Ackley Dorothy Mackler Wallace Holman Marie Kirby School life is wrought and sculptured by the indi- viduals on the campus and the incidents occurring during the school year. The staff has endeavored to weld pictorially these personalities and these events into a coherent record — The Oak of 1938. 3 b ' m With real admiration, we, the Class of Nineteen Hundred Thirty-nine, dedicate The Oak of 1938 to our presi- dent, our leader, and our friend — EDGAR F. BUNCE. To the Student Body: The college year 1937-1938 has been a memorable one to me and I hope it has to you. You have been very cordial and loyal to your new President and to his family. There have been some changes at the College in regula- tions and standards. Time will tell whether or not they are wise ones. Many ot you have successfully held responsible positions and many of you have overcome handicaps. You personally have gained much by your efforts and the College has also profited. In February, the College was officially approved by the National Asso- ciation of Teachers Colleges as a four-year degree granting teachers college. Now, as the year draws to a close, I believe that we more nearly approximate the ideals for which we are striving than we did in September. The Yearbook Staff members and their adviser are to be heartily com- mended for their earnest and intelligent endeavors to record those events and faces which we wish always to remember as characteristic of the present college year. Yours sincerely CAMPUS FACULTY CLASSES I CI 1 I IS C4NDIDS THE PRESIDENT ' S WALK LAUREL HALL ' ' THUS WINTER FALLS EDGAR F. BUNCE SEYMOUR G. WINANS [15] [16] [17] [181 [19] [20] STUDENT COUNCIL Following the suggestion of our new president, the unwieldy student council of previous years was replaced by a compact council composed of the presidents of all student organizations. In this way, representation was provided for every type of personality and interest in the school. In the council, each representative presents the problems peculiar to his own constituents. As a result of free discussion, suggested methods for the amelioration of these difficulties are formulated. The result is that more amicable relationships have been established between the students, the faculty, and the public. [22] STUDENT- EACULTy COMMITTEES As one outgrowth of the policy that each individual who is a part of the College must be growing educationally at all times, and that growth is possible only if a real challenge or actual responsibility properly supervised is given each person, with the fullest possible utilization of each one ' s in- terests and powers in a cooperative scheme, Student-Faculty committees were organized. These committees, each composed of elected representatives from the various home rooms and three faculty members, met regularly each month to discuss problems related to the work of the committee, to make recom- mendations of policy which were referred to the President, and to carry out approved procedures. The Student Life and Student Welfare Committee studied the adjustments of members of the student body to the school environment, and formulated policies which guided the administrative officers in making campus life more beneficial to all. The Curriculum and Scholarship Committee concerned itself with school policies in regard to curricular adjustments and scholarship standards. Varia- tions in standards among staff members and class groups were studied and recommendations were made to the administrative officers. The Field Relationship Committee established contacts between the Col- lege and teachers in the field, making arrangements with teachers of southern New Jersey for displays of activities and for conferences between the College and the teachers in the area served. The High School Relationship Committee with its fun-making Play Day and interesting speakers sent out by the College to local high schools de- veloped a new recognition of the State Teachers College at Glassboro. The Publicity Committee inaugurated our first real newspaper, The Whit , to replace the defunct Collegian , and also kept the State informed of school activities by articles in thirty newspapers of New Jersey. The performances of Beyond the Horizon, Dulcy, the Irish Concert, and The Ballet Caravan were successful largely because of the efforts of the Public Pay Performances Committee. The Student Assembly Committee has afforded real opportunities for stu- dent participation in chapel programs, and has presented our faculty as in- dividual personalities, not merely as instructors. Well known lecturers were also presented. The Social Training and Hospitality Committee sponsored the memorable reception to our new President. Members of the Committee have acted as