PRESENTED BY 4 1950 add NEW JERSEY STATE TEAEHERS COLLEGE GLASSBORO NEW JERSEY jWemortam Norman W. Campbell The world has lost a fine mind; The college has lost an excellent teacher; The students have lost a good friend. ITH tender affectionate memory we recall the valued leadership of Norman W. Campbell. As counsellor he unstintingly devoted time and energy to the enrichment and guidance of our class activities. As teacher, his labors among us contributed a fund of knowledge, the worth of which can be revealed only by our future experiences. As friend, the influence of his amiable personality extended to, and wel- comed, all those who were privileged to come in contact with him. While there remain of us those who were accorded the benefit of his fellowship, his memory will be kept alive and cherished. CONTENTS We have been friends together in sun- shine and in shade. — Caroline Norton 1 1 f HI TO THE SENIOR CLASS: As you leave the College to take your places among the teachers of New Jersey, you will soon become busily engaged with the details of your daily work. You will make new friends and will have new suc- cesses and new pleasures. Your experiences at G. S. T. C. will gradually be pushed back in your consciousness, in order that the new exepriences and responsibilities may be given prominence. This Yearbook will, however, recall to you, from time to time, your life here at your Alma Mater and will serve as a connecting link between the present and the past. I believe, as you look back upon your college days here, that your memories will, in general, be pleasant ones. Some of you have been outstanding in various college activities. Some of you have sacrificed much in order to get your education quickly. All of you have been cooperative and loyal. It is the earnest wish of your College President that you may enjoy your cho- sen profession and that you may achieve success. Sincerely yours, Edgar F. Bunce, President The association with Dr. Bunce has been one of the high points in our college career. The sincereness with which he han- dled our problems will always be remem- bered. His wise counsel has been invaluable throughout our years of training, and we are grateful for his ev er present invitation to come in and talk things over . His vast experiences have contributed greatly in formulating our philosophies of education. It is through his influence that we have gained confidence and feel pre- pared to take our place in society R Ik Mr. Winans has been a faculty member of the Glassboro State Teachers ' College since its opening, September, 1923. He is a moving force in the field of teacher education. The class of 1950 is proud to be under his guid- ance in a very vital profession. As Dean of Instruction he serves us in the capa- city of placement officer, supervisor of student teachers and college instructors, and president in the absence of Dr. Bunce. He pursues three hobbies; gardening, stamp col- lecting and writing verse. SEYMOUR G. WINANS Dean of Instruction Professor of Education Miss Reade became a member of the college faculty in September, 1946. This was the same year that the class of 1950 began its matriculation. As Dean of Women she acts as advisor for scho- lastic and personal problems. On her agenda we find her planning and promoting social affairs. As we enter the teaching field we will often be reminded of her challenging quotation; A winner never quits and a quitter never wins . Her hobbies lie in the fields of music, drama and sports. SAMUEL E. WITCHELL Dean of Men Asst. Professor of Sociai Studies EVELYN M. READE Dean of Women Assf. Professor of Health and Physical Education Mr. Witchell is an advisory channel of authority in the college. In this capacity he has the following list of duties: acts as a laisson between faculty and students, interpreting each to the other; counselor in all problems of men academic and personal; and gives vocational guidance. He has been an expert in the field of human relations both inside and outside of the college. Many of us have been personally aware of this. His chief interests are community work, bridge, and puttering around the house. JOHN I PARKER, ns ruc or Education B.S. DOROTHY STEWART, M.A. Instructor Demonstration School ELIZABETH G. M omen A rmito (Council Ryan, Schwartz, McPherson, Hayes, Hawkins, Woods, Mirenda, Sevastakis, Purcell. The Modern Jazz Music Club was formed last year. It meets weekly to listen to records typical of all schools of jazz. Records are play- ed, discussed, and evaluated. Jazz origin and evolution has been studied. This club holds jazz concerts on campus, takes trips to jazz concerts at the Academy of Music, and sponsors an annual college jazz assembly. C iaAdicai dub Something new has been added this year. With the help of Grace Boston and the advice of Mr. W. Pfleeger, the Classical Music Club is now a going concern. An appreciation of music cannot be acquired by the reading of books. Twenty-five members meet every Fri- day afternoon, seventh period, discuss great composers and listen to their works. Successful music appreciation has, and will continue to crown their efforts. Under the competent direction of Dr. Nellie M. Campbell, and with the valuable advice of Mr. Samuel F. With this in view the committee was organized. In their monthly meetings, items of interest to the college are written. Various achievements of students are sent to the hometown newspaper. Under the guidance of Miss D. Mc El- wain, the committee is one of the most active in the school. May they continue their fine work in years to come. f uLilc eiationd (Committee Dance, Rexon, Shaw, Hampton, Fogletto, Miss McElwain, Bessey, Craig, German. Wendy Sooy, Editor; Ed Wolfe, Class President; Rose Marie Ricci, Assistant Editor. Faculty and Classmates, from a maze of ideas. We, the ' 50 Oak Staff, were deter- mined to create for you the best Oak yet. Gayly and unsuspectingly we undertook this enormous task. Soon our pleasantry changed to des- pair. Picture schedules and copy dates had to be met. Typing assignments, proofread- ing, and many other sacrificing activities had to be done. After plenty of hard work, we finally saw order come from chaos. We relaxed — feeling a job well accomplished. Now we know that without the coop- eration of several faculty members and many students, we could not have reached our objective. Then again, only you can judge whether or not we did achieve our goal. TYPISTS: S anding-Phyllis Adams. Lena PHOTOGRAPHERS: Oran Walker. Jay Minnite, Winnie Carryl. Seated— Carolyn Vanaman.
