Text from Pages 1 - 106 of the 1940 volume:

PRESENTED BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF THE NEW JERSEY STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE AT GLASSBORO Just as the mighty oak points skyward, staunch in stately majesty, so in this volume do we hope to safeguard the mem- ory of discovered horizons. With the profound desire to keep our memories aglow, we present the Oak of 1940. • CAMPANORAMA • CLASSES • LIFE • ACTIVITIES ' Neath trees of majestic height and grace, We have wiled away happy hours. The highway beyond the lawns with their century-old trees hums with activity while upon this campus away from the noise of the streets live students in a veritable world of their own. One season gives way to another, and so it is with the years, yet the only change in the hearts of those who know these grounds intimately is the thought that the campus grows more and more beautiful. Never to be forgotten are the smooth lawns, brilliantly green under summer ' s heat, crisply white with winter ' s frost. ' Neath the whispering and the rustling oak and linden trees which line the Presidential Walk leading to stately Whitney House, sunshine and shadow have mingled. Brilliant days change into starry nights. Winding paths lead to the turfed natural amphitheatre and to the tennis courts clustered among tall oak trees. Tucked away are many secluded nooks offering solitude and inviting meditation at nightfall — to dream, to speak idle words, to hope. In the spring, bright, well-cared-for gardens of yellow daffodils, laven- der iris, and red tulips enhance the beauty of the campus. Lovely pink laurel blossoms in the spring near the dormitory bearing its name. The beauties of nature manifested at each season of the year cannot be surpassed — the change in the spring from yellow to pink and to the final summer dress of brilliant green, the change in the fall from multi-colored hues to the subsequent white of winter. Throughout the years, foot- steps tread the winding paths, climb the steps of the Colonial buildings. These very footsteps may fall in distant climes, but never will they find greater satisfaction and pleasure than is inspired by our campus. We have started on our journey, May we reach our post afar. Through the storms of life we ' ll ever Hitch our wagon to a star. In the years within these portals, Valiant deeds we ' ll strive to do, And the halls will ring with echoes Of our strife to carry through. Strength and might — for the right Are our guides to nobleness. When in after years we rally Once again within these halls, We, the class of nineteen-forty, Will have marched on to our goal. Words by Richard Corson Music by Eleanor Schroeder . ' in JnM e mo nam Dorothy was with us so short a time; almost but a fleeting moment. She worked with us, laughed with us, sang for us; the moment, brief as it was, was swret and pleasant. Then He called. We did not understand, but nei- ther did we question His judgment. He took her by the hand and led her to a place far more beautiful than ours. We remembered; we will always remember our Dorothy. mm God, disgusted with earth ' s fogs and gloom And feeling sorry for long-faced men, Sent a singing child to make us smile Saying Soon you must return again. The child grew and sang for us. We won ' t forget her song. But earth continued to grow worse and worse And nations vied in doing wrong. God said, Rumors of war have come to my ears And smoke may mar my singer ' s wings. I ' ll take her to my fold again, Where, on high, my angels sing. Ella Moss, ' 40 31 r i DR. GEORGE W. LETTERS TO THE EDITORS Dear Editor: I suppose a person who is neither an educator nor a college student i not in a very good posi- tion to comment on modern college education. And even educators have different ideas on this subject. President Robert M. Hutchins of the University of Chicago has -aid. ' The word college does not mean the same thing to all educators. Since renowned educators disagree as to the benefits that may be derived from a college educa- tion and the methods which should be followed to obtain the best results, it is rather difficult for a layman to form a very positive opinion. He can only judge by the comparisons he is able to make between college graduates and those who are not college graduates. Here again he is very apt to be in the position oi not being able to form a positive opinion. Some time ago one of the lead- ing magazines asked a number of representative employers whether or not they preferred college graduates in their employ. Out of twenty-three answers nine were in the affirmative, five in tin- negative and nine made qualifying answers. Some -aid it made no difference and others said it all depended upon the position or the individual. However, in -pite of tin- yes and no attitude. I think il i- becoming more a in I more important that young people should have a college education. In Government service, for example, the demand lor college graduate-, is increasing. In fact, it i- now necessary that a candidate for many civil service examination- be college graduate- in order lo qualify. The standard for public service i- higher than formerly and the college graduate has a d ' stinct advantage over those whose educa- tion -topped at high school. Histor) i- full of example- of men who have attained great heighi- with little formal educa- tion but their native gifts were beyond the aver- age. The average youth possessing ordinary at- tainment?, needs the stimulating and broadening influence of a college education. In a fiercely competitive age lie need- all the help he can get, and their i- no doubt that hi- opportunities are greater if he i- a college graduate. Glenn Miller Dear Editors: May I add my few words to this splendid sub- ject of modern educational methods in music? Especially in these days when advanced training in America is so widely available lor those who truly seek it I feel that learning has reached a new and epochal phase. It is extremely gratifying fur me to see the earnest efforts of our twentieth-century music in- structors and the enthusiasm with which their methods are received and practised by the young people ambitious for careers in music. The trend toward music in corroboration with the classic studies — fine arts and sciences — is surely a great step toward the realization oi the ideal education lor the musician. Most sincerely, Lauritz Melchior Dear Editor: Thank you very much for your nice letter. 1 appreciate your thinking of me. and I hope the billowing will be satisfactory. After living in the dormitories with the other co-eds for several years, she now stays in a nearby home, arises early each morning to attend college classes. Every basketball and baseball game finds her an ardent rooter. She is also present at each dance held in the college gym, there occasionally favors one of the men students with a brief waltz. Glaring difference between Mrs. Smith and her numerous co-ed friends lies in the type of pictures she carries around to show all interested persons, hers being of one or more grandchildren rather than a best beau. After graduation from the Philadelphia Nor- mal in 1883, Mrs. Smith taught for a year in Franklinville. left the teaching field to keep house and eventually to marry and raise a family. Twenty-three years later, she again re- turned to her profession, teaching the children of South Jersey until her retirement in 1937 at the age of 71. Unwilling to remain idle, she decided to work for her bachelor s degree at G.S.T.C., obtained it in June of that year. Since then she has remained to study various subjects of her own choosing. As America ' s Oldest Co-ed. ' Mrs. Smith has been featured in nearby urban newspapers and on a radio program. So also, to her who has brought some degree of fame to our college, this vearbook would jni r honor. To give an all-inclu- sive pen picture would be futile, but praise we will she who has so justly earned it. Her personality both within and outside the classroom is charming. She always stands ready to help in any situation — class week, class meeting, dance, banquet, picnic, dramatics, indi- vidual problems of a scholastic nature and otherwise. Our initial acquaintance with Miss Tohill during our first year at college began in her speech ln-s. Some members of the class had the op- portunity of becoming more intimately acquainted with her in the illustrious mouse group. The less fortunate gained her recognition, confidence in the ensuing years so crowded with class ac- tivities. In spite of a full teaching schedule. Miss Tohill never refuses to listen to our main appeals, to counsel, to make easier a difficult task. Through- out the lour years she stood l v the class fostering a unified spirit.
