Frances Tully Dawn McSweyn Valedictorian Deanna Turley Daryl Gebhardt Tina Butterfield Saluta torian Traci Pertile Doug Armstrong Julie Evans Wendy Evans ADDRESS DELIVERED TO NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY October 27, 1980 by State Representative Gay Holliday I want to offer my congratulations and best wishes to each of you receiving this great honor tonite and also thank you for letting me be both a part of the ceremonies and a small part of your lives. By your accomplishments, you have Upped your potential. Most of us never do • we go thru life, operating below capacity, but you have proven your ability in a life that has only begun, and as adults, I know and you know that you will always meet your own expectations. Be proud of your accomplishments. You have received something special tonite. so praise yourself for it and relish the experience. We all love praise, but have you ever noticed how quickly a compliment wears off? Only when we commend ourselves, does the glow stay with us. As young adults, you have already esUblished the opportunities and the ability to go on to successful, meaningful lives. And to accomplish that will depend upon your feelings and responsibilities of yourself and towards others. Two of the most, important factors in the realities of life is - first - to be a friend to yourself and to have faith and trust in others. You must develop the belief in yourself as a human being, living each day fully and not fleeing from the demands of life . If you truly accept yourself and the world you live in. you are laying the groundwork for a truly great life. To become all you can possibly become, you must use everything you have - your feelings - your intuition - your intelligence and your will power. - your whole self. If you do - the payoff is enormous. No one else can live that life for you. only your self image can give you that capacity. It can give you a sense of certainty as you live and if you see yourself as eable. if the picture of yourself is satisfying, you will live with a marvelous from of certainty. There will always be adversity and self doubts, and the greatest test is how you RALLY to your own aid. Will you life yourself up or put yourself down? Will you say ‘I couldn’t help myself when really. ’I didn't help myself.' Will you take the responsibilty for your own life and also take the consequences that goes with it? You will survive misfortune and uncertainty with that proper image which is the powerhouse within you that enables you to stand up under distress. We actually live in an economy of emotional abundance. There is more than enough to go around. Developing our human resources doesn't use them up, it only enlarges our possibilities. Life will hold many surprises, and not all are pleasant, but those who address the frustrations and the dangers on the positive and useful side will live creatively and successfully, because they have set their goals and know what direction they are going. Living is a series of goals, and the question is, do you achieve them, or will the demands of life be too harsh and any effort not be worthwhile? You know such people and so do I To me. they are failures in their own right, simply because they have not utilized their full potential, which I feel is a duty and an obligation. We cannot live and just let life pass by, but must make some contribution in some way for the betterment of ourselves and our fellow man. We must maintain a warm and vital interest in others and we can enrich our own lives by an honest and sincere approach towards the feelings and needs of those around us. We can belong to whatever community in which we st and yet retain our own identity by becoming our best ves, to live purposely, usefully and with pride. When you relate well to people, you’re on the road to success, but you must have the courage to do • the courage to seek and face the unknown. Because there are no sure things in life, and no matter how well laid your plans, you can never forsee the future with absolute certainty. Only when you have the courage to take action, then your goals in life become reality. Don't be afraid of growing up. which is basically a reaching out to new ways of handling experience. Some think adulthood is a door that only opens out. and once they step thru it. they can never return. Not so - There is maturity in the youngest and a child in all of us. Growth means having the courage and confidence to try new things and in the process, to let go of the old ones. But you move on because it’s more interesting and exciting to take on new challenges. There will always be problems, but that is good. If there were no problems to solve and difficulties to overcome, there would be no challenges and without challenges, there are no opportunities. When Fate closes one door. Faith opens another and you can walk quietly thru that open door to personal victories and joyous triumphs. Have confidence, but not arr gance • consideration, but not false humility and you will then have security. If we can all learn to really care for ourselves and others, we will find ourselves richer than we ever imagined. We will still be 'beset' by real problems and suffer real defeats because life is not a picnic nor a rose garden. The world is not run for our benefit. There is no escaping the human conditions, which involves pain and difficulty and loss. But we suffer only to a point, then no more. W'e can endure just so much, whether it is pain or grief, then we stop and return to the reality of living. W?e can bring everything we have to bear on the challenges life presents and make the very most of what it offers us. If we learn where our real resources lie. a whole world is waiting to be explored, and you now have the key to that world. 