demon- strate that signing faculty evaluations is a sour idea. Initiator of the campaign was SGA Senator Shawn McGrath, who said 'tIt's a graphic way of showing the faculty and administration exactly how we feel. Lori Zimmerman, art senator, said, SGA needed to do something like this to get its point across. Senator Maureen Lewis said, We're reaching other O students this way since many students wouldn't have even known about the issue. SGA opposed the idea of signing the evaluations be- cause the situation was the result of local action and was not a statewide agreement. In addition, SGA said serious questions concerning liability protection for students can be raised along with reprisals for honest, if negative evaluation. SGA agreed to call upon the faculty and administra- tion committee to negotiate the faculty evaluation sys- tem. A joint student, faculty, and administration com- mittee to negotiate the faculty evaluation process for the future was recommended. bf 'Q 2 W .ffl fkf gl .1 J,-71 f I I 1 ' ' 3 , XP. 4 5: X usual c Il IJW1 ' if 'rv 1 I, U ll Us 'M 5 09 w, 'xx f I .A A , u v :Xiu :AJ if I' I f f-. ll pa I K, I 1 I I I g I ' . N Romeo and Juliet Duelling with authentic Renaissance rapiers resounded on the Wilson Concert Hall stage when the Campus Players presented Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet on October 13, 14, and 15th, 1977. The fight scenes were excellent, and de- picted grace, skill, and the actors' agility in recreating the Renaissance duelling. Costumes were stunning and fitting to each characters role. The royalty looking like royalty and the servants looking like servants as their robes lacked the extrava- gance and bold color ofthe upper echelon. Underthe direction of Dr. Michael F. Kelly, the cast included both faculty and students as follows: Romeo-Ron Browng Nlercutio-Alan Harris, Benvolio-Donald Case: Capulet-William Norrisg Paris-William Esherg Tybalt-Mark Brewerg Friar-Lawrence-William Juliet- Bonnie Sue Duckmang Nurse-Karen Kinney: Lady Capulet-Diane Fisher. Students disguised themselves as everything in the book and then some at the kick-off celebration, Lost in a Masquerade. Down in the Rathskeller, students munched on peanuts, downed slews of sloshables and listened to Dan Vesheshky play Billy Joel tunes on the piano. The eisel of colors, synonymous with this world fa- mous ballet bought the spice of the exotic southern country to Glassboro. The performance was accompanied with the exqui- site and talented Mariachi band, trios, marimbas, and the Jaracho Quartet. Mexican polkas, hat dances and regional folk sequences were executed with precision. Algeria Nortena is a fast-paced, foot-stomping square dance featuring mixed dancers garbed in the traditional Texan cowboy outfit and gold floral skirts. The Jaracho, complete with violins, string guitars, and requintos, provide high-pitched background music. Extravagant outfits added to the flavor when Vera- cruzana, the Fiesta Del Verado and Viva Jalisco dance steps were performed. Q ,. 13 93 is ! as Ai 5 - 'aah IX! 'a . Their reasons for seeing this man were varied, his reputation, his name, and their own convictions about mind power kept them glued to the seats in the packed room. A round of applause welcomed the man. He first explained he had been taping a Mike Douglas show, his 100th appearance, to be seen on T.V. shortly. He then began his act, amazing the audience by guessing personal facts about them written in sealed envelopes. His definition of ESP was taking ones abilities and raising them to a higher threshold . Using his higher threshold , he located his payment check for the performance, hidden by four members of the