Text from Pages 1 - 80 of the 1960 volume:

FOREWORD Nine o'clock! The raucous bells and buzzers shake the slumbering school building awake. Empty halls miraculously fill with hurrying, swarming students. Lockers bang as books, paper, and pencils are grabbed. Off to class! Four o’clock! But the day's not through. There is always Pep Club, play practice, Panther Parade, a basketball game, or a music concert. Whew! Tired students, ready at last to go home, filter out of the halls and through the exits. The doors are closed; each locker is shut. The halls - swept spotless by the janitors - fall silent. Not a single footstep or shout or laugh. The school rests. Mickey Mursener Wilbur Wood Susan Polich Cathy Johnson Sharon Lind Advisor: Mrs. C. Williams DEDICATION Mr. Baum has been superin- tendent of Roundup Schools from 1950 to 1960. Because he, too, is leaving at the end of the year, we seniors feel that he belongs to our class in a very special way. In dedicating this Rodeo to him, we are saying a thousand forgotten thank you's stretching over the past ten years - thank you’s for the many things that he has done with and for us; his sin- cere interest in our work, and in our plans for the future. So be- fore we leave, and before he leaves, we want to say this one last thank you - and goodby. Whenever we think of the office, we think of Mrs. Stortz as well as Mr. Baum. She has been his secretary and helper for the past ten years. 4 School Board Mr. Baum and Paulette Voting on Amendments 5 Student Council Mr. Stoner, Mr. Newton and Mr. Eliasson run the three school buses. Have you ever seen town kids watch with envy as the buses roll in and out? Think of the odds and ends of jobs Mr. Starkweather and Mr. Carlson help us with in addition to doing their routine janitor work. The tall but green Roundup Panthers experienced their first non-winning basketball season under Coach Fred Rooley in his nine years here. The young team - with Gary Ray and Mick Pertile the only seniors - started slowly but came on fast toward the end of the season to post an 11-11 won-lost mark. One thing characterized the '59-'60 Panthers; they always put up a good fight. Inexperience again showed in the Southern Division Class B Tourna- ment in Billings, when R. H. S. failed to place for the first time in eight years. Vranish goes up for two 54 Kowalski blocks a shot ACTIVITIES . . . DAY ' f . . . AND NIGHT The Cool Thinker HOMECOMING Highlights of the an- nual festivities in- cluded a parade, a game, and a dance with the crowning of the queen. Queen candidates were Sandy Hamley, Lorrie Ross, Janice Wilhelmi, and Pat Kelly. Pat was crowned by co-captains Jack Pratt and Gary Ray at the dance the night after the Lodge Grass game. HARVEST BALL Autumn leaves, pumpkins, and turkeys the theme of the Harvest Ball. HOME EC STYLE SHOW Pandemonium! Choralaires Clarinet quartet Chorus THE MOUSETRAP” by Agatha Christie Three Blind Mice was the signa- ture tune of the killer in Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap, the senior play directed by Mr. DeBourg. Characters were: Giles and Molly Ralston (Jack Pratt and Connie Jens); Mrs. Boyll (Paulette Blanchi); Major Metcalf (Harold Hubble); Chris Wren (Alan Fisher); Miss Casewell (Bonnie Ratkovich); Mr. Paravincini (Barry Bianchi); and the homicidal maniac Trotter who almost completes a triple murder (Wilbur Wood). 61 FOURTH ANNUAL SCIENCE FAIR E CHICK «i «men in nun tiriinii ciimriM II «is. Betty Kiner won first in Zoology. Connie and Cathy prepare posters for the fair. Bob Balich won first in Geology. Sawhorses, two-by-fours, and extension cords - not to mention hours of work on posters and experi- ments - are unlikely, but necessary, ingredients for a science fair. Weeks of preparation were climaxed by the opening of the fair to the public on March 18, when an esti- mated 1000 people viewed 116 projects. BILLINGS SCIENCE FAIR Earl Alt carefully explains the principles of his model farm to the Midland Empire judges. With a tinkle of glass and a few bumps and bangs, the last of the projects board the bus for Billings. Mr. Baum, Mr. McIntyre, Mr. Stoner, and the students get a chance to catch their breath and get their picture taken before leaving for Billings. Cathy Johnson, Roundup's first- place winner in Mathematics, displays her project. SCHOOL SPIRIT Sharon Lacey and Carol Kozeliskl were awarded season tournament tickets for best song and best poster. Cathy Johnson was the winner of the annual School Spirit essay contest. Betty Kiner wore a look of stunned happi- ness as she was proclaimed the person best exemplifying School Spirit. 64 Enthusiasts sign victory poster FROM THE BEAT’’ TO THE BARN” and YlinnatS R emary and Wall PROM IN THE MAKING Even the boys got stuck with the needle job. Hand me that tape, and don't shake the ladder I Not beaniks - just juniors painting flames. Are my seams straight? Yards of multi-colored sky, pounds of dry ice, cartons of tin foil, and spray cans of paint are just a few of the ingredients of The Inferno. Committees for murals, punch stand, and bandstand plus a week of hard work went into the making of this year’s Junior Prom. FINISHED First to arrive - Let’s find a table and fill our programs. Queen Pat Kelly was crowned by Sandy Zickovich and Sandy Geiger. Under the gaze of Dante's murals and a grinning devil, the upperclassmen of R. H. S. descended into Hell under the direction of a shrieking devil. After eight hours, which included a pre-prom banquet, dancing to the music of The Rebels, and an after- prom show, everyone agreed - they had a heavenly time. Near the Pit of Hades - smoke gets in your eyes. Last to leave - Beyond the doors, the evening has just begun. Janice Wilhelmi was crowned Queen of the May by Oral Newton and Merryellen Smith. The two other members of the court were Bonnie Ratkovich and Connie Jens. MAY DAY Spring! . . . and to celebrate its arrival, the students of R. H. S. elected a Queen of the May who, along with her attendants, presided over a scholastic and extra curricu- lar awards program. Other high- lights were performances by various high school groups all of which paid tribute to the Queen. The twirlers ended their routine with a snappy salute.
