St Smid arranging your guided tour.............. co-editors . . Elaine Holmes Larry Carlson tour sponsor .... Mr. R. M. Babich In the past years, our annual has been dedicated to someone who has given his time and talent to the school, usually in the form of teaching and the sponsoring of extracurricular activities. This year we are proud to honor a person who has served Rova in a different way. This person can count among her friends the entire student body and faculty. In her four years of service, she has helped to make our days brighter with her friendly advice and her willingness to cooperate. If our praises are any indication of her place in our school life, you well realize that this dedication is not a sufficient reward. After observing her daily, we know that she is constantly on the go,” which makes us stop and wonder how, with all this work, she can still find time to give each individual so much of her attention and so much of herself. This is why we dedicate the ’60 Rovan, with profound admiration, to our school secretary and friend, Mrs. Katherine Holmes. ft An exclamation point is all we can use to express our excitement over the 1960 ROVAN. This year we have chosen to organize our year’s chronicle on the basis of a comparison with our school as a small town. Our Town of ROVA contains all the basic elements of any self-respecting community--a city council; businesses large and small; music, athletic and recreational facilities; and most important of all-a census of the population who, by working together, have established an idea for which our town stands--solidarity! Like most towns, ours has a city council. Working together, the members of our city council pass and enforce the laws and ordinances which govern the people of our town. Individually they se': examples for the town’s citizens through their leadership and cooperation. Such a city council is an asset to any town. Like any other town, ROVA has its civic leaders. “Our Town’s” leaders are, Mr. McKibben, our superintendent, Mr. Rushing, our principal, and our Board of Education. In sirumcntal Every village has Its city employees and our town Is no exception. tdy EmployM Working every day at their various tasks, whether preparing food for the masses, providing a transportation system or even cleaning up after and maintaining public property, our city servants are always cheerful, helpful and understanding. Big Business is represented at ROVA by the many clubs and organizations. The years stock averages prove that our leaders have indeed done their best to make our clubs prosperous and rewarding. This chapter of our school life reveals the stockholders of our community, who have a definite stake in the success and operations of ROVA'S “Big Business.” FRONT ROW; Mr. Walker, Advisor; BobLundeen, John Rylander. HoU(L Studwt toiMjl The school year 1959-60 has been a year of many accomplishments for the ROVA Student Council. Formost among things promoted was the passing and ratification of the new constitution replacing the old constitution which was considered out of date. An important part of the constitution will be the new extra-curricular “point system” which will limit the number of offices a student may hold in one academic year. Other functions of the student council in the past year included their yearly duty of sponsoring and controlling the annual Homecoming celebration, promoting the Christmas Dance, and extending hospitality to visiting athletic teams which compete at ROVA. The Student Council can justly feel that they have had a year abounding in important service administration. 18 Our Tri-M chapter has been very active this year on both the local and state level. Mr. DeVore served as State Sponsor and Dixie Krantz served as State Vice-President. Our chapter officers were, bottom picture. Martha Asplund, President, Steve McGill, Vice-President; Dixie Krantz, Historian; Mary E. Rushing, Secretary; Kate Brown, Treasurer; Mrs. King and Mr. DeVore served as sponsors for our organization. Five new members were inducted into the Modern Music Masters at the second semester. They are, Dick Holmes, John Timmons, Darlene Olmstead, Sharon Royer, and Carol Fahnstrom. These members brought our total active membership to 34. The ROVAN staff wishes to congratulate Elaine Holmes and Larry Carlson for their fine leadership in producing the 1960 ROVAN. Thanks are also due Mr. Babich, our able advisor. Under these leaders, we feel we have produced an enjoyable ROVAN. We hope you agree. 1960 ROVAN STAFF CO-EDITORS, Elaine Holmes and Larry Carlson; COPY EDITORS, Mary Ellen Rushing, Connie Hurr; BUSINESS MANAGER, Max Wisgerhof; ASSISTANT BUSINESS MANAGER, Jon Timmons; ART EDITOR, Martha Asplund; ASSISTANT ART EDITOR Sharon Royer; SPORTS EDITORS, Dixie Krantz, Sandra Gehring; CLUB EDITORS, David Carlson, Ann Lake; CLASS EDITORS, Rosalie Milroy, Linda Johnston; MUSIC EDITOR, Ann Mc-master; ACTIVITY EDITORS, Nancy Bolin, Darlyne Olmstead; FACULTY EDITOR, Diane Hildebrands; PHOTOGRAPHY EDITOR, Katherine Brown--PHOTOGRAPHERS, Carol McMaster, Cecil Duffy, Larry Holden, Curtis Cook, Dan Tingleaf; TYPISTS, Janice King, Janet King, Beth House, Carolyn Mitchell, Carol Fahnstrom, ADVISOR, Mr. R. Schraudenbach R OVA’S National Honor Society chapter this year installed six new members to their honored membership. As in the past, the NHS is an honor group of students selected from the junior and senior classes that are outstanding in the four fields of citizenship, scholarship, leadership and service. A project of this year’s membership was to offer to the ROVA student body an opportunity to purchase several well chosen and recommended high school level reading materials for a nominal cost from a paper bound book publisher. 