V ' H X i ill' lil tenure has been one of the maior problems this year at glassboro state. both faculty and students have voiced their concern over the issue, citing as their goal, excellence of education. should the period be extended before tenure is granted? should the entire college situation rule over individual merits? if so, then should tenure be abolished as irrelevant? these questions must be answered not only in new jersey but nation- wide. it is the hope of the image that these issues may be satis- factorily resolved - the institution cannot bear up aca- demically under another glassboro '7l. ? -V--me' GZ'-1-Q' f 'fliisii ' .Lf ,Sf 3 .mf wg-xg f . ag .Hi-5. also, gov. cahill, you should get a copy of pre-registration procedures-fall: 1971 glassboro state college. with your good education and lots of patience and time, you and your son or daughter would finally muddle through it. i used a magnifying glass, a pot of coffee and 10 finger- nails before i would make sense of it. it's been 25 years since i got out of the army and i wasn't ready for the 24 hour army clock used on the form. can you imagine trying to make sense out of a course given between 1700 and 1845 hours? also, the instructions of this form read that your pre- registration is complete when you have returned the card, in person, to the registrar. in person. don't mail it, right? fortunately for me, i was not working on a particular day and mary and i rode to glassboro expecting a short once over of the form with someone. to our amazement we were instructed to drop the form into what looked like a shoebox with a slot on it sitting on the counter. do we discuss this with anybody? i asked. lust drop it in the box and you can leave, was the reply. outside, we passed two sets of parents who were deciding whether to take the college apart or not. from their conver- sations we gathered that the fathers had taken a day off from their jobs and had driven 130 miles from the northern part of the state just to drop a card into a box. can you imagine trying to make sense out of a course given between 1700 and 1845 hours? which brings me to a concluding complaint. after my daughter and my wife and i spent hours figuring out that tentative schedule, we got word in the mail last friday that two of the courses were closed . a supporting letter explained that mary would have a chance to select other courses next week. that's fair and rea- sonable. but there was a kicker. are you ready? the eighth paragraph in the letter says, a 55 change of program fee will be charged at the time of schedule adiust- ment. pete finley Camden courier post venue sept 71 V51 home is where the vote is it you are at least 18 years old before nov. 3 and you plan to vote in the november elections, you only have until sept. 23 to register. a check with glassboro borough clerk, carl halpin, last week indicated his office is very busy registering new voters, including students. however, there is a catch. a student must have a fixed domicile where hefshe lives. that means if you are living in a dorm, chances are that you will not be able to register to vote in glassboro. last may, a ruling in superior court of new iersey said that a 20-year-old seton hall dorm student could not register from his dormitory address because he failed to prove that was his fixed domicile. to accomplish this the court held that a would-be voter must not only live there, but must make a home there. it noted that a residence is not a domicile. ruled on until after the voter registration deadline of sept. 23. he wanted no one to be left without a place to vote. register at home until the law can be changed. already 500 gsc students have registered to vote in glassboro, according to ballistreri. as far as we know only 700 gsc students are able to register in gloucester county, he added. we want to register everyone we can. we have even received offers of help from the gloucester county league of women voters and the jaycees to take buses to the college to pick up students and take t them to the borough hall to register, he said. a mobile registrar may also be on campus later this week. one is already due to go on the gloucester county college campus soon. this means you can reg- ister to vote on campus. i i t i 1 l i u i 4 ,QI ti' i g. ll if W it ' 1 lt I H' if lr lllt HI in this student's case, the court noted that the plaintiff had no key to his dormitory, took his clothes away during the summerg had his grades sent to his parents' address at home, and used their address for his employment, social security, driver's license and records. accorclsng to nick ballistreri, gloucester county commissioner cf registration, l0 to 15 people who live in gr'arsst:oio state college dorms have been per- mitted to register lrom their dorm addresses, because they have mzicle the alarm their 'fixed domicile. in