Cary Johnson R.O.W.V.A.’s football fortunes in 1986 turned out to be the most succes-ful in the school’s history. This drive to success created an undefeated 9-0 regular season, the first in the 39 year history of R.O.W.V.A. High School. This undefeated regular season also claimed R.O.W.V.A.’s first Lincoln Trail Conference Championship in football at the varsity level and its second trip to the playoffs proved to be more successful than its first encounter. Again, this was a first for R.O.W.V.A.’s football program — an impressive 59-19 victory over Carthage in front of the home crowd. This drive to success started back in February with a weight training program that continued up to the opening day of August practices. This weight training built a new foundation of confidence, attitudes, and dedica- tion in being successful. This drive to success contributed towards numerous team and individual statistics — some of which are as follows: the most wins in a season (10), most points scored in a season (349), most touchdowns in a game (9), most touchdowns by an individual for one season (21 by Jon Nelson), most first downs in a season (168), most first downs rushing in a season (143), total number of offensive plays for a season (576), total number of rushing plays for a season (522), greatest number of rushing yards for a season (3044), most total offense for a season (3584) and the most total offense per game (325.8 yds). A defense which had four shutouts and allowed only 84 points for a season was lead by Jason Landers with the most tackles by an individual for a season (123), a team record for the most interceptions in one season (18) most by one player for a season (5, Jon Nelson), fewest amount of points allowed (7.6 per game), and the most kickoff returns for touchdowns in a season (4). But the ultimate reward, for this drive to success, was an outstanding year of football for the R.O.W.V.A. community, school, players, and memories for everyone involved. Drive To Success 25

Phillip Wenstrom front row: Matt Cain, Tony Morrissey, Greg Rcdnour, Greg Johnston, Cary Johnson, Shawn Reathaford, Scott Paul, and Erik Pemberton R.O.W.V.A.’s frosh-soph football team ended their season with a 4-4 record under first year coach Brian Hall. Despite the mediocre record, the team had some outstanding play from a number of returning sophomores as well as a group of hard working freshmen. The experience of the returning players plus their hard work in the off-season leads Coach Hall to be optimistic about next season. 24
