Whether it’s heavy metal, classical, jazz, country or rock ’n’ roll, music speaks to your heart, not just your head. It can make you happy, angry, excited, or depressed, and sometimes all these emotions at once. This year has been full of all these emotions, and we’ve tried to capture some of them in this yearbook. All of the headlines are titles of songs. Some titles have a special meaning and some are just for fun. A song can capture a moment like nothing else can. Often a song will remind you of what you were doing or who you were with the first time you heard it. A picture can work much the same way. A picture is a piece of time trapped on paper, and it can say much more than words. So, for the rest of this section, we’ll let the pictures do the talking, and you can do the remembering. 4 They're Playing My Song We asked several people what song described this year to them. We decided to let the words speak for themselves. Despite the mediocre record, the team had some outstanding play from a number of returning sophomores as well as a group of hard working freshmen. The experience of the returning players plus their hard work in the off-season leads Coach Hall to be optimistic about next season. 24 Drive to Success Varsity Football — back row: Scott Laird. Mike Stowe, Todd Newburgh, Shawn Reathaford, Greg Johnston. Cary Johnson R.O.W.V.A.’s football fortunes in 1986 turned out to be the most succes-ful in the school’s history. This drive to success created an undefeated 9-0 regular season, the first in the 39 year history of R.O.W.V.A. High School. This undefeated regular season also claimed R.O.W.V.A.’s first Lincoln Trail Conference Championship in football at the varsity level and its second trip to the playoffs proved to be more successful than its first encounter. Again, this was a first for R.O.W.V.A.’s football program — an impressive 59-19 victory over Carthage in front of the home crowd. This drive to success started back in February with a weight training program that continued up to the opening day of August practices. This weight training built a new foundation of confidence, attitudes, and dedica- tion in being successful. This drive to success contributed towards numerous team and individual statistics — some of which are as follows: the most wins in a season (10), most points scored in a season (349), most touchdowns in a game (9), most touchdowns by an individual for one season (21 by Jon Nelson), most first downs in a season (168), most first downs rushing in a season (143), total number of offensive plays for a season (576), total number of rushing plays for a season (522), greatest number of rushing yards for a season (3044), most total offense for a season (3584) and the most total offense per game (325.8 yds). A defense which had four shutouts and allowed only 84 points for a season was lead by Jason Landers with the most tackles by an individual for a season (123), a team record for the most interceptions in one season (18) most by one player for a season (5, Jon Nelson), fewest amount of points allowed (7.6 per game), and the most kickoff returns for touchdowns in a season (4). But the ultimate reward, for this drive to success, was an outstanding year of football for the R.O.W.V.A. community, school, players, and memories for everyone involved. My friends and fellow band members turn into the most dedicated and hard-working people. It gives you a proud feeling to be a part of the R.O.W.V.A. band. Shello Awards — Monmouth Prime Beef Festival — 2nd place in parade; Morton Pumpkin Festival Strut! Laura Orwig, Shelly Orwig, and Tricia Kalb. This year we had a student director from Monmouth College. Kendall Karrier. He had to complete outside conducting with a local school. Kendall helped us immensely and he learned a lot while teaching us. It was a new experience for the band which we all enjoyed. This year’s marching season, although rainy, was a very successful one. Along with winning many individual and group awards, the students also learned that when hard work is done by everyone, the results can be very rewarding and enjoyable for the entire band. Mr. “C” — 1st place in parade; Pekin Festival — 2nd place in field; Metamora Festival — 1st place in parade and field; and Illini Festival — 4th place in parade and field. 34 Marching Band ROWVA Marching Tigers - Drum Major - Shelly Orwig. We had everything from animal slippers to plaid robes. The grapefruit toss was supposed to be the big event of the noon hour, but no one showed up. Tuesday — On Tuesday the halls were full of tight miniskirts and multi-colored hair, representing punks. The egg toss was the most successful event of the week. “It was thoroughly enjoyable,” said senior Jeff Kremer,“especially when I hit Brent (treason below the belt with an egg.” Brent laughed, still possessing the school spirit. 38 Homecoming Spirit W Wednesday — The weather was perfect for the beach ball shuffle and many students participated. As a matter of fact, senior Joe Carr, seemed to be having so much fun that he continued playing long after the crowd had dispersed. It was beach day and many students wore their favorite Hawaiian clothes. Not only did junior Jon Nelson dress up, but so did his mother’s ironing board which spent the day as a surf board (not pictured) . Friday — Friday was full of events. The hall ROARED with black and gold so we were all psyched up for the exciting parade. After the parade was over, the student body reentered the school for a vivacious pep rally conducted by the cheerleaders. It was entertaining and we were intoxicated by the excitement for the game. Our anticipated victory quickened our heartbeats. Thursday — Again, the noon hour was successful. Many students participated in the three-legged race. The hallway was an array of obnoxiously bright and repulsive ties. Coronation and the bonfire were the excitement of the evening. Much confusion arose because it was our first bonfire in years. Many students had never witnessed such fun around a large fire. ■ WE ALL LIVE IN A YELLOW SUBMARINE! Homecoming 39 Coronation: tms rally hosted by the perky cheerleaders. Go, Fight, Win!” pounded our eardrums again and again. Soon their spirit became our spirit. The skits were so fun this year. I nearly fell down the bleachers,” giggled one freshman. I don’t know about the skits being funny, but that dance the cheerleaders performed sure was impressive!” said another enthusiastic informant. The float competition was a shocker to us all this year. The juniors slumped in with a sad fourth place, followed by seniors who rolled in with third place. Next leaked in Mr. Kraus with his sophomore class in second, and for the first time in many years the freshmen glowed with triumph, for they were the victors. The FFA rebuilt this John Deere engine which sadly died during the parade. Homecoming 43 Cara Harpman. Bill Holden. Teresa Laubach. Scott Maxwell. Carol Stewart. Candy Green, 'i roy Wolford. Candy is congratulated by fans. Justin Pogue. Paul Hickey. Laura Holmes. Bryan Holmes, and Mr. Gross take credit for creating the theme “silhouettes” for our homecoming dance. “We just grabbed people in the hall and traced their shadows”, explained senior Bryan Holmes. These creations certainly added to the ambiance of the cafetorium. Seniors Jeff Kremer and Scott Terpening preparing to airbrush the homecoming mural. It is also, however, a reassuring tale where good intentions and honesty win over greed and power. In the play, the country of Grand Fenwick is going bankrupt, and decides the best way to get money is to lose a war to the United States. The rulers send a forest ranger and three peasants to attack New York City with bows and arrows. However, when the bowmen capture a nuclear physicist who has just invented the “Q-Bomb,” the leaders are horrified to learn they have just defeated the U.S. The rest of the play centers around the struggle to lose the war, return the Q-Bomb, and marry the local princess to the hero. They sold mums during Homecoming to add to the spirit of the week. Also, they celebrated Valentine’s Day by delivering carnations and poems. They had their induction and brought nine new members into the group. They elected the following officers for next year: Jerod Gross, President; Christie Cain, Vice-president; Rob Kalb. Treasurer; Teresa Laubach, Secretary; Angie Carlson, Student Council Representative. This year they were allowed to return to Chicago. After a long bus trip, they explored the Museum of Science and Industry and ate lunch on the shores at Lake Michigan. It was not a radically different year, but it was very successful. 104 National Honor Society My Success National Honor Society New Members—Stacy Leafgreen. Scott Laird, Angie Carlson.