order to establish a learning :enter one should first have a real library. the publicity about this proposed center was sent out at an estimated cost of about 3500. this could have been better spent on providing the free service for the copying machine for a while, or for purchasing books or periodicals. b. as a direct consequence, the stoppage of free duplicating service has caused an increase in the amount of page ripping and book thefts. assuming each book to cost S10 to purchase and catalog, how many machine copies could be given away freely for an unnecessary assumed loss of 100 books? mr. rowell, in a conference with me, has agreed to suggest to the student government to purchase two machines with service contracts and charge only 5 cents per copy until the principal has been real- ized. then the price can realistically be lowered to 2-3 cents per page, which can then be easily absorbed by the library. why must we continue to pay 10 cents to xerox per copy? c. it seems that in order to establish a graduate school capable of offering pro- grams in subiect matter areas, extensive holdings of specialized books and iournals in various disciplines are necessary. the incomplete sets of iournals should first be completed and subscriptions updated. d. pilfering can be minimized by more effective and efficient security measures. the time has come for us to conserve what we have and build on this scant collection. e. massive reductions of budgets along with increased pilfering will shortly shrink our stock. more funds must be immediately found to match the increase in the number of students and in-depth studies. 3. infirmary a. chronic student complaints have been about inadequate medical treatment at the infirmary, several have expressed lack of confidence in this health center. an inspec- tion of the infirmary will reveal inadequate facilities in terms of drug medication, emer- gency equipment, and number of patient beds. the need for qualified medical per- sonnel an the college grounds for emer- gency and general health problems is sadly lacking. how many full-time staff physicians do we have? how many regis- tered nurses? what is the budget of the infirmary? which emergency drugs do we stock? do we have an oxygen resuscitator? can we handle patients with diabetic and epileptic shocks? can we handle heart ar- rests and a variety of other emergent conditions? do we have an ambulance? fa resolution passed by the faculty senate called for the immediate purchase of one more than a year agol. are nurses avail- able around the clock, 7 days a week dur- ing the regular semesters to handle the health needs of resident students? how many part-time and full-time physicians are officially connected with the infirmary? do we have referral services for dental and allied medical care? do we have psychiatric help or referral service? are we equipped to deal with venereal disease? do we have an effective drug clinic? does the full- time physician of this college give time to students during his private office hours? does he charge for this service? is a stu- dent permitted a certain concession com- pared to a private patient? how many students have utilized this privilege of visit- ing the physician during his private office hours? is a college physician required to be present during intercollegiate sport ac- tivities? if so, does he fulfill this require- ment? i am told that aspirin is a common remedy used for a multitude of ailments. but aspirin alone will not cure the medical problem at glassboro state college. the current answer to most of these questions is na but you can change it to be yes. 4. book store a. is the book store here to make profits or serve students? during the school year and especially during the concentrated summer sessions enough books must be available on the first day of each semester, so work can immediately start. several bla- tant violations can be cited from this past summer session where insufficient texts meant photocopying of appropriate chap- ters and possibly ieopardizing the student's grade who could not get the books. for example, in one specific course a student had to travel to new york city at her own expense to purchase the required text book because one was not available in philadel- phia. was this necessary? can you under- stand this student's anxiety? knowing that during the first week of every semester there will be many students coming to the book store, why should a student have to stand a half day in line, only to find out that the last book was already sold out with an indefinite wait? b. how is the mark-up price of books derived? why are books at our store priced higher than in other book stores in south jersey? it seems that purchase of books in bulk would bring discounts to the students. the increased profits do not appear in improved services or enlarged premises. what happens to the profits? it is sug- gested that sga and faculty senate investi- gate the amount of profit made and its utilizations. the above conditions have no reason for their existence and can not be allowed to continue at the expense of students. 