state mrssns cci uskary PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE GLASSBORO ■- - NEW JERSEY A man is never so tall as when he stoops to help a child. Sweden born Mr. Roland Esbjornson — known and admired as Mr. Esby — estab- lished the Orthopedic Clinic for Handicap- ped children in 1944. Under his untiring guidance the clinic has since flourished. The time and energy, disappointments and elations which were uppermost in our feelings as we endeavored to produce a big- ger and better yearbook — so important at the time — are in reality so insignificant as compared to the work here honored. Tom Walkins, left, guides a play therapy activity. If the child is relaxed and happy, coordination and muscle tone are present. We Dedicate Weigh your efforts against the time and energy, disappointments and elations ex- perienced hy those great people who give unstintingly of themselves for others. Our yearbook is a means to kindling the flame of our memories in the years to come. Mr. Esby ' s clinic is the means to kindle and keep bright the flame of hope as parents see their handicapped children develop into more phy- sically normal individuals with the training and care offered generously by our Mr. Esby .... to him we dedicate this yearbook. Mr. Esby ' s interest is in each case. Here he helps a child learn to walk with the skis. This personal relationship makes Esby beloved. Jim Lilley and Grace Boston assist. This activity strengthens muscles, and the child is proud when he can sit and peddle alone. Miss Adams, Cohen, Calupo, Lilley, Watkins, DiGiam- berardino, D ' Allessandro, Pontrantolne, and Hughes assist the class. CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION SENIOR CLASS UNDERCLASSMEN ATHLETICS ACTIVITIES From the station the ma- jestic appearance of the Administration Building is accented by the white capped trees. This peacefulness gives no hint of the activity within. The splendor of the circle on the front campus when covered with a blanket of snow is surpassed only by the spring blossoms of the trees which border the drive- way. The warmth and homelike atmosphere and generally fine appearance of the dormi- tories add much toward making the woman ' s life at college a pleasant one. Oak and Laurel, of you we have fond memories. Here we see the temporary housing for the men, known as the shacks. From oilstove tender to proctor, the men enjoy dorm life. One of the most inspiring sights of the campus is the tower. At night its light is visible for miles. Fine carillonic bells have been installed. Far back on the campus is found the U-shaped Annex, which houses college and Demonstration classes. Remember those rainy day trips there? I T i f mis aim n m u The vast expanse of the Ath- letic held gives ample room for all sports events, as well as an archery range, fireplace and picnic space. This doorway is the favorite spot for spring fever victims or men for those between class smokes. It is probably the most used entrance. Each dormitory unit has its own living room. Here by the fireplace or piano can be found girls enjoying their home away from home. y e ' ov, ' a. Representing the administration we have pictured the president of the Faculty Associa- tion, Mr. Samuel Porch, and Harvey Hawn, president of the Student Government Associa- tion. It is good to know that here at college our faculty and students work cooperatively on many matters. In Dr. Bunce we recognize the quali- ties of leadership that are necessary to make a successful administrator. He is a man of honesty, integrity and outstanding ability. He has proved to be a friend as well as a leader to us, and to the faculty. Meeting with the Student Council, supervising student teachers, making schedules and supervising assemblies are only a few of his duties. Besides his many responsibilities as President of the college, Dr. Bunce finds time for lecturing in the state. He is an active member of the Rotary Club. The Class of 1951 is proud to have had the opportunity of knowing and work- ing with Dr. Bunce. TO THE STUDENTS AND STAFF: Again it is my pleasure to extend greetings to all of you. A yearbook such as this, really is a symbol of our College because it is the result of co- operative planning with an ideal in mind, of good leadership and of intensive, consci- entious work on the part of many people. This has been a good college year at Glass- boro. We have had a well balanced group of fine students, most of whom will make good teachers. Our athletic teams have done well and our social affairs have been well organ- ized and pleasurable to attend. Last, but by no means least, the academic attainment of students has been good. As President, I appreciate your fine co- operation and trust. Sincerely yours, EDGAR F. BUNCE As Dean of Instruction, Mr. Winans is one of the busiest persons of the college faculty, where he has served since the school opened in 1923. His duties include supervising student teachers, and college instruction, and placing students and