For instance, one cold December afternoon Mr. Sappington announced over the loud speaker that a visitor was coming to the school—Governor James Thompson arrived about thirty minutes later. He and his entourage visited our classes and answered a few of our questions considering school consolidation. As we said before we could have made a movie with everything that happened this year, but since we didn’t make a movie we made a book instead. We hope to remind you of a lot of movies you may have seen also. Most of the headlines throughout this book are movie titles. Do you remember any of them? Amy and Angela seem to have found something interesting on the opposite page. They managed the concession stands for all the games, presented a harvesting safety school at the grade schools, sold fruit, played basketball against other chapters, purchased a computer and printer, went skiing at Snow Star, sent four members to the national FFA convention in Kansas City, hosted a market evaluation clinic for swine producers, had two calves born in the Ag shop, planted a corn variety test plot and hosted their annual banquet. While all this was going on the chapter as well as several individuals were receiving several awards. At left, Darrin Carlson and Lee Emerick are pictured holding their section foundation awards for Feed Grain Production and Wildlife management. Blake Kallenbach received tenth place in individual state crop judging. The R.O.V.A. FFA chapter won the Century Award, Superior Chapter in Safety Program, Bronze Emblem Chapter in Program of Activities and the R.O.V.A. team won eleventh place in State Crop judging. Some members were busier than others. Terri McCracken attended the Illinois Agricultural Youth Insititute in Springfield and the Farm Bureau youth offiliates conference in Decatur. They try to have a different activity each month. This year they had a weiner roast, Halloween party, section lock-in, Region 3 rally, Christmas party, visited a nursing home, had a Daddy Date Night, pizza party, took a tour of St. Mary’s, went to state convention and had their annual banquet in May. The Right Stuff The National Honor Society continued it’s traditional activities, as well as trying some new things. They started off the year by selling mums for Homecoming. Then, they continued in the flower selling theme by selling carnations for Valentine’s Day. The flowers were red or white and accompanied by a poem, and sometimes, dramatic humming. The flowers were delivered during the day, and gave people the chance to show someone special that they cared. The NHS was in for a disappointment when they began planning their annual trip. Due to a new seatbelt law, they weren’t able to go to Chicago. Instead, the group decided to visit the Amana Colonies in Iowa. Mr. Dan Renwick went with them, and they had a chance to view a different way of life and see the crafts and products that they produced in the area. At the induction ceremony, our chapter recognized and thanked the man who started NHS at R.O.V.A., Mr. William Pyle. They presented him with a plant to show their gratitude. She taught them new cheers and mounts and was always there cheering them on no matter what the crowd was doing. All of the cheerleaders agreed that the crowd was not the greatest. When the team was winning, the crowd really helped, but when the team was losing, there was very little support from the fans. Both Lynn Stotts, a junior and a cheerleader for 3 years, and Michelle Cotting-ham, also a junior and a cheerleader for 2 years, think that a good crowd should support their team at all times, no matter what the score is or how well the team is Top—Carol Stewart, second row—Noelle Snyder, Melissa Mundwiler, Amy Crouse, Karen Hutchinson; bottom—Stephanie Stotts, Melissa Carlson, Michelle Cottingham, Lynn Stotts; Splits—Kathy Carlson. playing. The season as a whole was really great. According to Noelle Snyder, a sophomore and a cheerleader for 1 year, Miss Mitchell really helped them a lot. She had a lot of good ideas and she made them work hard. But along with the hard work, they also had a lot of fun times together. Most all of the cheerleaders agree that their favorite cheer was “Master of Disaster.” Other favorite cheers were “We’re the Best Team” and “Attention.” Cheerleaders 63 A Big Hand For Varsity Volleyball-back- Candy Green, Ronette Howard, Julie Lake, Kathy Laird, Christie Canin, Tina Ryner, Heidi Nelson, Teresa Anderson, Sara Gullstrand, Wendee Weedman. front- Tori Larson, Tracey DuCharme, Shelly Orwig. Spirit Week started off with the dress-up days. The dress-up days give everyone a chance to be crazy and get hyper before the big game on Friday. Plaid Day started off the week and gave everyone a chance to participate and be as reserved or nutso as they wanted to be. Many students searched through the depths of their parents closets to show their support for R.O.V.A. During the course of the week, students dressed up like their favorite cartoon characters .(with several Annie dresses donated by the Swing Choir), the T.V. rerun heroes, and their favorite rock stars. The week was concluded with everyone donning the black and gold for Tiger Day on Friday. The traditional skit night was held on Thursday, but this year the entire program was held in the cafetorium to avoid problems with the weather. All the classes had skits and several clubs presented skits as well. Whether it was a take off on Miami Vice, an ancient Indian folk tale, a tale of life in a candy store, or life with “big Mama” all the skits were a lot of fun and enjoyed by all. After the skits came the main event, coronation. Senior class president, Julie Harpman read the names of the new Homecoming King and Queen and their court. The previous King and Quenn were unable to attend the actual coronation, although they made it to the dance, so the King and Queen from two years before, John Dennis and Debbie McNaught filled in. All-in-all, the evening was exciting and lived up to its reputation. Born A Star Is Clockwise, beginning in the upper left hand corner: Previous King and Queen, Wayne Smith and Carla Main; Freshmen attendents, Tara Marshall and Greg Johnston; Sophomore attendents, Noelle Snyder and Jason Libby; Junior attendents. Tori Larson and David Nelson; Senior attendents,Amy Crouse and Scott Dennis; King and Queen, Carol Stewart