5. security force a. it seems that the security force should be increased not only in number but in skill training to match the increase in the yearly student population in the day and evening schools. b. how many automobile decals have been sold? how many parking spaces are available on the campus? it is realized that the same parking spaces may be used by any individual at different hours. however, is an instructor or a student going to a class entitled to a parking spot, who has already paid for a decal? how many peo- ple have been late to classes because of this poor facility? can a better system be devised with the acknowledgement that there are limited parking spaces. because of these conditions there are endless in- fractions of parking rules. morally, every decal holder should be entitled to a guar- anteed parking space and should be able to park his automobile within a reasonable length of time. 6. regisfrar's office with an anticipated student population increase, and the unification of the day and night schools into one common division, the following problems are being encount- tred: fat inadequate clerical help for reg- istration purposes, fbi closing of sections with hundreds of students still requesting closed courses in spite of pre-registration. a system must be devised to rectify this situation. after having given some of my concern, i ask you, the faculty senate, and the stu- dent government association an endorse- ment and a mandate. the president of the college with whom i have spoken and who has already agreed that many of these things need changing, would feel reassured that the faculty and the student body is fully in support of a unified thrust to make glassboro a better state college in new iersey. may i request, therefore, that the fol- lowing resolution be moved, seconded, dis- cussed, voted upon, and be passed onto the president of the college for immediate implementation: be it resolved by the faculty senate and the student government association that the president of the college has full support to employ all legal means and moral persua- sion necessary to alleviate the above men- tioned conditions in the present school year of 1971-1972 and request that at least a quarterly progress report be sent to the faculty senate and to the student govern- ment association, and that copies of this document along with a vote tally be sent to the members of board of trustees, all administrators, all senators of the faculty senate and student government associa- tion. syed m. husain whit 1 oct 71 Q? S m ' f Wy K Q i : 2' higher education okays hike, students stage protest tuition was raised S250 per year by the state board of higher education. students from most of new iersey's state colleges came to trenton in an attempt to prevent the proposed hike. glassboro sent a busload of 30 to 40 students, and stockton state sent a similar number. state policemen stationed in the lobby of the higher education building informed the student delegation that only two representatives from each school would be allowed into the public meeting. it was also stipulated that members of the student press would only be permitted to enter in place of one of their school's two representatives. this action left a number of students waiting outside. approximately two hours later, the board decided to move the entire meeting to a larger facility, and allow all the students to attend the meeting. unfortunately most of the students from stockton had already left for home. concerned students expressed inability to absorb the hike or secure addi- tional aid. other representatives demanded that if tuition was raised, visible improvements in the educational systems should immediately be apparent. speakers urged the board to table the motion, delaying action until the sears commission investigating tax alternatives reported, or the state legisla- ture moved on the proposed income tax increase. through this the board members seemed sympathetic, and sensitive to the students' plight. when the last member of the audience had made his points, the board took up discussion among its own members. during this time, the chairman refused to recognize speakers from the audience. alternatives to the tuition hike were discussed. however they were voted down in each case. when the final decision came, the board voted decisively, seven to three, to raise the tuition the proposed 5250, and the meeting was adiourned. doris del tosto whit 28 ian 72 Elm E00 SOOII l l l l 5 t l l november's election may be several months in the future, but it's not too soon to