WE APPHDACH Olie 194 8 THE DDDflS THAT DPEIV D HIS VOLUME is presented for those who want a pernnanent record of their ® representative events that will be long remembered and associated with the class of forty-eight. The friends we made, the meaningful experiences we had in work and play can now be shared by all in this record. meg A NEW WORLD FDR US f7 HE ANNAL has been di- vided into five sections. Since this ublication Js not entirely for the enior CT one, it ? d that the individual student may find something of Interest to himself or herself. Some will not find the con- tents broad enough, but existing conditions are different from those present when plans were drawn. THEY HAVE G I V E IVf US EHIND THE scenes of a smoothly functioning organization are the skilled per- sonnel who make this possible. So It is at Glassboro. In Dr. Edgar F. Bunce are found the qualities of leadership necessary to make a successful administrator. As President of Glassboro, he has not only been a leader to us but a willing friend. Seymour G. Winans, Dean of Instruc- tion, is another cog in the essential machin- ery at Glassboro. His untiring efforts in helping to place the students in both prac- tice work and their final reward, a perma- nent position, will long be appreciated by all. To the rest of the faculty we extend our heartiest gratitude for all the many knowledges and techniques they have passed on to us. We are now better equipped to take our place in the teaching profession. THE MEAIVS TD L E A R IV EDGAR F. BUNCE President ROLAND A. ESBJORNSON Professor of Health Education HAROLD F. They have grown from the extremely small war-time size to the post-war proportions as seen all over the country today. The coming of the veterans has re- juvenated the school. Teachers College classes that were once composed solely of women are now interspersed with men. The dis cussions are enlivened by the varied and extensive backgrounds of these new- comers. Not to be omitted are the newly formed Junior College classes composed of veterans exclusively. With these men has come the Annex which the Vets so lovingly call, Operation Education. ! We have the privilege of saying, We knew her when. In 1944 the war was at Its peak and the campus resembled a sleeping beauty. Tear, mingled with laughter, flowed when we heard the news of surrender. We had great hopes for our college. In 1945 the conquering heroes re- turned from the great war. The halls of Glassboro again re-echoed with memories of former gaiety, enjoyed now by our newly formed friendships. Nineteen hundred and forty-six saw the birth of the Veterans Junior College, a hope to all of us for a permanent addition to our school. With this came the revival of past activities that reminded some of pre-war Glassboro. We eagerly awaited the first performance of our men ' s basket- ball team. After a successful season they then plunged whole-heartedly into an equally successful baseball season. We were then well satisfied, but hot so those far-seeing football enthusiasts. Glassboro was to have a collegiate foot- ball team. It seemed unbelievable, but now we are making plans for a second season. Our enthusiasm wasn ' t confined only to sports. Dances, teas, parties ' and plays became regular occurences. The orchestra is conducted by Mr. Pfleeger. The student president is Warren Nutt, Class of ' 51. Rehearsals are held twice a week with extra practices when necessary. ORCHESTRA The College Glee Club welcomes students v ho are primarily interested in choral activities. Attractive music of worth from present and past is studied. Students experience increasing pleasure in singing through the intelligent appli- cation of principles of the best individual and choral techniques. These women have been in demand lo sing at churches, women ' s clubs, President ' s reception and other events. WDMEIV ' S GLEE CLUfl The Glee Club is under the direction of Mrs. Florence Boyd. The choral group is proud of some of its members who have done distinct work as soloists. These girls are: Shirley Garwood, Class of ' 49; Phyliss Rann, Class of ' 50; and Janet Morell, Class of ' 49. The college orchestra is composed of about twenty-two members from the student body. The orchestra plays at weekly assemblies and also at special programs such as forum lectures and college dramatic productions. The music is generally of a classical or semi-classical nature. Members have taken individual turns in arranging certain selections. The students have practice in conducting the orchestra. MEN ' S GLEE CLUB This year the men ' s section of the Glee Club makes an appearance. This organization has been absent from school activities for a long time. We hope to hear from them soon. The Dramatic Club offers opportunities to participate in dramatic work as actors or as student directors under the supervision of Miss Elizabeth Tohill. The group is joining a national dramatic organization. It is known for its work in assembly programs and other dramatic per- formances. All students are eligible for tryouts in the annual All-College Play presented in April or May. Students interested in phases of play pro- duction other than acting, work on committees for publicity, business management, staging and lighting. DRAMATIC CLUB The Dramatic Club has a membership of twenty-five. These students from various classes meet twice a week with Miss Tohill. The officers of the club for the year are: Presi- dent, Frank Uiio; Vice-Presi- dent, Amy Sinclair; Secretary, Carolyn Weber; Treasurer, Janet Vellenoweth. The Senior Student Coun- cil representatives are as fol- lows: Senior Class President, Harold Cook; Senior I, Betty Herbst; Senior II, Margaret McCay; Senior III, Virginia Saul. