Senior Class History The Graduating Class of 1959 of ROVA High School began our high school days as frestimen in 1955 with Dale Peacock as our President, The Freshmen took an active part in the annual Homecoming with the help of our class sponsors, Mrs. McNeil and Mr. Case. We entered our flying saucer float with the theme “ROVA Mars Corpus” and we were all very proud to hear that we tied with the seniors for first in the parade. Dale Peacock and Diane Whiting graced the royal stage as our attendants with David Flack and Lolly Ehler as honorary attendants. As our Sophomore year began, once again the election was held with George Reynolds as our class President. The Homecoming was very successful that year and our class entered a float of a train with the theme “ROVA Choos the Bullets.” Sue Carlson and Earl Copeland were attendants to the King and Queen and Elaine Binno and Phillip Henderson were honorary attendants. Our class sponsors were Mr. Newland and Mr. Messmore that year. Our Junior year began with the election of Earl Copeland as President. The class sponsors were Mrs. Upson, Mr. Case, and Mr. Schraudenbach. The float which we entered in the Homecoming parade was a book with the theme of “Footnotes to Victory.” Our King and Queen attendants were Sharon Libby and Earl Copeland, and Elaine Binno and Jerry Murdock were honorary attendants. The Junior - Senior Prom was held at the Galesburg Club on May 17. Our Prom theme was “Swinging Into Space.” The theme was carried out with white and lavender lilacs which were class flowers and colors respectively. Our class motto is Future Unlimited.” During our junior year, we also got our class rings which we ordered from Herff Jones Company. The name of the ring is “Lucky Star.” With the junior year, came the first of our class plays, presented in the Junior High Gymnasium, a three-act comedy Hobgoblin House.” Leading lady was Marian McKibben, and leading man was Dale Peacock. Our senior year finally rolled around, a year we were all looking forward to with anticipation. David Flack was elected as president and the class sponsors were Mr. Adams, and Mr. Spicer. Two members of our class were chosen as editors of our literary publications. Elaine Binno was chosen as head of the Hi-Crier, and Sue Carlson as head of the ROVAN. We were pleased to know that our float, “Sailing To Victory, won second place in the Homecoming parade. The Senior class was very proud to present Sharon Libby as Queen, and Dave Flack as King, at the Homecoming Dance. Phil Henderson and Connie Smith were the honorary attendants. All four of the students were very well suited for the position and we are sure everyone was proud to have them honoring our class. November 13 and 14 in the Junior High Gymnasium, the Seniors presented a three-act comedy “Rest Assured.” The leading lady and man were Connie McGaan and Jim King, respectively. May 24 through May 26, the Senior class stayed at Kirkwood Lodge in the Ozarks. We were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Messmore and Mr. and Mrs. Adams. On June 1, Commencement took place, another class left the halls of ROVA High. 21 Junior Officers PRESIDENT VICE-PRESIDENT . . Weedman, R. Naslund, T. Johnson. Librarians ROVA High School library, the ‘‘supply house” for the students is the only department in the high school which depends upon student assistants as staff members. The students who have completed the course of training to assist in the maintenance of library service are John Timmons, Bonnie Colklaser, Sharon King, Donna Faurot, Alice Weedman, Connie Hurr, and Mary Landers. Each student librarian is trained to a certain task and is indeed a specialist in that she knows what her responsibilities are and that it is a violation of the rules for her to assume another’s duties or expect help with her assigned task. The number of recreational reading books, periodicals and LP records in the music appreciation classification have greatly increased this year. 5362 books circulated during the 1958-59 school year. The loss of books was negligible. 52 Parties The Fall Mixer “Poh Rebmetpes” covered the red wall of the study hall as bashful freshman boys were snatched up by eager upperclass girls, and freshman girls were rushed by upperclass boys. Did this this leave the sophomores out? Fun was had by almost everyone. Homecoming This was, with room for reasonable doubt, the most popular dance of the year. All will agree that the hour between 11:30 and 12:30 was the climax. It was enjoyed thoroughly by the 4 couples that were still there. The decorations were nice. Christmas Dance The student council worked hard on the decorations for this dance, and came up with a theme with almost ethereal loveliness. The theme for the dance was “Crimson Crystals,” and a good time was had by ALL. Sweetheart Dance Bette Sherman, queen, and Mervin Swanson, king, reigned as the royal couple for the sweetheart dance. Bette was chosen as a result of her efforts in decorating and producing the prettiest valentine box. Mervin was chosen by his fellow EEC members. Farmer's Ball Without a doubt, the farmer’s dance was the best loved dance of the year. The school clothes and square dancing made the pleasant informality of the evening enjoyed by everyone. King was Mike Gregg of Knoxville, Donna Hazen’s date for the evening. Queen was Ann Lake. The Junior-Senior Prom The seniors were well pleased by the dance given for them by the juniors. The dinner, a smorgasbord was the best meal enjoyed at the banquet for many years. The program following the meal was a great success. Congratulations to the juniors for sponsoring such an enjoyable fete. 53 Girls’ Chorus and Ensembles FIRST ROW: S. Peterson, C. Fahnstrom, J. Chapman, S. Carlson, E. Holmes, S. King, S. The Girls' Chorus, of eighty-three, had a successful year with appearances at both District and State Contests. Junior and Senior Ensembles and Boys’ Octet were selected and performed at several occasions throughout the year. A Christmas program was presented in December and the Spring Concert was given May 6. The morning schedule began with class meetings to vote for king and queen and their attendants. Then everyone resumed work on floats, putting the finishing touches on for the parade and judging of the afternoon. Evening came, with the Aledo Green Dragons defeating our Tigers 36-0. But as soon as the strains of Gordon Sunberg's band started at 9:30, the defeat of an hour before was forgotten. 60 The highlight of the dance was the crowning of King David Flack and Queen Sharon Libby. Athletics Our Coaches Teaching a class one minute, and being ready to go out on a field of combat with a winning team is hard for any human being, but our coaches, Mr. Adams, and Mr. Messmore, have done just that for many years. Mr. Messmore specializes in basketball and baseball with Mr. Adams backing him up. Mr. Adams does a good job with our football and track teams. When our team isn’t winning, we tend to criticize these men for doing what we consider an inadequate job. If we would only stop and realize their dual jobs as coaches and teachers, plus their obligations to their families and home, we would see what a tremendous amount of work this must take. These men must sit by and watch a team make a mistake over and over again, and try to correct it, and many times this mistake is repeated in a game. They must try to make a winning team out of the most impossible material, and keep up the spirit when that team loses. They must shut out the noise of the disgusted crowd, and do what they think is best, without prejudice or partiality. They must contend with the boys who don’t want to work, and with the “grandstanders.” They have a big job, and we shouldn’t lose sight of this fact. These are the coaches of ROVA High. They are doing their best, both as teachers and men. It us up to every student and athlete in ROVA High to make Mr. Adams and Mr. Messmore’s jobs as rewarding and satisfying as have been the rewards and satisfactions they have made possible to us. 63 MR.