graduates in teaching positions. He is also eager and willing to lend a helping hand whenever his services are sought. Mr. Winans ' classes will always re- member him for his quick wit and keen sense of humor. His pleasant manner and sincere interests in train- ing good teachers have made it a pleasure to have worked with him. Among his interests are writing poetry, stamp collecting and gardens. TO THE CLASS OF 1951: Within a few weeks, the Class of 1951 will have heen graduated, and the campus, dorm- itories and well loved places that have known its laughter, serious discussion and tears, will know it only seldom again. College is good for youth. It builds charac- ter, makes life-long friendships and bridges the gap between childhood and adult life. Perhaps the ideas engendered during these four years will guide during the rest of life. If these ideas have been good, then straight- thinking, positive young people will go into schools to guide the destinies of the nation. We have liked the Class of 1951, and send them out confidently. Yet there will always remain in our hearts a kindly spot for them and with each will go our God-speed . May they acquit themselves well and prove the values that come from association with learn- ing. SEYMOUR G. WINANS Miss Evelyn Reade, Dean of Women is pictured here conferring with the Men ' s Dean, Mr. Samuel Witchell. Counselling students is an important part of their responsibility. Miss Reade enjoys planning sports and social activities. Mr. Witchell, expert in the field of human relations, is keenly aware of cur- rent world affairs and spends much time in speech making and community affairs. F A C U L T Y Mildred Adams, Ed.M. The men ' s football, basketball, baseball and minor teams hare regular schedules with other colleges. Outstanding this year was our exciting basketball game with Temple University. George Kinkier, quarterback Tony Galupo, halfback Bill Apsley, center Salvatore Tronco, guard Dominic DiGiamberardino, tackle Clarence Monk, tackle Fred Laspe, halfback Rodney Hughes, halfback John Grant, halfback Mike D ' Allesandro, guard Andy O ' Neil, tackle Harry Lubin, end First Row: Larson, Mullin, Morris, DiGiambecardino, D ' Alessandro, Apsley, Tronco, O ' Neil, Subotich, Todaro, Cowell. Second Row: Merrill, Lubin, Lechese, Monk, Calupo, Kushner, Rix, Wollman, Pierce, Kovack, Kinkier, White, Cashner. Third Row: Dougherty, Doyle, Caso, Esholtz, Kazan, Laspe, Cor- bett, Chiarlante, Fague, Corella, Bailey, Wadloski, Beaudett. Our grid stalwarts added to the fighting spirit and determination of past teams, a powerful, crowd-pleasing offense that sur- pased all our college records ... As a tip-off for things to come, Nate Todaro grabbed the first kick-off of the season and convoyed by devasting downfield blocking galloped 100 yards for the score . . . The Panzer game was a rock and sock ' em affair between two great lines . . . Wilson College couldn ' t muster their offensive might against our aggressive line play and alert pass interceptions, two boom- eranged into T. D. ' s . . . Heartbreaking en- counter of the year was the trek to Montclair. Coach Dallalio suffered agonies as our boys gained 320 yards, made 17 first downs, lost by one point . . . Sporting a long list of in- juries, the Profs met the Aggies, and in a wild and woolly get-to downed the Aggies while setting a scoring record . . . Getting into high gear the Profs smashed the record the following Saturday against Cheyney; a neat 46-6 job. Twelve seniors on the team were playing for the last time and went all out for victory. With regret we note that this is the last season of football at Glassboro until some time in the future, because of the present na- tional emergency reducing the male enroll- ment. The Class of 1951 is proud to have seen a victorious season, and hopes it will not be long until football returns. SCHEDULE Class. The squad enjoyed limited success last season. Rain cancelled several matches, and only three were played. Glasshoro defeated hoth Philadelphia Pharmacy and Penn Op- tometry, but lost to Trenton. Court veterans returning this year will he Frank Bortle, John White, Fred Laspe and the Brandt brothers. Many new teams are being contacted for games, including Ursinus and Rutger ' s College of South Jersey. In a highly spirited dual track meet, a combined Junior and Freshman class team downed a Senior and Sophomore team for the Third Annual Intramural Track Cham- pionship. The individual stars for the victors were Dominic Di Ciamberardino, Fred Wollman and Sal Tronco. The losing cause was aided by Donald Fague who captured three firsts. Vasii-Uy Basketball We take off our hats to a team that has fought its way through one of Glasshoro ' s finest seasons, giving this school the hest record that it has yet attained. To give credit to any one individual would he diffi- cult, for Glasshoro functioned as a team, from the first game until the last. We say farewell to three men who have heen starters for four consecutive