1959-60 NHS officers were: R. Lundeen, President; R. Wright, Vice-President; E. House, Secretary; D. Krantz, Treasurer; Janice King, Parliamentarian. 21 'Jiood He-Cum Like all towns, ROVA has a newspaper. This paper has been printed since ROVA became a unit in 1949. The paper, known to all as the HI CRIER, is published monthly under the direction of Mrs. Upson, the advisor, and editor, Beth House. A new project with the ROVA chapter of the Illinois Industrial Education Club this year was the popcorn concession at all home football and basketball games. The concession was attended and operated by the various club members. This year’s profits went towards purchase of a drill for the shop, state convention fees, and the annual Father-Son banquet. Again this year, the I.I.E.C., with the F.H.A., co-sponsored the annual Sweetheart Dance which was held on St. Valentine’s Day. OFFICERS--Left to Right: G. Hazen, Treasurer; D. Eiker, Student Council Representative; G. Pittard, Secretary; Mr. J. Case, Advisor; S. Swanson, Parliamentarian; M.Swan-son, President; R. Woodside, Vice-President. 23 The ROVA Chapter of the Future Farmers of America has completed one of the most active years in its history. Spurred on by their motto, “I believe in the future of farming with a faith born of deeds not of words ”, the membership of F.F.A. has completed a year of service to school and community, statewide F.F.A. competition, and various social occasions. Beginning last fall, the F.F.A. sponsored and manned the concessions stand at all home football games. Into winter and spring, the group was involved in preparations for state-wide competition in both speech and parliamentary procedure contests. The Farmer’s Ball, co-sponsored with the F.H.A., was again the social highlight of the year. Juttm Jmmcm fltmm FFA OFFICERS—KNEELING IN FRONT: R. Vande Walle, Secretary. BACK ROW: Left to Right: J. The girls have participated in the activity nights and the slumber party where softball, volleyball, and table tennis were played. Two ROVA G.A.A. representatives were sent to G.A.A. camp. 25 The 1960 FHAers have spent a busy year. Activities included Sweetheart Dance, Farmer’s Ball, candy sales at noon, window displays, section rally, Spring Style Show, and Daddy-Date night. The girls deserve congratulations for their hard work. Leading the group were Carol Fahnstrom, President and Mrs. Anderson, Advisor. 1960 FHA OFFICERS--President, C. Fahnstrom; Vice-President, C. Simpson; Parliamentarian, J. Hendricks; Student Council Representative, J. Aden; Advisor, Mrs. Anderson. JLdwumi An important function of the ROVA library or information center is to provide all students with aid and direction in locating and using the many reference and fictional books and materials housed there. An indispensable help to our school librarian. Miss Morrissey, has been this group of seven assistant librarians. Devoting their study-hall time to service, these students are constantly checking books in and out, noting fines, rearranging shelves and logging new arrivals so that they will be available to the general student body in as short a time as possible. Outstanding among “our town’s” civil servants are the assistant librarians. ABOVE, SEATED: Linda Andrews, Pat Newman. STANDING: Bill Wessels, Bonnie Colclaser. TOP PICTURE: B. Colclaser, D. OFFICERS: Jerry Sorn- berger, Secretary; Max Wisgerhof, Vice-president; Don Eiker, President; Bob Wright, Treasurer; Catherine Brown, Student Council Representative; Advisors, Wm. Spicer, Mrs. I. King, Mr. Wm. Adams. The senior citizens of our town have spent an enjoyable and profitable year. It has been a busy year but the Classof ’60has been able to take everything in stride and make a good year of it. The members of the class joined forces to sponsor the Fall Mixer, the first prize float at Homecoming, and a class play, Grandma’s Best Years.” The spring months offered more activities for the class. The Juniors entertained us in excellent style at the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom, and then in May, 37 of us went to Kirkwood Lodge with our sponsors for the class trip. Our senior year was brought to a close with Baccalaureate and Commencement exercises on June 5th and 7th, respectively. Forty-nine seniors received their diplomas and then left “Our Town” to become citizens of the world. 