'I J 1 A - 2 ,A E from the beg1'nn1'ngU The history of Rowan Technical Institute is marked by steady growth to serve the people of the expanding mid-Piedmont area of North Carolina. Limited operations were begun in 1962, with the first group of students entering a machine operator training program in june of that year. Follow- ing completion of a modern building designed especially for vocational- technical education, the school opened its doors to the first full-time students on September 3, l963. During the first year, seven trade education programs and a variety of shorter courses to up- grade the individual were offered. In recognition of its successful beginning and its potential for broader service, the school was designated as Rowan Technical Institute by the State Board of Education in March of 1964. This development brought with it further opportunities and responsi- bilities for service to the people of the area. Rowan Tech currently offers pro- grams in occupational trades, Prac- tical Nurse Educatiqn, two-year technologies, and basic adult education and provides learning laboratories for extension programs . The Institute is administered by a Board of Trustees composed of twelve educational, business, industrial, and civic leaders. lts support is provided by public funds from local, State, and Federal sources. Rowan Technical Institute is des- tined to play a vital role in making available to the people of the area the resources and energies necessary tO upgrade the technical skills of our ex- panding industrial society. Having ac- complished a great deal in a short time, the future of Rowan Tech lies in the hands of its capable instructors as well as in the hands of its competent student body.