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council consists of class and section presidents who represent their organiza- tions. It is the highest governing student group in the college. Problems are brought before the group from the student body. Decisions are made which the council feels will benefit the students and at the same time maintain a high standard for the school. Meetings are held twice a week at which time council members and faculty advisor, Mr. Samuel Witchell, work cooperatively in formu- lating policies and suggestions for improvements. The Dormitory Student Council was organ- ized in order that there might be a democratic control of government in the dormitories by the students, under the supervision of the Dean of Women, Miss Evelyn Reade. its purpose is to establish and enforce such laws as will improve the welfare of the dormitory students, and provide the greatest opportunities for growth and self control through self-govern- ment. Student Council has established an indiv- idual and unit demerit plan which has been very successful in granting privileges to those who cooperate, but takes away privileges for lack of this cooperation. DDHMITDRY STUDENT COUNCIL The Dormitory Student Coun- cil is under the Supervision of Dean Reade.. President for this year is Shirley Campbell, Class of ' 48. Student Council members are elected by the students in each unit and approved by the Dean. Elections take place in June when one mem- ber is elected for every six girls. The Whit, the college monthly newspaper, is entirely student managed. The staff, including the editor, consists of students from the Fresh- man, Sophomore, Junior and Senior classes. This elective group is composed of those students primarily interested in journalism, and their meetings are held twice a week. The newspaper covers school activities, dorm doings, and views on the current world problems. The Ceramic Club is under the guidance of Miss Parthenia Vandermark, and is composed of students who are particularly interested in the field of creative art. This group meets twice a week at which time they use their own originality and skill in making ceramic products. THE WHIT The Whit is under the guidance of Mr. Franit Cur- cio. Much credit is due the Editor-in-Chief, who is Wil- liam Schneider, Class of ' 50. He is ably assisted by Ted Burdyl, Class of ' 50 and Jo- anne Mangino, Class of ' 51. mm The A. C. E. is under the leadership of Miss Ora Lee Everts. The president of the club, Miriam Edwards, Class of ' 48 deserves n uch credit for the splendid job ske has done. Mennbership in the A. C. E. now totals sixty-five students and faculty interested in any phase of pre-school and ele- mentary education. • C • £ a in: The Glassboro Association for Childhood Education is one of fifty student groups in the United States and the only such branch in New Jersey. It is affiliated with the State and Na- tional Associations for Childhood Education. The association endeavors to further the cooperation of all childhood agencies; to unify the work of the home and school; and to raise the standards of professional training for teach- ers and leaders in these fields. The A.C.E. has sponsored operettas and ballets and this year the Saionne Saynor Theatre will present Treasure Island for the Demonstra- tion School and others who are interested. The Photography group, under the watchful eye of Miss Anna K. Sarretson, has learned a variety of techniques and abilities in the field of photography. Not only the taking and develop- ing of pictures is taught, but the group attempts to master the operation of the different kinds of visual aids used at the college, plus the enlarging, toning and coloring of photographs. All of the e learnings are not only useful at the college but can be used afterwards as a pleasurable or even profitable avocation. PHOTOGRAPHY BASEBALL After a slow start the 1947 team in their first post-war baseball session finished strongly, winning eight of their nine final games. The Teachers had a double win over P. CP. Wesely of Dover, Delaware, was beaten by the score of 22-14. Two other Delaware institutions were defeated; Beacom, 12-5, and Kings, 15-7. Glass- boro split with National Farm, winning 3-2, and losing, 9-4. FDDTB ALL DAVE ROSEN Winner of the most valuable player award for the 1947 season. This year Glassboro, for the first time in its history, ran a football team out on the gridiron. The season must be called successful, even though the number of wins was not equal to the losses. Of course there was no former record to judge by, but the games were hard fought and good from the spectator ' s point of view. Who can tell where this beginning may end! Surely, no one can deny that Glassboro has many possibilities in football. Its mere location should draw both players and spectators if the program were put on an intercollegiate level. Next year we are looking forward to an even more successful season with more games and a little stiffen competition. To the coaching staff, man- agers, and players of this year ' s team we offer our congratulations. BASKETBALL The basketball squad this year is one of the largest in the history of Glassboro. With an accumulation of stars from all over New Jersey, Glassboro State ' s team is turning in a fighting performance. With a fine turnout of Freshmen, State has a team of which it should be proud. w o M E N THE MALE STUDENT BODY Class of ' 48 T)el Lotz Plainfield, New Jersey Tete Schumann Class of ' 49 Pitman, New Jersey eth Smith Class of ' 50 Mt.
