When we first started the season we were losing matches, but not being skunked. However, we hung in there and started winning games and fought to the end. Outstanding players such as John Wat- son, freshman, who placed in the semifinals in district, and Tom Dooley, sophomore, who placed lst in the J.V. competition at the Georgetown tourney, paved the way for a winning season. According to Coach Dixon, the team did an excellent job considering that most of the tennis players went to Westwood after the split. CS Osfi Gymn Nl UD Gymnasts compete at state meet Winning all of their regular meets for the second year in a row, as well as bringing home three trophies, is enough to be proud of, yet the Round Rock Varsity Gymnastics Team did not stop there. In fact, these ladies went all the way to the top as they were the only team from Round Rock High School to compete as a team at the State level. The season's highlight was qualifying for the State Gymnastics Meet. The team had a good amount of talent, but according to Coach Brandy Haney, many hours of hard work was responsible for the successful season. The excitement at the state meet caused the girls to drop their team score eight points. Haney described the girls as very com- petitive yet very close. They competed as a team also against each other. After winning . Varsity Gymnasts are: lfront row, l to rl Cherie Wilson, Shanna Perry, Jennifer Barbini, Diane Flynn, lback rowl Karen Richey fmgrl, Brettne Taylor, Cindy Mickey, and Coach Brandy Haney. f M .L the district meet, the team had a month to prepare for regional competition. In this month they needed closeness and security, so they encouraged each other and wanted to be with each other. Spring break was spent practicing, and many hours were spent working out after school. Haney commented, It was scary. We knew we had talent. Regionals came and Round Rock swept the honors. We really developed this year. The girls taught me a lot. They learned that if you really work hard, it will pay off. It is not easy, Haney concluded. Jennifer Barbini, Diane Flynn, Brettne Taylor, and Cherie Wilson will return to represent Round Rock next season. At the Regional Meet, Jennifer Barbini, junior, prac- tices her floor routine before the actual competition. .F-J as i Concentration is needed to perform difficult tricks on the balance beam.
