STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE GLASSBCJRO, NEW JERSEY T 1958 THE 1958 CDAK . Hwy. R 1' if-. f-I 71156 wwmmrzzrx vvyf 9' , 4 bw ALMA MATER Alma Mater, we greet thee. All praise to thy name: Thy banner unfurl to the breeze. Thy children salute thee and pledge to thy fame As soldiers who drink to the lees. All about thee arise the first temples of God, Lifting high, leafy arms to the sky. And the flowers that bloom in the green of the sod Seem to love thee too fondly to die. l.oved school, 'tis thine to impart to thy youth The wisdom within thy fair walls. May we daily teach others with courage and truth The lessons we learn in thy halls. Thou art more than a plan: thou art more than cold stone: Thou art spirit and beauty and light. And the standards we raise in the years 'neath thy dome Are the standards for which we shall fight. W 4 x-Q vw' 3' c P3 .QW i. Presiclent's Message EACH BUILDS ON OTHERS Every student who passes through Glassboro leaves something of himself behind. The sum total of all that is left behind becomes the College's traditions, history, and reputation. It becomes the most tangible part of the College, because in essence it is the College. From it comes the en- richment and spirit which refreshes and vitalizes new generations of students. The Class of T958 will take much from the College. lt will leave much, in memories, achieve- ments, and spirit. As we review the past four years, in which so much growth, change, and learning have been compressed, we realize anew that each new class stands upon the shoulders of its predecessors, and for that reason its vision be- comes keener and more creative. With this realization in mind, one can with reason say that the Class of T958 is the best class ever graduated from Glassboro. Because of your help and in- creased stature, the next class, standing upon your shoulders, should be an even better class. In such ways is progress made. To the Class of T958 we extend our best wishes and our congratulations. Each member is a friend we have learned to like and to respect. Each be- comes a representative of the college-an ambas- sador at large whose life, thoughts, and actions reflect the quality of the college which believes sincerely that teaching is fun and education is exciting. However, it cannot succeed without the understanding and untiring efforts of its class advisers. In our Junior year, we elected Mr. George Reinfeld, a truly strong and dynamic person- ality, to be our adviser. His insight and initia- tive, both as a counselor and a professor, stirred and strengthened dormant leadership capabilities within our class. His unusual talents for things literary were unmistakeably revealed in the guiding of the production of the i958 Oak and superior publications of our growing college. ln l957, Mr. Clarence Miller was chosen to share in the advisership of our class. He, too, has been a great asset in influencing our futures. His high ideals and personal character set an excellent example for all of us. His out- standing musical abilities have been evidenced in his direction of our Senior Class production and in the advancements in the college music program. 'Wy DR. DOROTHY MIERZWA MISS MARY COLVEY i l E i Mr. Clarence Miller, Mr. George Reinfeld. Decisions were made, summer ended, and col- lege began. We embarked upon a four-year iourney, striving for independence but lacking security. Our future was dependent upon careful guidance. Instrumental in the rudimentary stages of our college life was Dprothy Mierzwa. With her help, we formulated a class unity built on high standards. Another person who played an integral part in our development was Miss Mary Colvey. Her many philosophies are rooted deep within us. She en- couraged and fostered the expansion of our abili- ties. The Class of 1958 is indeed grateful to those two friends As a class, we are gratefully indebted to these two outstanding faculty members. Through their friendship and guidance, we have grown immea- surably not only as a class but as mature individuals. The informality of casual clothes, nusual decorations, and copious refreshments ll contributed to make this evening an enioy- ble one. September found the Class of '60 climbing the second step on the ladder of success. The freshmen were wearing dinks and holding doors open for everyone on campus. They serenaded us with the Alma Mater early each morning and worked frantically to get the names of upperclassmen on their dog tags. All this was the result of the sophomore-sponsored orientation program. Cooperating with the seniors in many other on-campus activities, the sopho- mores carried on part of the tradition of honoring the seniors at the annual Christmas Banquet. Class Week started off with a literal bang as the Class of 1960 presented an adult western. This was succeeded by the customary class banquet and dance. Sophomores and seniors once more teamed together to complete the year's social calendar with the Senior-Sophomore Prom, held in Atlantic City. The class aspires to fulfill their motto, Plan our work, work our plan. 67 FIRST ROW: R. Mottola, K. Goodwin, G. Borelli, F. Rotz, R. Polhemus, P. Michaud, B. Furdyna, C. Muschal, P. Bignchi, D. A brown and gold dink? Yes, we are freshmen! The setting for our part in GSTC's drama had been set, years before, by preceding classes, yet we were a bit hesitant about stepping into the spotlight. Our successful encounter with the sophomores in the tra- ditional tug-ot-war in September gave us the confidence we so sorely needed, as we threw away our dinks and officially ended the hazing period. Now, into the swing of things, our freshman boys chal- lenged the sophomores to a basketball game. Although the final score found the sophs ahead, we refused to be daunted. In October, for the first time in the history of the college, a straight party ticket won in the frosh elections. The FAP's CFreshmen Advancement Partyj were introduced at an in- formal dance at Halloween. Our star in this scene was John McNally, co-starring was Joe Magosin, with Elaine Pulasty to record our mistakes, and Mark Blasko to bank our funds. rw! FRESHMAN K . gf .ESV Runyon, J. Rocco, S. Ferguson, 5 Hassor, N. Erdman, D. Garcia, M. Klinshaw, B. Benson, P. Gorman, P. Turtul Several informal dances were sponsored by the Fresh- man class in the weeks that followed. Act II opened to the sound of music and the rustle of ' autumn leaves. Our