ADAMS Junior Editor Trudy Johnson Junior Editor Carol Rednour Senior Editor Suzie Dennis Many fond memories of the 1965-66 school year are shared by the students of old R.O.V.A. High. Classes began late in August, and we all had to adjust to new courses and teachers and to become familiar with the faces of 80 new freshmen. Along with our memories of fall come those of the big homecoming game, dance, and parade. The basketball team showed considerable improvement. They ended the season with a Little Six record of 4 wins and 6 losses. The Student Council sponsored our first semi-formal winter ball late in January. In February the voters of the district passed a bond issue to finance a new lunch room and auditorium. The building will be ready for use in the fall of 1966. Galva High School was admitted into the Little Six Conference this year. During the months of February, March, April, and May the student body participated in the Sadie Hawkins Dance, the Farmer's Ball, the all school play, the long awaited Junior-Senior Prom, and the musical. Graduation rolled around May J7 to complete the scrapbook of high school memories for the seniors and turn the thoughts of those who are left behind to the events of next year. L. TO R.: R. Beautiful October weather provided the perfect setting for the 1965 R.O.V.A. Home- October 15. with the judging of the floats, and pep talks at the pep meeting. A snake dance on the football field and the burning of the dummy kicked off the evening excitement and the air was filled with BEAT ALEXIS! Half time ceremonies dates, and a marching band program. The Tigers fought hard throughout the game, but scored a touchdown. As the final horn sound - coronation of the king and queen completed the homecoming activities for 1965. love conquers SENIORS ROVA Place Float SOPHS. COACH WISH We fought hard COACH BA VERY and learned well. SENIOR LINE Small but mighty. BEN CLAY BOB MASSEY ANDY NEIL We're good! Just ask us. DON HENNENFENT GLENN TOM PUGH VARSITY SQUAD R.O.V.A. started this season with a new coach in command and a relatively unexperienced team. With coach Bill Wise leading the tigers and coach Bill Bavery assisting, we won our first game of the season. The victory, however,, was short lived, and we dropped our next six games before we beat the highly ranked Costa. We then lost our final encounter of the season to Warren, thus ending the season with a 2 and 7 record. Practice was long and hard! JUNIOR VARSITY Under the guidance of coach Jim Pogue, the junior tigers took second in the little four conference and compiled an impressive four and two record. This leads us to believe that if they come along in the future years as they did this year, the winning side of the scoreboard will soon show a great change. Mush!! We thrived on action!! LETTERMEN’S CLUB This year the Lettermen's Club, which is advised by Mr. Adams, is led by Dennis Bjorling, President; Dennis Johnson, Vice President; Dan Holmes, Secretary; Dave Holmes, Student Council; and Gary Miller, Treasurer. The year started out with the Lettermen deciding to spend some of its money to buy film so that some of the football games could be filmed. With the end of football and the beginning of basketball several of the boys helped with basketball games by selling tickets, working in the coat check, and sweeping floors during intermission. The club also made it possible for R.O.V.A. to hold a well-planned Regional Tournament. In the spring came track and the Lettermen were there to assist in any way they could. The Lettermen's Club has been a busy organization this year and has done a great deal for the school athletic program, as well as for the proud traditions of the R.O.V.A. They won the Knox County Frosh-Soph Tourney and placed second in the conference. This leads the ROVA fans to believe that in the next few years the team should have a very good record. The Freshman team also compiled a winning season with 3 wins and 2 losses. These two teams were coached by Mr. Bavery, who is in his first year of coaching here at ROVA. Sophomore Team BEST RECORD IN THREE YEARS!! This years tigers, short on height and speed, racked up the best record we've had in three seasons. Our standing in the Little Six was upped from sixth to fourth, and next year shows even greater promises. Coached by Jim Pogue, our tigers played on courage and determination as we were one of the smallest teams to take to the floor in the conference. 