J The beat up condition of this old car represents the former name of Rowan Tech as seen in this obsolete sign . . . A HISTORY OF ROWAN TECHNICAL COLLEGE In l958. the North Carolina legislature granted funds for the establishment of industrial education centers to be controlled by local superintendents and boards of education. By the early l96O's, Rowan Industrial Education Center had evolved. In I963. Rowan Technical Institute was chartered. Funding of Rowan Technical Institute was provided through North Carolina General Statute lI5A. lt was ranked twentieth for budgeting purposes. Rowan Technical Institute was the twentieth industrial education center to be begun in North Carolina. The first director was C, Merrill Hamilton, a graduate of Ball State University with a Master's degree from Ohio State. In l963, the school had only one building and was located on twenty-five acres of land. By I975, an additional three buildings had been built. These additions doubled the size of the campus. A parking lot and fifty more acres were added. Rowan Technical Institute was the twenty- first institution to be accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. and the second institution to be accredited by the North Carolina accrediting agency. lt was the first to be accredited by both. Rowan Technical Institute is divided into four maior divisions: Ah Occupational Educatiom Bl Continuing Education: Cl Student Personnel: and DJ Business. Currently. there are twenty-four degree, diploma. and certificate programs offered. ln December l979. the North Carolina General Assembly passed a bill which recognized thc synonymous nature of the terms of college and institute . After action by the Rowan Tech Board of Trustees and the Rowan County Commissioners, the North Carolina State Board of Education officially approved the designation of Rowan Tech as Rowan Technical College. Today, Rowan Technical College offers students many extracurricular activities as well as a high degree of technical instruction. With many organizations such as the Student Government Association, Spectrum Staff, Tech Times. Circle K. and Mechanical Society, Rowan Tech exposes each student to a wide range of stimulating, enriching experiences. - information taken from doctoral dissertation of Dr. William Comer, former Dean of Occupational Education. - l l l -mg- while this Lamborghini symbolizes the modern Rowan Technical College M4 Radiology students in rrainmg .VP f-4 !
