We have experienced happiness and we have felt sorrow. We have attained knowledge and understanding. Much has been ac- complished through these experiences. We have stood together. Tomorrow we may stand alone. Although we may never see each other again we have memories bound within the covers of this book, the 1972 Spectrum to bind us together through any time or distance. 13 i DEDICA TIUN This year, Spectrum '72 is dedicated to an individual who portrays the true meaning of Spectrum, This instructor has applied his numerous talents and abilities to all who come in contact with him. He is an individual who has the ability to motivate the student. He demands the best and then, asks for better. He has managed to do what most of his generation has found almost impossible--- he has bridged the generation gap through his understanding and teaching capabilities. We, the annual staff, feel that this faculty member is most adapted to the new look and ideas of Spectrum '72. We hereby dedicate the Spectrum '72 to MR. TIMOTHY J. DAVIES. 14 Timothy I, Davie 15 ,pav- ww- ' r- To Rowan Tech Students: Rowan Tech is a happy combination of students, faculty, equipment, buildings, and books. It is the combining of these elements which produces a product-a product ready to enter into business, industry or the health occupations. You, the student, make the Institute. What you seek - what you learn - how you con- duct yourself in our free democratic society reflects on how successful Rowan Tech was in meeting its goals. The Spectrum Staff is to be congratulated on producing a fine yearbook. . This is a kaleidoscope and becomes a historical document. You who are graduating this year have the Rowan Tech stamp of approval. Wear it well and proudly. Sincerely, 6 5 OA!-4--...e:4-4.9 C. Merril Hamilton President 16 f -f ff' i M r. The reason for the lnstitute's being can be ex- plained in one word---education. This is the first, last, and only reason for the school's existence. Located on interstate 85, just outside of Salisbury, Rowan Tech was founded in 1960. September 3, 1963 marked the entrance of the first full-time students. These students were enrolled in seven pre-employment trade education programs and several short cour- ses. ln 1964, thirteen students were graduated. ln contrast, 148 students graduated last year in 1971. The school keeps growing with the growth of students enrolled. This year, with the completion of Buildings 200 and 300, Rowan Tech has grown in building space, and now has 85, 000 square feet of modern, well-equipped offices, shops, and classrooms. March, 1964, the school was recognized for its successful beginning, along with its potential, and was designated as Rowan Technical Institute. Six years later, in December, 1970, Rowan Tech was accredited by both the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and, the North Carolina Board of Education. Leaders in the fields of business, industry, and education make up the board of Trust- ees for the Institute. The school is supported by public funds from local, state, and Fed- eral sources. Rowan Tech offers organized educational curriculums in vocational trades, business and health careers, engineering technologies, guided Studies preparatory for entrance into the two -year program, and provides learning labs and extension programs. There are ma ny extracurricular activities such as the Student Government Association, several socie- ties and clubs, various committees, basketball, cheerleading, and intramural sports. Rowan Technical Institute has attracted people from all walks of life. Students come from the Salsibury-Rowan area, as well as from far away as Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, and New jersey. The student at Rowan Tech finds himself in an environment where scholarship is en- couraged, and achievement is sought and valued. The time spent at Rowan Tech helps de- termine, to a degree, how the remaining years of productive living will be spent. Rowan Technical Institute is a place where students can probe truth and knowledge, as well as seek a direction for the future. Students can meet challenges and come face-to-face with the moral values. Rowan Tech gives the student an opportunity of physical and mental maturity, and, a chance to become a responsible citizen of his country. 18 1-4 F. f .R fx-W1?fFEiW3g,,, flltf :Af 1 is A155358 ' ,,. -9. 3-v., M fa'V!+u' Rf. Some things about the life of john Raymond Weaver, jr. , are fact: john was born February -1, 19-IS. He attended the public schools in Virginia and graduated from Floyd E. Kellam High School in 1906. After high school he served in the U. S. Navy un- til he was honorably discharged in january 1970. john enrolled in Electronics Technology at Rowan Technical Institute in September 1070. During his first year at Tech he was active in SGA affairs serving on both the Social and Recreation Committees. More re- cently he had become an active member of Cannaan Baptist Church. Some things about glohn's life are but ideas: He was one of us at Rowan Tech. Some of us knew him only slight ly while others knew him well. But one thing I feel he would say to all of us, it matters not what technical skills we acquire, wealth we gather, or degrees we receive nearly as much as our relation- ships with one anotherg therefore, have a positive effect on each other. --Grady S.