60 Freshman Team This year's Junior Varsity, coached by Bill Bavery, com piled an eleven and nine record for the season. This commendable record was backed by the Knox County Tournament Title in the Junior Varsity division. This team shows great promise for future varsity squads. 61 Debate Team J. Bjorling, R. Westerdale, G. Gibbs, A. Anderson, G. Gibbs District Winners R.O.V A. students participated in many speech events this winter. CYNTHIA DIANE BULSON NANCY ELIZABETH HOLMES Cindy Nancy Treasurer Student Council Rep. As we. the class of 1966, look back on our days at R.O.V.A., we realize how many fond memories we have gathered during this time. From our first day as freshmen to our big day as graduating seniors, each day was filled with moments to remember. As freshmen we were nervous and frightened at the thought of being a high school student. But we were quick to overcome this fear and began to enjoy each day. Our sophomore year brought our first experiences in driving a car. As juniors we showed our talent in our presentations of our play The Late Christopher Bean and our prom, The Old South. Then finally it came, our proud year as seniors. The days seemed to fly by until the last one; our graduation day. This last day came bringing to a close our four glorious years in high school. We will always remember our past days at R.O.V.A. high, but now we must look ahead to our future and to our dreams. 88 LINDA MAE BOYER Linda JUDITH MARIE BRANDENBERG Judy BARBARA JEAN BRENNAN Barb OUR SENIOR YEAR BECKY JANE DENNIS SUSAN LEE DENNIS CHERYL JEANNE EAGLE Beck” Suzic Cheryl” MARILYN IRENE ERICKSON Marilyn VICKI MARIE FLACK Vic DANNY THOMAS GALE Danny MARGARET ANN GERTH Margy WILLIAM JAMES HENDERSON Piddle WAS THE BEST DAVID LEE HENDRICKS DONALD JAMES HENNENFENT PAULA KAY HENRY Dave Don Paula DAVID RICHARD HOLMES Bazz MICHAEL WALTER HOLMES Mike LeROY E. TOM YEAST: IIEC I.2.3.4. SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES 97 SENIOR PROPHECY Twenty-five years have passed since CINDY BULSON'S last party. She decided it was time to reunite the class. Checking the list posted on the Oneida Bulletin board she finds that nearly the entire class is planning to attend. Wondering what her old classmates are doing, she inquires at the local grocery store where she finds BUNNY POGUE is still check-out clerk with the added job of town gossip. She inquires first of her old flame, DAVE HOLMES. Bun tells her that Dave has replaced Cassious Clay as the king. We find that NANCY HOLMES faithfully cheers Dave as he yells I'm the King! Going on down the list we find out that ROGER BICE is starting a weight reducing salon in partnership with INA BENSON. Business is booming with MARILYN ERICKSON as their most regular customer. GAYE RENSTED is the oldest candy striper in Kewanee Public Hospital. SUZIE DENNIS is now the goalie of the Chicago Blackhawk Hockey Team. ROLLIE MOORE, a U of I graduate, is now an up and coming farmer, while FRAN MAIN, his chief assistant, plays flute solos to soothe his milk cows. DENNIS BJORLING is now a mechanic at Inman's Pontiac. This saves him a labor bill as he now makes his own weekly transmission repairs. COLLEEN MILLS is pictured on the back of Life Magazine in a Breck Ad. NANCY SWANSON, the leader of the American Communist party, has just hired Mr. Paul to recruit new members from his American Problems Class. BOB KLINEFELTER is now following his sisters footsteps--no he's not a teacher, he breeds poodles. CAROL NASLUND is a forward on the Chicago Blackhawk Hockey Team. ALAN HOLDEN and WAYNE SYRKEL, alias Bird and Turk, now run a poultry farm. BECKY CRASH TURNER has just had her 193rd wreck and has taken her car to DON WHITMAN and DAVE McCLAY'S body shop. Now we find JEAN BJORLING feeding answers to a $4 million IBM computer. LESLIE RYLANDER Wessles is carrying on with the Wessels tradition and is now the mother of 