Freshman-Junior Prom, Autumn Noc- ' turne, ushered in a colorful fall season. The scene changed to a solemn, thoughtful mood of i prayer at the annual Freshman-Junior Thanksgiving Banquet. As the curtain rose on Act III, after we had voted for t ring standardization along with the upper classes, and en- joyed a successful Freshman-Junior Christmas Banquet, the scene was once more set for further activities. Our final act was staged the week cf May 5. Amid the hustle and bustle of Freshman Class Week, we presented the traditional class assembly. Our banquet and dance marked l the climax ofa memorable year at Glassboro. ' We are the beginners, but we shall make you proud, l GSTC, of the Class of '6i. i i l i CLASS Q .9 s lbw xr. 1 Rf' L,LL C. This is an apt descrip- tion of our victorious 1957-58 Glassboro State Basketball team. The Profs are now the Champions of the New Jersey State Teachers College Athletic Conference, 1957-58. One highlight of the season was the defeat of Cheyney STC for the first time in 5 years. When the Profs invaded the Cheyney campus, they lost to their taller competitors by 1 point. At Glassboro, however, it was a much different story when the Profs came out on the top end of a 75-57 score. Another bright spot of the season-Bob Belle scored his 1000th point and also his 1000th rebound in the same night against Tren- ton State. Bob is the first player in the history of Glassboro to ever score 1209 rebounds and 1262 points over a period of 4 years. The mighty mite, Ed Markman, was a real credit to the team. Ed has been a star performer for 4 years and will be a great loss. Ed is a small man, but he can dribble and shoot with the best of the other players of the NJSTCAC. The last triumph of the 1957-58 season was breaking the high scoring record of 119 points, which was set in the 1956-57 season. This year against Phila. Pharmacy, in the last game of the season, the Profs set a new record of 129 points. From October to March you'll see this big man standing on the sidelines of our court, usually yelling, Keep your arms up. Basketball coach Richard Wackar comes to State trom New Bruns- wick High School. His coaching knowledge was gained from Rutgers University. Mr. Wackar participated in football, basketball, and track while attending Rutgers, One great accomplishment during college was his participation in the North-South Shrine football game. 74 SCHEDULE 1957-1958 GSTC Opps. 82 ,.....,, Eastern Baptist College ,.A,..., 60 84 .7,.7,..,.,,,,,. If you had wandered to the front circle this fall, you would have seen Coach Richard Wacker training the first cross-country team in Glassboro's history. The squad had only two meets, both against Cheyney and although they were not victorious, the squad gained a great deal of experience. At the Cheyney campus, the course was a distance of 5 miles over rugged hilly land. At Glassboro the level course covered a dis- tance of 4.2 miles. Jim Hawkins, the only senior, was first across the tape for GSTC in each meet. He placed fourth at GSTC and fifth at Cheyney. For next year, Coach Wacker has scheduled meets with Cheyney, Lincoln University, and Montclair STC. 3 1 at r, -or Couch McKenzie FIRST ROW: T. Klepac, L. Mazzola, M. Haviland, D. Fleischer. Three of the reasons for this optimistic outlook are: Pete Hitchner, Lee Florek, and Joe Brozozowski. Hitchner, the mainstay of the team, has many records to his credit. Among these are: Highest batting average C.50OJ, Highest number of hits C26J, Highest fielding and pitching average Cl.OOOl, and Greatest number of strike- outs in a single season USU. Pete's pitching record for Coach Porch explaining next year's sports program. 3 years stands at 13 wins and l loss. Lee Florek, second in line, is also a big man with the bat. He has good control and Coach Porch expects a lot from him this year. Joe Brozozowski, a mighty big man on the mound with his fast ball and curve, will be used for relief only. Other stalwarts are: Will Hull, Bill Horton, and Joel McKenzie. Coach Porch hopes to draw additional strength from the large group of promising freshman candidates. ln an office iust off the gymnasium is a desk belonging to the Director of Athletics, Mr. Samuel F. Porch, Jr. As you enter the office you may find him busily engaged in telephone con- versations or compiling statistics, always with the intention of improving GSTC's inter-collegiate sports program. The office which he now uses is not unfamiliar territory to him because he attended Glassboro State Teachers College and received his B.S. Degree in 1943. He then went on to ob- tain his Masters Degree in Physical Education at Springfield College. Not one to stand still, Mr. Porch is now working toward his Doctorate at Temple University. For two years he has coached the soccer team, putting to use knowledge and ability gained while playing wing on a Springfield College club team, and goalie for a semi-pro team. Mr. Porch has been a member of the faculty at Glassboro for twelve years, during which time he has coached basketball for six years and baseball for two years. JOHN MELCHIOR President A representative council of all classes, sections, activities and campus organizations, the Student Government meets regularly to discuss and regulate student affairs in the college. President John Melchior presides at the meetings. Allocations to classes, organizations and special activities are considered and controlled by this governing group. In order to be eligible for financial backing from E.C.A. funds, a campus group must have an approved constitution, must submit a copy of minutes for council's inspection, and must present an itemized budget for the forthcoming year. Thislgroup constantly strives for growth in your college, cooperating countless social affairs directly sponsored by other campus groups. Some of Student Government's special proiects are the annual All College Weekend each spring, assembly programs, and presenta- tion of Student Government Keys to each member. In cooperation with administration and faculty, the Student Government serves as the voice 'of the student body. The open meetings encourage students to express their thoughts and suggestions, either directly or through an elected representative. Through the efforts of council, much has been accomplished in establishing better college communication, interest in college activities and, more tangibly, improvement of our campus.