years. These are Ralph Brandt, Dom DiGiamberdino and Connie Rahme. Things to remember: Hype Larsen ' s thirty- eight points against Kings for a new school record ... a team total of 1503 points, also a new record . . . losing one varsity member after another and still being so successful . . . going way out of our class and giving Temple a run for its money . . . even had them worried for a while, although their All American, Bill Bilkvy played against us . . . The Awards Club is composed of girls who have earned their first award in the Women ' s Athletic Association Intramural and Varsity sports program. The club is much larger than pictured above. Presi- dent is Eileen Morrison. The club plans an outing each year and a reception for new members. Junior Varsity Cheerleaders are (left to right) Claire Rockafeller, Barbara Dab- bler, Gloria Adams and Mar- lene Marsicano. The varsity and J.V. cheerleaders perform at football and basketball games throughout the season. Each year they sponsor an in- formal dance, known as the Sno-Ball. The varsity wear orange and brown, and the J.V. ' s wear white and brown. Joan Witte, top, has been a varsity cheer- leader for four years, and captain of the squad for a year. Ann Mauiri, captain one year, has been a varsity cheerleader for four years. Shirley Schwartz has cheered for three years. GlaU Senior girls have left a lasting impression in the girls intramural and varsity program. In four years of play they have won eleven class championships in speedball, hockey, volleyball, basketball and softball. The Seniors have held the volleyball championship for four years, and basketball, three years. They did not defend the basketball title in 1951. Twenty of the girls are members of the Awards Club, of these, five are holders of the fourth award. 78 For four years the Class of ' 51 has dominated all three intramural sports. In football, they captured two championships in their Freshman and Senior years; the latter with a comhined Freshman team. Their most outstanding conquest was basketball. This title they captured two times in four years, from their Sophomore year. In track, the Seniors were victors in their Fresh- man and Sophomore years. The first year they captured every event. With the Freshmen, last year, they gained the team title against the Sophomore and Junior ' s. In intramural and varsity sports both men and women of the Class of ' 51 have made a name for themselves at G.S.T.C. 79 I Baseball Coach Esby is ably assisted by managers Dom DiGiamberardino, Charlie Risberg and Glenn Baker. Seniors this year will be Grant, Lilley, Morrison, Apsley, and Odorisio. They can look for a good season. STATE ' S BASEBALL SCHEDULE Apr. 18 Wesley Jr. College Home May 5 Phila. All of these are coordinated within the Student Council, which is composed of representatives from each eluh or committee. Pictured here is the executive hoard of the Student Council, with Harvev Hawn, President. Student Gov mmetd AiAociatian With president and vice-president elected at large, the Student Council is composed of section and class presidents and one delegate from each E.C.A. group. Officers this year are: Hawn, president; Moore, vice-president; Dorflinger and Entenman, secretaries; Liv- ingston, treasurer. Both of the women ' s and men ' s dormitories are democratically run by Student Councils, elected by the dorm students. These groups not only discipline, but plan social and ath- letic affairs. Most traditional is their com- bined Christmas Open House. Social Alfasu Committee. The President ' s Reception, Thanksgiving Dance, Friday evening movies, and many other enjoyable school events are planned by the Social Affairs Committee. Under the guidance of Mr. Carey, the group gives us opportunity to enjoy our college life in a social atmosphere. With the leadership of Miss Tohill and stu- dent chairman Bing Bailey, the Assembly Committee plans and schedules weekly as- semblies and evening Artist Series programs for the college. The committee presents pro- grams with quality, variety, entertainment, and interest for the student body. QammMee Student Jleattk and Welfare. Committee The Student Health and Welfare Commit- tee under the direction of Dr. Campbell has the important duty of improving conditions in and around the school for the benefit of the entire student body. This committee is composed of a delegate from each homeroom section. Through the hard work of Mr. Creamer and the Publicity Committee, Glassboro State Teachers College is a name often seen in the newspapers. This committee provides sports coverage at each game, and social and schol- astic reports to home town papers. Public RelatiosU Committee Gammitiee jbec iatlcut Committee It is the purpose of the Hospitality Com- mittee to welcome guests and visitors to our college, and show them around the campus. Faculty advisors are Dr. Wilson and Miss Grace Ba -;. The Decoration Committee under Miss Vandermark has many activities throughout the year. Included are the decoration