76 Cettermans Club Back Row: Mr. Frank, Mr. Ray, Mr. Hagstrom, Mr. Gildroy. Not Pictured Jimmi Linn Campbell Sec-Treas. jC i b r a r i a H s 77 1981 (Junior-Senior Prom Banquet Speech 'Delivered By State Kepresentative Qay Holliday I will begin with the verse - I HAVE NO YESTERDAYS, TIME TOOK THEM AWAY - TOMORROW MAY NOT BE, BUT I HAVE TODAY. I need not tell you that each of you has the potential of fulfilling every wish you might have, no r how ordinary that wish may be or how unrealistic it may appear. You already know that. But I will tell you that if you advance confidently in the direction of your dreams, and you endeavor to live the life that you have imagined, then you will meet with success. Your dreams of today aren’t what you determined in junior high, and your dreams of tomorrow as young adults will differ from those of today. You will find that your priorities change as you continue to grow in knowledge to achieve your goals. But always remember to move your life towards greater expectations - and perhaps, most important of all, to know the feeling of personal satisfaction which comes with setting new goals and having them come true. Be aware of the possibilities and alternatives available in your life, and understand your own uniqueness, at the same time, appreciate the difference in others. For some, the wishes include personal growth, creative expression, sharing and a ng relationship; for others, prestige, money, position and power. The reason some never achieve any of it is because they have never actually defined what direction their life should take nor even seriously considered their wishes as believeable or achievable. You must make that determination and then you take the credit for creating and making your own place in this world. But remember, you must also take the blame for a life that is useless. You are in the drivers seat in your own life, and in many respects, you have exerted control since you were born and cried for milk and a dry diaper. You alone hold the key, and it may rain on a few parades, but it won’t rain on all of them. You might wish to go to the moon, but you won’t make it to the launching pad without the determination, desire, the effort and the self discipline necessary to accomplish your objectives. Sure, there will be bends in road and a few sharp curves - there may even be a detour or two, but around the next bend, you will find another dream come true, and along that road, keep in mind to leave the world a little better place and always look for the best in others while giving the best of yourself. You know that your omplishments are judged not so much by the position you have reached in life, but by the obstacles you have overcome to get there. Just remember - to bear up under loss and to fight the bitterness of defeat and the weakness of grief - to be victorious over anger and to smile when tears are close. To hate hate and to love love, and to go on when it would seem good to die, and to always look upward for faith for thing ever more about to be. Events may change your direction and expand your demension, but thru it all, seek happiness and the capacity to feel deeply, to enjoy fully, to think freely, but mostly, to be needed. You may compromise to achieve harmony, but be satisfied in doing so. You may have to compromise yourself, but never compro- mise your ideals. Don’t measure your success by riches and fame, but rather by the t that you made your life worthwhile, and that is when you will have found the place where dreams come true. But really it is not. Any number of things could happen at an annual staff meeting. Because you see, we're all a little CRAZYllilllliiZ112 UfM, you're upside down Zhe History Of Zlte Class Of 1981!!! We, the class of nineteen hundred eighty-one, have shared some happy and some sad moments throughout our 12 years together. Some of these have been recorded in a brief, but treasured history. Early one September morning in 1969, 43 bright-eyed, shiny faces rose to meet their first day of school. Mrs. Burt scolded and Mrs. Fink pampered us through that first trying year. To start the year off, Diane Runestad fell off the ey bars and cracked her head open, but Lorrie Schwab found a better way to get out of school. She swallowed a nickel in order to make herself sick. It certainly worked; she was gone for three days. Later that spring, Frances Tully, Tina Butterfield, and Lorenze Alt made their singing debut singing School Days in three different keys. Second grade brought more laughter, but even more fighting. Virgil McHenry was happy beating everybody up who wouldn’t be his friend, but Dorothy Reaves and Melody McCamey were content fighting over Stu Sanner. Third grade found us outside witnessing the playground marriage of Dawn McSweyn and Deb Greeno. Darla Richardson and Ross Oveson joined us from California that year and Ross soon declared his love for Pam Wall and refused to let anyone else even look at her. Ron Armstrong starred in Mrs. Beadle’s big puppeteer production as the Royal King in The Princess Who Wouldn’t Eat. Joe Gilreath was our favorite heartthrob that year, but he chose Dawn McSweyn because she was in his reading group. In fifth grade, we enjoyed ourselves by rolling checkers back and forth in the Pod. Some of those checkers accidentally rolled clear down to the office where they came to rest under Mrs. Reynold’s desk. Alana Churchill was nicknamed Sacajawea because of her hair and Sondra Sibley joined us from Cliton, Illinois. Sheryl Anderson played Cinderella in Dramateers that year, and sang so shakily she finally started crying. Sixth grade found the girls standing by the fence watching the junior high boys go to lunch. Bob Breeding and Kyra Bennett made a startling discovery when they joined our class from Meeteetse, Wyoming, without ing about the other. Bob went on to set a