MONDAY TUESDAY From Minnie Mouse to Dagwood and Blondie, several familiar cartoon characters roamed the hall. It was like a scene from Revenge of the Nerds as people dropped books and stepped on glasses. WEDNESDAY THURSDAY “Hey, mon! Right • Curtain call after Saturday night's performance. Look out! Here comes Audrey II! Live and in living color, we watched on April 22-23 as Seymour, the lowly assistant to Mr. Mushnik, desperately tried to satisfy the voracious appetite of Audrey II. She was the unearthly plant that grew before our eyes on a diet of human flesh. Again and again we all sighed as Seymour tried to win the love of the true Audrey, who worked with him in the florist shop. However, Seymour had competition, because Audrey already had a boyfriend — if you want to call a sado-masochistic, Harley-riding dentist a boyfriend. Along with all this, there were chills, thrills, and giggles (not to mention an adorable group of “60 s Girls”). When it was all finished, it amounted to a great spoof and a great time for the cast and the audience. 39 The true soul of Audrey II. Phillip Wenstrom, Cori Swanson. Shane Simpson, Michelle Strum. This year’s team equaled the undefeated regular season record of 9-0 set by the 1986 team and advanced to the quarter-finals of the IHSA 2A State Tournament. Some of the outstanding accomplishments this year were Jon Nelson’s career total of 3,244 yards rushing and 47 touchdowns, a school record; Jake Libby’s total of 2,143 yards passing and 25 touchdowns; and Jason Landers’s record-setting total of 182 tackles. Only five practice days between the end of the football season and the start of the basketball season combined with the flu bug to give the Fighting Tigers a rather shakey start. Nevertheless, the team won its own Cranberry Classic Tournament and finished second in the Lincoln Trail Conference with an 11-3 record. The Tigers’ overall record was a respectable 15-10, including winning 11 out of their last 13 outings. “We were short in stature but long in heart and desire,” said Coach Bob Meredith. “Our main ingredients were hustle and defense, which allowed us to play an aggressive pressing style.” This season provided valuable experience for the freshman and sophomore basketball squads. “By the end of the year, we were playing respectable basketball,” said Coach Bob Walck. The highlight for the sophomores came in the final home game when Chad Walker sank a basket at the buzzer to lift the team to a victory over Wethersfield. “The freshmen all saw a lot of playing time,” Mr. Walck added. Their season highlight was defeating the Trojans at Toulon by one point. 59 Boys’ Track Front: Preston Morehead. Andy Rednour. Jeff Larson, Jamie Dillbeck. Bob Bewley. The team finished second at the Roseville Relays and the Lincoln Trail Conference meet, and placed third at the Alwood Invitational. They won all their dual and triangular meets, except against Alexis. “Seven seniors will be hard to replace next year,” said Coach Sornberger, “but there is a good nucleus that should return.” School records were set by Jason Landers, who broke his own shot put record with a put of 53 feet, seven inches, and Todd Rogers, who broke the triple jump record with a leap of 43 feet, five inches. Faculty Basketball Game “and I thought I told you to The R.O.W.V.A. Future Farmers of America participated in many activities this year. There were competitions throughout the year at the section, district, and state level in Land-Use, Livestock, Crops, Parliamentary Procedure, Tractor Driving, and Mechanics. The chapter also enjoyed the recreation activities such as picnics, basketball games, Christmas party, and skiing while their community activities ranged from the sale of fruit to the planting of trees. Among the trips that were taken by the F.F.A. were the State F.F.A. Convention in Champaign, Farm Progress Show in Iowa, Leadership Camps, WIU Farm Expo in Macomb and the National F.F.A. Students who represent their schools take written examinations in subjects ranging from drafting and English to chemistry. Later in the year, the Student Council co-sponsored the Thanksgiving food drive with the R.O.W.V.A. Education Association. In addition, they helped Cupid’s arrow find its mark as they gave the annual Sweetheart Swirl. The final activity this year was the highly entertaining Student Council Badminton Tournament which, after many hard-fought battles, was won by Brad Bent. 85 ROWVAN Staff A creative, accurate, descriptive yearbook: that was the goal of the 1988 ROWVAN Staff. The first step toward the goal was taken when editors Ami Tropp and Suzanne Shostrom attended yearbook camp at Rockford in June. They brought the basic concept for this year’s book back to the staffers, who added their own ideas for individual sections and pages. Hectic deadlines, malfunctioning cameras, and misplaced score-books were just some of the obstacles overcome by a dedicated corps of ROWVAN workers. The staffers agree it is a satisfying feeling to begin with a blank paper, fill it with pictures and copy, and then see it printed in a book everyone enjoys. 86 Staff members: (behind tables) Jacque Lindsey. Even though we may have never said “Thanks” enough, we all did appreciate the time and effort you gave to help make band fun for us. You made us work, but we were a great band because of it. Good Luck to you in the future, and we hope your new “kids” work hard for you. This fall Jim Kcneipp was chosen to be one of only two guitarists in Illinois to attend All-State Jazz Band. Jim played in the second band and did a fine job. Congratulations, Jim! 89 ROWVA SHOW CHOIR All right, we admit the dresses aren’t too flattering. True, we all must be here before most kids are getting up. But we do it anyway. Why, you ask? . . . Because we are the ROWVA Swing Choir and we love it! Starting the first week of school, Swing Choir began their morning practices to learn their routines. Dancing is not the only part of the act, but melodies and harmonies must be learned to create a well-rounded balance. Our first performance was at Meling’s in Monmouth for the Oneida Lions Club, followed by a “musical gift” show at Sandburg Mall for Christmas. January brought us the ROWVA Jazz Festival, where we learned a great deal from our judges’ critiques. The highlight of the year was the Showtime Review, an annual cabaret that showcases individual talent along with performances by the entire group. In May, Swing Choir toured the grade schools, showing the children of the district what had been accomplished. The year ended well with a performance at Knox College. 90 Swing Choir members: (back)Mark Watt. Sherry Pennington. Tammy Olson, Alexia Crouse. So we will recognize beauty, So we will be sensitive, So we will be closer to an infinite beyond this world, So we will have something to cling to, So we will have more love, more compassion, more gentleness, more goodness — in short, more life.