for the President ' s Reception, home room super- vision at Christmas time and Graduation. Qtehe tfra and QUe Glob i The orchestra, conducted by Mr. Pfleeger, serves the college at assemblies, the Spring Concert with the Alumni Association, and at Bacculaureate and Commencement services. The twenty-seven members are given an op- portunity to enlarge their experience in orchestral playing and sometimes get a chance to conduct. Glee Club members are students who en- joy singing, and who wish to improve their skills, and further their acquaintance with fine music of the classic, romantic, and mod- ern periods. Under the capable direction of Mrs. Boyd two excellent concerts are pre- sented each year. The Christmas Concert is always well accepted. The Annual Spring Concert is presented in connection with Alumni. This year there are over one-hun- dred members with Ralph Brandt as presi- dent. A highlight at rehearsals is the offering of a solo by a member of the club. fyutu ie eacliesU America The main purposes of the J.J. Savitz Chap- ter of the Future Teachers of America are to help people, in college, who have selected teaching as a profession, to become better teachers, and to organize high school F.T.A. clubs. Programs are being planned to further these purposes under the direction of Mr. Leonard Mancuso. The Dramatic Club activities are of inter- est to the students. This year the Christmas presentation was the ambitious undertaking of Thornton Wilder ' s The Long Christmas Dinner. Theatre parties are a favorite ac- tivity of the group, which is directed by Miss Tohill. Ceramics Club offers students opportunity to use their creative ability in the making of novelties and jewelry. These items make lovely gifts. Under Miss Vandermark ' s care- ful guidance are thirty members who use molds or design their own pieces. This club always has a waiting list. The Jazz Club is an organization of people who are especially interested in modern music. Advisor is Dr. Robert Powell of Pit- man. The club sponsors various assemblies and dances throughout the year. This year the club has bought a record collection for the school, of modern music. 89 pltoio yi ipiuf Glub The Photography Club is composed of a group of students who, under the supervision of Miss Garretson, enjoy working with pho- tographic materials. Activities of the club are the making and selling of Christmas cards and portraits, taking pictures during assem- blies, and photo-developing for the students. This year ' s president is Pete Raab, and there are over twenty members in this active club. fyoutdk Awand WUuteM Fourth Award winners in the Senior class are Nancy Weldon, Henna Scheeper, Oily Melnik and Nat Pontrantolfi. Staff members are continually working to improve the paper, and are always willing to accept criticism. Joanne Mangino is the capahle editor. Faculty advisor is Mr. Parker. The Association for Childhood Education International endeavors to further the co- operation of all childhood agencies to pro- mote better relationships between home and school, and to raise the standards of profes- sional training for teachers and leaders in the field. Faculty advisor is Miss Ora Lee Everts. Patricia Flowers, president; Sarah Emerson, vice-president; Janet Hand, secretary; Dor- othy Winch, treasurer. «7 4e Oak Editors Grace Boston and Mary Jane Hayes have spent much time in plan- ning, supervising and working on the entire book. Getting things ready was no easy task, and with other work their job was long and tiresome. Literary Editor Thelma Oldford, and Photography Editor George Kinkier also had a great amount of responsi- bility. Senior write-ups were super- vised by Tuffy, and all of the pho- tography was guided by George. Business Managers, Nancy Weldon and Tom Watkins visited many busi- ness establishments in the line of duty. Paying bills and collecting money were their favorite jobs. Effi- ciency was needed, and they had it. Seated: Tiggie Gotzis, Joan Lee, Alma Glueh, Tuffy Oldford, Tony Galupo, Oily Melnik, Tom Watkins, Nat Pontrantolfie. Standing: Fred Laspe, George Kinkier, Joanne Mangino, Ann O ' Donnell, Jeanne Chandler, Jean Jobes, Eleanor Bernson, Lois Kull- mann, Tronco. Although editors may burn the midnight oil, the work of the staff is unexpressably valuable. Writing, collecting, and typing are all staff jobs. Among those who worked especially hard were our typists, Lois Kullman and her assist- ant, Oily Melnik; Nat Pontrantolfi, who worked on the ads, and Ann Maiuri and Jeannie Jobes, and Eleanor Bernson. Also diligent were the following: Joan Lee, Anti- gione Gotzis, Alma Gluch, June McKissock and Clarence Monk. The editors wish to thank Dr. Bunce, Miss Garretson and Mr. Bunce, and class president, Rodney Hughes for their cooperation. Our objective was to incorporate new fea- tures. We hope the underclassmen will con- tinue to improve the yearbook. Top Picture: art committee, O ' Donnell, Chandler, Bernson, Jobes. Missing: Maiuri. Bottom, Stand- ing: Laspe, Watkins.
