Cleatus A. Miller Receives N cwy Cross Congressman Earl B. Ruth presented the Navy Cross to Marine Private First Class Cleatus A. Miller, jr. on jan- uary 17, 1971. The Navy Cross, which is the second high- est award receivable, was given for extraordinary heroism in combat. On October 25, 1969 PFC Miller, whose right leg was immobile, dragged a machine gun to an advanta- geous firing position and commenced to deliver rapid bursts against hostile emplacements. His heroic and resolute ac- tions inspired all who observed him and provided the time vitally necessary for the first squad to regroup and as- sault through the North Vietnamese Army emplacements.