hosts and hostesses at all functions, professional and social, at the College. The Dormitory and Property Committee improved the lighting facilities of the College by the installation of flood-lights on the campus grounds, and it has steadily sponsored beautification of the campus. All committees have consistently and conscientiously worked to produce welcomed improvements at the College for both the students and faculty. [23] OUR GUARDIAN SENTINEL ROLAND A. ESBJORNSON For your timely advice, comradeship, humor, friendliness, and especially your humanness as our adviser, we, the Class of Nineteen Hundred Thirty-eight, will always remember you. [26] [28] DR. HAROLD WILSON Your jovial manner, boundless energy, and intelligent guidance have been instrumental in carving for us a niche in the annals of the college. Your name will always remain indelibly inscribed in our memories. [30] [31] [32] [34] [35] [30] [37] [40] [41] 142] [+3] [46] [48] THE SCPHCHCCC [49] ' Second semester Carlton Cloud. BE YOURS TO HOLD IT HIGH Hi) 13 13 ICS Modern education has lately decreed that avocations, as well as voca- tions, should be encouraged in the modern school. To promote the develop- ment of hobbies for our students, the College has steadily fostered the estab- lishment of new clubs. In the beginning, as a Normal School, with a student body almost exclusively feminine, the clubs, naturally, were feminine in plan. With the growth and development of our College, interests and objectives of all clubs have broadened. The clubs have increased in number and in scope. As the masculine enrollment increased, the Men ' s Club was formed. In 1938 a new departure was made in that men were admitted to membership in all clubs. The new Archery Club, established for the devotees of the feathered shaft, has provided its members with opportunity for the acquisition of skill with the bow and arrow. The Outdoor Club has afforded its members chances to have really dif- ferent week ends in the old farm-house at Camp Savitz. On these trips the students forget the cares of school work for happy hours in the outdoors: canoe- ing, hiking, swimming, and lounging before the open fire. The Kindergarten-Primary students in our College have formed a unique organization, one of the few student branches of the Association for Childhood Education. In our kindergarten these girls have gained some understanding of children ' s problems. In Clio, the social science club, the members gained new points of view from clear-cut discussions of current problems, and grew gray trying to keep abreast with the advisers on various extra-mural trips. With the institution of the Travel Club, those students enticed by far- away lands were given chances to plan journeys and to discuss the etiquette of travel. An attempt was made in the Science Club to keep our embryonic scien- tists abreast of current discoveries in all fields of science. Through trips to art centers and participation in activities about the Col- lege, the Art Club developed and stimulated the latent artistic impulses of its members. The Literary Club offers satisfaction and stimulation for our future Gertrude Steins and Sinclair Lewises. The Psychology Club, through trips and the discussion of new develop- ments arising in the science of psychology, has tried to develop a realiza- tion of the quirks of the human mind. For our students who hope not to be old maids, the Home Economics Club offers lessons in the proper treatment of that famed road to a man ' s heart. To satisfy those who desire additional physical activity, the Athletic Club was formed. The Orchestra and Music Clubs afford to those with muscial inclinations and talents the opportunity for expression in musical media. Plays, skits, monologues, and other dramatic presentations allow the mem- bers of the Dramatic Club to indulge in hamming to their hearts ' content. For the candid camera fiends of the school, the Camera Club was or- ganized. Here among their ilk, they talk of diaphragms, shutters, lenses, and such, to their fullest satisfaction. In times past, the town-crier bore the news. Our town crier is The Whit, the College newspaper. These organizations are our means of promoting avocations. [54] ARCHERY CLUB So Jong as (he new moon returns in the heavens a bent beautiful bow. So long will the lascination of archery keep hold of the hearts of men. [55] cat ASSOCIATION FOR CHILDHOOD EDUCATION Now. you know, in every enterprise the beginning is the main thing. CAMERA CLUB As we see you!! [56] TRAVEL CLUB Ot journeying, the benefits are many. SCIENCE CLUB Science is power. [57] ART CLUB A thing ot beauty is a joy toievei. LITERARY CLUB Of all those arts in which the wise excel. Nature ' s chief masterpiece is writing well.
