Rowan Tech Biograph The history of Rowan Technical Institute is marked by steady growth to serve the people of the mid-Piedmont area of North Carolina. In 1960, Salisbury -- Rowan com- munity leaders, working through the Chamber of Commerce, conducted an area man- power requirements survey. Results of this survey provided the basis for requesting the State Board of Education to establish an industrial education center in Rowan County. Limited operations were begun in 1962, with the first group of students entering an industrial machine operation training program in june of that year. Following comple- tion of the first building designed especially for vocational-technical education, the Institute opened its doors to the first group of full time students on September 3, 1963. Rowan Tech graduated 13 students in july 1964 and in 1969 the number had increased to 117. With the number of students growing, the number of buildings have also grown. Last year the third building was added to our campus. Located in the new building is the new and expanded library, general office, laboratories for Eire and Safety Engineering Technology, Electrical Technology, a Secretarial Science lab, Business Machines lab, and Practical Nursing class rooms and laboratories. During the 1969-70 school year, the various educational programs of Rowan Tech had served over 8, OOO citizens of Rowan and surrounding counties. The Institute now offers twenty organized educational curriculums in vocational trades, business careers, health careers, engineering technology, and guided studies preparatory for entrance into the two -year programs. Rowan Tech is the only institution in North Carolina'accredited by both the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the State Board of Education. Rowan Tech is one of the three institutions fully accredited by the North Carolina State Board of Educa- tion at this time. The State Board action was based on recommendation of a special screening committee's review of Rowan Tech's self-study and the status report filed with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. To quote Mr. C. Merrill Hamilton, Rowan Tech is not just a school, it's people. With the help and encouragement of the faculty and student body, Rowan Tech will al- ways continue to grow and prosper. 7