start planning for it and subsequent elections. for the first time, i8-20 year olds will be able to vote in a presidential election. many students, however, are not able to register, let alone vote, in the town in which they spend almost three-fourths of each year - their college town. although they would be eligible if they merely lived in a town for that length of time, they are not even eligible to vote in local elections. this situation must be rectified, and colleges must be the source of this change. the only way to effect change is through political power. student political power lies in the fact that we are now capable of expressing our opinions through votes instead of strikes. strikes merely serve to reinforce false beliefs in the irresponsibility of the college student. what is the answer? perhaps the answer lies in a strong voter registration drive to get students registered in glassboro and each of the other college towns. this effort may do the trick, even if it resulted in court cases to test rulings. as the representative organization of the student body, sga should allocate funds to finance such a drive and any subsequent actions that are ' q A necessary. l 9 g ' A Q . to bring about such a change, actions must be started now, not later. Q K3-,La 1- 1- ' 13:1-F? 9? home economics education seeks to pro- mote the effectiveness of the individual as a member of society and the family in the self- actualization process. it synthesizes knowl- edge drawn from its own research, from the physical, biological, social and behavioral sciences, and applies this knowledge to help promote the well-being of individuals and families in society. the department, headed by dr. helen mcconnell, utilizes the areas of studies to pre- pare the students for family living in a changing society, with opportunities for home economics professions, or occupations utilizing the skills and knowledge. both men and women are now involved in the program, with many non-majors also enrolled in classes. an elected student advisory board works with the faculty to investigate suggestions to increase the effectiveness of classes and other learning situations. the department will hopefully soon offer a liberal arts home ec. major for those inter- ested in the industry, fashion design and other non-education fields. also more ad- vanced, specialized courses will be offered. responding to the current de-emphasis of mass teacher education, the department, only seven years old, is moving to expand its horizon in this expanding field. 2' 'SM 1 -gi ,f , f- yzggap.. X 3 ..i ' in if you should by chance wander down to that off limits building called esbiornson gymnasium - and yes, seniors, it didn't fall down after your freshman year - at any time of the day, you'll find a wealth of activity. besides the freshman follies - more properly known as the service classes - you can find the graceful football players tripping over dance classes, an actual bull's eye in archery, someone caught off guard in fencing, a perfect cartwheel minus the crushed head, or a person who can actually horizontally cradle that lacrosse ball. once in a while you can catch mr. surfastini, the head coach of the whole big team called the health and physical education department, in a smashing game of handball in gym 3. down around suppertime, while the rest of the campus concentrates on answering the grumbling warnings of empty stomachs, those dedicated people - yes, people and not ani- mals as some of you non-maiors think - are beating their bodies to the pulp trying to get up a winning season in basketball, football, hockey, gymnastics, track, and even soccer. and while everyone is settling down for a quiet evening of studying Ui, the intramurals program starts. it's about this time that you might see one or two interested non-maior upperclassmen in the vicinity participating in co-ed swimming, badminton, women's gym- nastics, men's basketball, karate or iudo. that's a pretty full schedule which the w.a.a. fwomen's athletic associationj and the m.a.a. Qmen's athletic associationj under the athletic board, who sponsor all interscholastic and intramural programs, are carrying. it's a wonder the members of these organizations, both majors and non-majors, don't run out of ideas and energy ibut those phys. ed. majors never run down their batteries, do they?l to add to the professionalism of the whole affair, pi epsilon, the maior's organization, runs its own program of meetings and social functions fyou've got to get some culture and refined activity through to themlfl. this goes on all week long - and even on weekends for those unfortunates who are con- demned tothe lonely vigil on campus through- out the year. and to culminate the year of bruises, pulled muscles, and brainstraining, two big productions take place. the first is the glassboro annual indoor games, some- what like the glassboro olympics, sponsored by the physical education maiors. and to top off the excitement, the varsity awards are given at the w.a.a. and m.a.a. awards ban- quets. the rest of the second semester fizzles out on the tennis courts in the hot sun, only to be revived by the old rains of the glassboro grey next september. barbara karnay-physical education mr. edward dear 5 'vivu if .EE Q5 'fy ,l l ' v A ' E ,sf 'Q I like - V0 I- ,1'?3, .fggin q i Q!