30 Left. Uimucu The Class of 61 entered the halls of ROVA with 63 class members. In these three years of our high school career, we have lost six of our class and now have 57 members. The first big event for us was the annual Homecoming. The theme of our float was “Steps to Victory. The high school dances which followed were new experiences to us all. During our sophomore year we were more acquainted and many of the faces in the hall were old familiar ones. Now, as juniors, we were well rooted and we enjoyed being hosts to the senior class at the prom. The prom was held in the Kewanee Hotel with the theme “An Evening in the Orient. As underclassmen we are looking forward to our final years, which will doubtless bring increased responsibility that will be helpful to us throughout our lives. Our accomplishments during the past months included adding an extra sparkle to the Homecoming celebration with our float and attendants. During football and basketball games, cheery sophomore faces slaved behind concession booths and persuaded loving parents to buy programs. Think also of our athletes who have already proven an asset to ROVA. Just as a book is not complete without its cover, neither is “Our Town complete without the Sophomore Class. 59 LEFT TO RIGHT: B. At homecoming time the freshmen constructed a crepe paper float for school competition and offered four candidates for king and queen competition. Later on in the year, freshmen showed a good majority in attendance at other school parties. They were always ready and willing to participate, especially at the informal dance of the year, the Farmer’s Ball. The freshman class is also showing apromiseof good years to come in the field of atheltics. Every fall, winter and spring, a magestic concert is given to the general patrons of our town. The music produced is greatly appreciated by the many local music lovers. toimt 'JOxud Important in any community are the musical outlets it provides for the enjoyment of the inhabitants, both as participants and observers. An important part of the ROVA music program is the seventy-five piece concert and marching band. Conducted by experienced and respected director Wm, DeVore, the concert band has performed ably at the annual winter and spring concerts. The concerts were received well and proved to be highpoints of the musical year. The band also produced a successful saxophone ensemble at the State District competition in Moline. Band work at ROVA is considered serious business and is started and supervised by Mr. DeVore from the sixth grade at all the elementary schools, through the seventli and eighth grade. The marching band also marched in the Altona Memorial Day parade, as part of the year’s activities. Other projects included providing a pep band to play at home basketball games. Performing for the second year under the guidance of vocal music instructor, Mrs. L. King, the ROVA choristers continued to register many successes. The ROVA Mixed Chorus, composed of both boys and girls of all classes in school, presented two successful concerts again this year. Both the Christmas and Spring concerts were well attended and appreciated. The Mixed Chorus also performed during the all-school Christmas party and added much to the spirit of the occasion. Accompanists for this year’s Mixed Chorus were Ann McMaster, junior and Beverly Moore, sophomore. The ROVA Girls’ Chorus provided, again this year, opportunity for many girls to sing in group and perform before an audience. Once again this year, the hit of the dance season was the annually held Farmer’s Ball. Rarely a year goes by but the Farmer’s Ball is proclaimed the “hit of the season.’’ 'fyvm Oh Social Homecoming 1959 was definitely one of the highlights of the school year at ROVA. Excited students began to work on floats days before, and when October 23 finally came, everything was ready for the parade and judging of floats. The first place Senior float, with the slogan We Auto Win, carried out the central theme of the parade, Travel Through Time. The Freshmen received second place for their float, the Juniors received third, and the Sophomores last. The coming of evening heralded the burning of the dummy and an action packed pep session. During the big game, the ROVA eleven earned a convincing victory over the Friars of Corpus Christi. The days activities were rounded out with the dance, and the crowning of King Don Eiker and Queen Sharon King, with Joby Leafgreen and Stan Carr as honorary attendants. Representing the other classes as attendants to the King and Queen were: Juniors: Carol McMaster, Mervyn Swanson; Sophomores: Janita Faye, Gary Hazen; Freshmen: Laura Rushing, Dennis Nelson. The informality, and the fun of square dancing make this dance one that will continue from year to year. Christmas Dance — On December 19, we danced to the music of the Don Klutes band, of Alexis. The Christmas dance has traditionally been one of the more important dances of the year. This year, the theme, Frosted Frolics was used to add a holiday atmosphere to the fun. The Student Council did a fine job of supervising the preparations which made the dance a success. Junior-Senior Prom — The Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom was held on April 30th at the Kewanee Hotel. The Juniors were hosts to the Seniors, and did a fine job of entertaining them. Stan Andrews was master of ceremonies at the banquet, and a wonderful supper was served. Evening in the Orient was the theme of the prom and Japanese lanterns, cherry blossom trees, and a tea house turned the ballroom into an Oriental paradise.