and Shawn Johnson. Below: The 1985 Homecoming Royalty including crown bearers Erin Truelove and Ryan Kalb. King and His Queen rV 3y. The Road Warriors This year, instead of just having a float competition, the Student Council sponsered an overall spirit competition. The contest had three parts: percentage participating in dress-up days, skit competition, and float competition. This contest gave a better over all picture of how many people got involved in the festivities. In the float competition the sophomores won. The seniors won the dress up days competition. The sophomores won the skit competition. Everyone had a good time and showed their pride in their school. Homecoming 75 Animal House Friday after the parade we had a pep assembly. The cheerleaders helped everyone get psyched-up for the big game. The pep band played, the cheerleaders yelled, and everyone became hysterical— or pretty close. The highlight came when the teachers got revenge on their favorite students by imitating them in a hilarious skit. Representing jocks, brown nosers, nerds, trouble makers, flirts, peppy cheerleaders, and jerks, the teachers showed us a little bit of ourselves and added a lot of life to the celebration. 76 Homecoming A Night In Heaven Oh, Brother! This year the R.O.V.A. had two fall plays for the price of one. The first was a comedy farce called “Oh, Brother!” It followed the perils of Aggie, an only child who is about to be “blessed” with a new baby brother (or sister!), and Jacque, a Shakesperean actor with a severe case of melancholia. Together they experience the seven stages of man, beginning with the drooling infant and ending with old age. Jacque inadvertantly convinces Aggie that a brother wouldn’t be so bad after all, and Aggie shows Jacque that life is really worth living. They discover all this just before the birth of Aggie’s sibling... who’s a girl. The second play recounts the adventures of an extremely sophisticated bum named Lemuel T. Thwack-busher. It was entitled “The Cop and the Anthem” and was based on the work by 0. Henry. Lemuel is seeking a haven from the hazards of winter on Blackwells’s Island, the local prison. Although he tries his best to get arrested, he can’t seem to manage it. Lemuel attempts theft, debt, vandalism, and even “mashing” innocent females, all to no avail. At last, inspired by the organ music of a nearby church, Lemuel is reformed. He decides to clean up his life just before he’s arrested for loitering. Everyone had a lot of fun presenting these plays and even though Mrs. Mottaz was on the verge of a nervous breakdown, she held together and the plays were successes. The Tigresses went on to the sectional at Abingdon and the whole community was behind them. They rolled past Brimfield with few problems despite Heidi’s misfortunate case of the flu. Next they took on the Monmouth Zipperettes and that proved to be quite a fight. The Tigresses came out on top after two exciting overtimes. R.O.V.A. fans had to travel a little farther to the super sectional at Hamilton but that didn’t stop them from backing the girls. Usual performances on the agenda, like the Christmas and winter concerts, went the best ever. At organizational contest, the band received straight I’s, a great acheivement few other bands came close to and none reached that day. Then the band went to Champaign and received a disappointing second place but recovered a little after pigging out at Bishop’s. At the annual Parade of Bands, awards were given and the tearful seniors played their last concert. At Augustana College’s Jazz Festival in December, the band won even after sight reading in total darkness. The band also received first place at the R.O.V.A. Jazz Festival and second at W.I.U.’s Festival. The band also went to Kirksville and ate lots and lots of pizza. We performed at St, Mary’s Square followed by more pizza and finished off the year at an insurance convention at Jumers- and yes, there was pizza after that too. The best improvement we made was that everyone in the jazz band found they could improv. and everybody actually did it and improved because of it. Jazz Band 95 Every- body Sing! Senior Personalities 129 The Graduates The Final Countdown Our Class Book by Chad Landers A book was begun on that day The ending to be four years away Some chapters long, some perhaps short They were to be of every sort. The first began “The Freshman Year” It was filled with hope and fear What to expect? What to believe? It was all hard to conceive. The mighty Seniors tall and proud Is INITIATION still allowed? We made it through, though just barely Some pennies pushed, though very rarely By that time came the next few chapter We proved we were quite good adapters Then came health and driver’s ed. Would my partner kill me dead? Another vict’ry, can we lose? I got my license, such good news The year then ended, two more to go Would we last? No one could know. 134 Seniors New chapter written oh so quick Our book was getting so very thick Upperclassmen, there we were Were we ever happier? We’d made it to the varsity No time to spend on chemistry The games were harder and oh so tough But we were diamonds in the rough In the-blink-of-an-eye our first prom near Pizza selling time was here The prom was good but who’d have bet We’d go so far down into debt Junior marshalls--NHS Dress-up days were in excess Graduation hot and heavy All the girls in such a bevy They all smiled but shed a tear We would find out why next year And then it came out of the blue I’m a SENIOR! How do you do? It was here it was so strange Our turn to get rid of small change Our final year—our last hurrah Before soon leaving ma and pa An int’resting group in many ways Wond’ring “Where were the ’good ole days’? The years had come the years had gone But the horizon shows a newer dawn A bright future is up ahead To college or to work instead? Fellow seniors on ’morrows eve Are you sure you are ready to go and leave? Never fear I know we’ll make it We won’t even have to fake it To R.O.V.A. High we wish farewell But we’ll be back to sit a spell In the future-what’s in store? I guess the years we’ll wait four more So instead of having our book close I’ll reveal—there’s no end to this prose. For the future is an open book All you have to do is look My friends, I will say ’’Goodbye, then God bless you, good luck, and Amen.