audience, in the bottom of a pocketbook, in less than two minutes. I believe in ESP , Kreskin remarked. Hypotism was then brought into the show. Hypnotism , he explained, is the process of mind control in which your body reacts to your mind, which has the ability to respond to suggestion. About 20 people reinforced his theory by waving their hands, getting pinched, and sticking to their chairs, through hypnotism. Two standing ovations proved that Kreskin had convinced many in the audience to believe in the powers of the psychic world and also the abilities of the Amazing Kreskin . 51 1 J 52 Pantomime ,r fb .S 2 it R, NNSNN' vu Xp. 5 3 , Z, l u NIHS'MVllE7'lH73vm-1'xi'l'nlixHlilif1WW1EiY.EXH'.'Mill'BU:'lEEiliU!HlUil!illlllulhliil'.lllLlIIlll'l!lUl4 !5MEEEELKlllll'IiEH5JIiII3HIVl,HHIJHHIKIIIIKIHIJIIHHHIlHYHIll551i'ISIEiilHJiiEi1HEBEZI Hlllil IIRIIEIIIHHOIHIIfilllflkkhINIUEIHIHIHIHIIHIIIIIHHIHIIIIHHJSIWIDB Eilfm!!HillH1!!!HIf!HIIf!PIIlTll7llIHHlIUlNl!H!Il5lT!iHlHHlTI1hm IIIZHHTHIIFFIINHHHIIn!3MlMlWliII1II1l1iIEWliiBiliiTElil'llilIlHlH.ll1I HEElH EWlNlWiW Ei?M5Ea'Bi!!EBHiHfi IimnEmf5EiiEvEETziHiin Hi1i !l7fH1BlHfIEPH7i1!H!iJlE-!B!IHEBIHIDEI!!S71EHS3H1lEH5lB!'HCBL'0i4lBlIH1lfHFlifEl1W!iWlPilFiHIiNI?EiRU5liifI!U8IlEEEilHE!!El!H S?3g?f!l!JE!1!EIEEHIIHWBHWPHQREIHH2H3T1Ef?l1E!i!l!EfUE!11I!l3EHifEl!lEZEN?-'i!E!.'?!F?!f'!?93E'1!5'YEi'EEEiii!!-llliliillkmgilit fb ' Q . But in football and to Coach Richard Wacker's Prof gridders it was the differ- ence between their score and that of the Montclair State Indians that enabled them to achieve their 4th consecu- tive NJSCAC title, finalizing their winning 1977 football season. The number that we're talking about in basketball, hockey, baseball, and Glassboro football is 3. Wackar, along with captains Ray Megill and Frank Kreider, led the Profs to a 13-10 victory over conference rival Montclair on November 11, giving GSC its crown on the last day of the season, the same day they won it in the '76 campaign. The offense, led by junior Herb Neilio and running back Dino Hall, and the defense headed by Megill, Rory Thomas, and Pete Sebastian, passed, blocked, ran, tackled, and kicked, the football for a 7-3 overall record. The brown and gold combatants of the gridiron showed some very outstanding defensive as well as of- fensive abilities. 86 we I 5. X 97 MS V if -8 X ' S 45' vii 2 Varsity Football State Conference Champions 'Wil l Shutting out Jersey City Q18-Ol, Trenton Q14-Ol, and Kean on Homecoming Weekend t38-Ol proved that the men of the defense also have a place in the paper be- sides the flashy quarterback or the sleek halfback. Ouarterbacks and halfbacks must be reckoned with, though, and Neilio and Hall deserve this reckoning. Neilio passed, handed off, and totally directed the Boro offense, after battling for the right to fill the shoes of All-Conference graduated Mike Cawley. Hall, an extremely quick man off the ball, rushed for total yards and a lot of heart as well as talent, becoming the Profs premier ball carrier. Graduation will stun Wackar's roster, but we can not forget about those who helped Glassboro to its stun- ning record. We turn our tassles to Srs. Wally Funk QOGJ, Dan Schreck tOTl, Kelvin Hopes tWFll, Lou Pet- rella and Fred Rogackl tFB'sl, and Steve Sheffield tCJ on the offensive unit, and Mike Platt QDEJ along with Howard Thorpe tMGl on defense. Winning the title by 3 points made the Profs realize the potent punch of the Montclair squad, but 3 isn't the number that the members of Richard Wackar's proud football team will remember. . . 41 is. 87 . 1 3 H Q A is - ' . . -,P+ ' if ' ' 'ff-75 cirf N1 Q M, N 1 1 4 x : 'ov N N 1:4 KY- 1-wu ix N X -x N 849 - ... -....... ....... ,. -f W -E.