4 of the wildest boys ever to attend ROVA. ANN ANDERSON'S bank, which she inherited from her father, failed because DENNIS SHEA's fortune which he withdrew caused it to do so. Incidentally, Dennis made his fortune while working for the County Highway Department. NANCY REYNOLDS is a cheerleader for the Chicago Blackhawk Hockey Team. ANDY NEIL and DENNIS JOHNSON are proprietors of Louies Liquor Joint. Cindy interrupts here to ask Bun, Who's Louie? Bun doesn't seem to know. LARRY OLSON is a famous Altonian Rhino hunter. The latest news on REX WESSLES is that he got his teeth knocked out by a flying hockey puck. BOB MUNSON, through scientific discovery has found a cigarette that leaves no telltale odor. JACK STROM has finally accomplished his goal in life-to prove that blondes do have more fun. GENIROZO is now making a copywrite song of Only in America! LEROY HUFF resigned from working at Lee Implement Co. for a better paying job as janitor of the hockey stadium. DANNY GALE is farming with his father and has just purchased a tractor to go with his truck. ERMA REEM is Rio's first full-fledged woman vet. CAROL OSBERG is now teaching an elementary class at ROVA. In her class are two of Leslie’s boys. BARB BRENNAN, Home Ec. teacher at ROVA is giving marriage counsel quizzes to her students. BEN CLAY, the leading proprietor of Teen-a-go-go has been locked up in a cage by his leading go-go girl, PAULA HENRY. LARRY JOHNSON runs the concession stand at the Chicago Blackhawk Hockey games. LINDA JOHNSON is now pit chairman at the Cordova drag strip. 101 MIKE HOLMES has received the position of chief cartoonist of the Esquire Magazine. DON HENNEFENT, after graduating from college, is once again Oneida's garbage collector. DAVID HENDRICKS is now traveling from school to school demonstrating the art of glass blowing to student assemblies. BECKY DENNIS, now with her 4th diamond--having lost the other 3 (so Larry thinks)-is now unable to move her hand from all the weight of the ring. Her rings just keep getting bigger and bigger. MARGYGERTH is the leader of the Star Spangled Banner before each hockey game. SHARON STONE, a newly ordained Nun, not by choice of course, is listening to the leader of the Local John Birch Society, Linda Boyer, confess the clubs recent activities. BOB MASSEY, LARRY HUFFMAN, DENNIS KISTLER, and BILL HENDERSON all joined the Navy. We find Bob is swabbing decks with Larry as his assistant; Dennis, being well traveled, has become an expert measurement guesser of French girls; and Bill, following his high school career of chasing girls in his flopseat rambler is now in the brig for taking an African chief's daughter for a moonlight ride in the PT-109. SANDI LARSON and VICKI FLACK now have their own profitable business. They run the Sunny Sewing Supply Shop in the ROVA district. CHERYL EAGLE is now teaching the Hell Drivers the art of safety rolling cars. JANET ROY and JUDY BRANDENBERG are co-wardens at the Joliet State Prison. They received this job because of the cold hearted way they ran the ROVA library. JOHN TODD is the proud manager of the Chicago Blackhawk Hockey team. As we return to Cindy's plans for her party, we find that the refreshments have changed from her last overnight party, but the games are the same. MEMORIES These four Seniors read the History, Poem, Wills, Song, and Prophecy during the Senior Assembly. fliJf 1 May 27. 1966--A beautiful Graduation Day for 61 seniors. This long awaited day had finally come but all too soon. The Commencement speaker, Dr. Theodore Khan addressed the class with his speech, Youth in a Changing World. After re' ceiving our diplomas, we flipped our tassels. These proud moments will always be remembered. Youth in a changing World was Dr. Theodore Khan’s speech that he addressed to the Graduating Seniors. Jr. Marshals: Carol Rednour and The Madrigal sang a selection of John Pitman songs during Commencement. 103 GRADUATION MEANS Gaye Rensted and Dave Holmes are citizenship winners. Nancy Holmes won the DAR award. GOOD-BYE Geni Rozo is proud to receive her second diploma. A time for joy!” A congestion of excitement as we leave the halls of R.O.V.A. High School. 104