-4 .H Q x if 'Q . 1 ,Q 'hi if an A .im 0 1 44 'Kew mr. iohn fox 'H- ' mm' mr. william bradley M2 miss mary pufnam , 4. We, alone with the colleve have Grown in manv ways since that first week in September of 1968. It is now our responsibility to apply what we as students have learned, in hopes of improving the segments of the world we encounter. No matter how far apart we drift in the future years, we will always hold in common the lasting bnd of our growth at Glasshoro which took only four short years to form. I along with the other class officers: James DiGennaro, Marilyn Meisler, and Diane John- son wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors. kommwy Stephen Vanderhoof the senior class would like to recognize dr. richard zahn of glassboro state college's founda- tion of education department, for his outstanding service to the class throughout their four years at glassboro state college. in memorium claude satchel 99 Y malhews music social studies thomas napolitano industrial arts senior directory li 1 1 1 . 1 1 editor's note: the activities listed are those which were participated in at some time during four years of college. a.c.e.-association of childhood education g.s.e.a.-glassboro student education association a.h.e.a.-american home economics association i.f.s.c.-inter-fraternity sorority council b.o.a.-bureau of athletics i.r.c.-international relations club b.o.c.o.-bureau of cultural organizations k.a.r.-kappa alpha rho b.o.e.o.-bureau of educational organizations m.a.a.-men's athletic association b.o.f.w.h.c.-bureau of federated women's housing council m.e.n.c.-music educator's national conference b.o.h.o.-bureau of honorary organizations r.s.a.-residence students association b.o.m.o.-bureau of musical organizations s.a.b.-student activity board b.o.sc.o.-bureau of scientific organizations s.c.e.b.-student cultural exchange board b.o.s.o.-bureau of service organizations s.f.c.a.-student faculty cooperation association b.o.s.a.-bureau of speech activities s.f.c.b.-student financial control board b.o.s.p.-bureau of student publications sga-student government association c.e.c.-club of exceptional children albright, sandra papa - b.o.f.w.h.c., sigma phi sigma. p. 90 alexander, harry - advisory board, pi gamma mu. alexandre, richard - alpha phi omega, sec. and v.p. 2, pres. 3, 4, b.o.s.o., v.p. p. 119 ammirata, amy - phi kappa nu, treas. 3, 4, p. 138 anderson, iacqueline - biology club, r.s.a., twigs, pres. 2, 3, w.a.a. p. 112 angelini, tina - kappa delta pi, n.i.e.a. p. 90 arangio, helen - kappa delta pi, math club, sigma phi sigma. p. 162 arsi, catherine - advisory board, phi kappa nu, pres. 2, 3, p. 90 bachman, robert - baseball, basketball, lettermen's club, m.a.a., math club. bailey, francine - delta omicron, m.e.n.c., opera workshop, sga, special concerts committee women's chorus. p. 168 ballinger, deborah - b.o.m.o., pi gamma mu, sec., women's chorus. baral, wendy - s.c.e.b., whit. p. 66 loarthelmess, kreni - advisory board, pi delta upsilon. p. 91 w.a.a.-women s athletic association berkey, sandra - astronomy club, pres. 4, g.s.e.a., v.p. 4, kappa alpha rho, math club, sec. 4, whit. blake, ierome - g.c.s. veteran's association. p. 91 born, sharon - advisory board, i.f.s.c., sec. 4, phi kappa nu, treas. 1, v.p. 2, 3, w.a.a. p. 91 sigma, kappa delta pi, pi delta epsilon, sec. 3, 4, oak, whit, feature ed., 2, 3, co- ed, 4. p. 138 boutilier, rita - delta omicron, m.e.n.c., opera workshop, special concerts commit- tee women's chorus. p. 168 boyle, penelope waage - art board, kappa delta pi, opera workshop, sigma phi sigma, women's chorus. p. 57 brackney, elizabeth - biology club, pres. 2, b.o.s.c.o., pres. 2, 3, 4, conservation club, pres. 2, 3, w.a.a. p. 66 butovich, ariadna - advisory board, s.c.c g.s.e.a., oak, w.a.a. p. 39 butvilla, diane - pi delta upsilon, pi ? lon, tennis, gymnastics, hockey. p. 11 cafarella, iune - advisory board gamma tau sigma. p. 139 campbell, robert - advisory boardii gamma mu, kappa alpha rho. p. 187- castellana, douglas - soccer, tau on- ph'.p.119 chewey, kathleen - phi kappa nu, sets b.o.f.w.h.c. p. 93 ciriello, iames - football, track, cross ci try, letterman's club. p. 176 cohen, rosemary foster - w.a.a., c delta pl colfer, richard - advisory board, pi chi, b.o.s.p., sga. p. 93 , 1 1 l it l, .1 ll l boston, gail - b.o.s.p., pres. 4, gamma tau 1 I fl 1, lil fc 1 k l .