record for getting sent to the office more times than anyone else for fighting. Penny Steffans chipped her tooth at recess, but was still required to blow ink through a straw for art class that day. Stu Sanner, as MacBeth, proclaimed his love for Jill Trouth as Lady MacBeth, and killed Greg Salveson, as King Duncan. Stu was then killed by Ross Oveson as MacDuff and Frank Weigum as Malcolm with a very sharp rubber dagger. This was the year that Brian Arthur got angry at Mr. Berglund’s reading assignment, so he gave him the signal; this signal was not a mouthwash. Finally it was up the big hill to junior high. Denise Turley joined us from Musselshell complete with coat hanger to count dandelions for a science teacher who warmed his chili up at noon on a bunson burner, and never recalled giving anyone permission to talk. In Math Class, our substitute. Mrs. Hughes, got so frustrated with us, she called on Mr. Erdie, who managed to deal with us by taking away all of our dances for the rest of the year. In eighth grade, Mr. Racki’s sub, who just happened to be Mr. Erdie, forgot to come to class, so we gave the room new wallpaper, also called spit wads. Kyra Bennet was hospitalized that year and missed more than fifteen days legally. We soon graduated, with a celebration dance in the gym. Rather than be picked up by parents, we just met our dates at the door. It was romantic at the time. Now, we were in high school. The girls were criticized by upperclasswomen for dating all the junior and senior boys. Dale Southworth joined us from California and was renamed Hands by the girls. Doug Mercer began commuting from Lavina to play football, and Jewel Liebig moved here from Lavina later that year. Our Homecoming float and Bedsheet poster both won second place that year. Joe Gilreath and Mark Bougardy got caught chewing after weightlifting one night and got some free time out of school. Sheryl Anderson, Tina Butterfield, and Lorrie Schwab were dressed as flowers, and Bart Meged, Stu Sanner, and Greg Salveson were dressed as bees to be punchkins at the junior prom that year. Pam Wall also made girls’ varsity basketball that year. During our sophomore year, Russ Evans ran 500 miles and received an award for it. Dorothea Newton got kicked out of English class for reading the Panther Parade inst the substitute’s wishes, but Ken Winkler got her through it by stealing her heart. Mark and Chris Yates became the owners of a ’56 Chevy that year. Our junior year was a busy one. The Zeimet twins, Carol, and Cheryl, joined us from Iowa. Dee Dee Kern and Bart Meged were crowned Snowball King and Queen and Chris Linder and Bob Breeding were crowned Prom King and Queen with “Once Upon a Time” as our theme. Traci Pertile, thea Newton, and Sheryl Anderson were kicked off Varsity Cheerleading during football, but after getting back on for basketball, almost lost their fourth comrade, Tina Butterfield, during Christmas vacation. Known then on as Bad Girls, they II managed to cheer the boys on to Roundup’s first State Class B Football Championship and a fourth place finish at the Divisional Basketball Tourney. Traci, Tina, and Dawn went into National Honor Society, while Larry Harshman was elected as the next year’s FFA President. Deb Barta tried outrunning the cops one night, but failed, much to everyone’s dismay. Teri ey still teases her by saying it was Deb’s job. Our bedsheet also won first place that year. And so we were seniors. Sheryl Anderson was Homecoming Queen and Stu Sanner and Mike Mills were our football co-captains who led us to a second place conference finish. Steve Goffena wrecked his car and spent a few days in the hospital. DeeDee Kern cheered for girl’s basketball and Dawn McSweyn was our Student Body President. Frances Tully and Julie Evans were initiated into National Honor Society and Frances completed her third year with the All-State Choir and also sang with the All-Northwest Choir. Our bedsheet swept to another first place finish and our basketball team to a third place finish. Teresa Hanson was Mr. Toombs’ slave, and Mr. Gildroy set an all-time record for catching seniors cheat on English tests. The Journalism class experienced ups and downs and lost three seniors for five days due to a small drinking problem. To end the year, Kyra Bennett was crowned May Queen. No matter where we go after we leave these halls, we will always feel very special towards our classmates, simply because we shared such big, important years with each other. These memories will be instilled upon our memories forever and will grow more precious as the years go by. It has been fun, exciting, sad and happy. Editing this yearbook is one experience that I shall never forget. There has been a lot of hard work put into this annual. We raised money doing the concessions for the rodeo and spent many endless weekends working concessions. This was done to have our annual listed. When it came deadline time, the tears were shed; there were never enough pages done to meet the deadlines. As the school year dwindled down to almost nothing, so did my staff — it’s hard to believe I had such a large and excited staff at the beginning of the year. After that first deadline, all that excitement was gone. My photographers worked very hard this year, especially the head photographer, Winston Brillhart. My books were kept in good order by Trish Skagen and 1 would like to thank these people from the bottom of my heart. If it was not for Mrs. Brower, I think I would have gone insane. She helped me so much and I will never be able to repay her for all that she has done for me. In the end, I’m sure everyone will enjoy this final product. I hope they will even though they will never know the hard work and long hours put into it. Best wishes to Deanna Turley, my Assistant Editor and Good Luck for next year.
