Dragon spirit built in young varsity team How to build a basketball team: Take one head coach with actual ball playing experience. Add an assistant coach who is a personal friend and former college teammate of the head basketball coach. Carefully place wisdom and advice over nine athletes who are not only hard workers, but good students and citizens. Add the sup- port of the parents and the students. Cover with spirit and enthusiasm and a well balanced Round Rock Dragon basketball team is complete. Coach Steve Doering built the 1981-82 basketball team from scratch since there were no returning varsity players. Taking former Junior Varsity players, a freshman player, and a few new faces to Round Rock's Court, Doering led the Rock through a competitive district and finished with a season record of 14-19. We ended up much better than anyone ever expected, stated Doering. Looking back over the season, Lance Thames, senior, commented, the season was a lot of fun. Coach Doering was a good coach. He taught me everything I know. We all tried hard and we did the best we could. For the first time in Round Rock's basket ball history, the guys' team and the girls' team supported each other all during the season. Girl's varsity basketball player Kim Gaddy stated, it's hard to keep going when there is no one in the stand yelling and en- couraging you. We wanted the guys to feel as comfortable and as confident as if th were on their own court, so we would traw along to give them that support. Working with good athletes, go students - just a good bunch of guys mak coaching much easier and much more c- joyable, added Doering. ll ba Basket 0 J.V ' 1 -5 +06 r xl!- W, N gf tr Scores do not reflect JV story Coach Russell Seigler and Head Basketball Coach Steve Doering played basketball together at Southwestern University. They put their talents together to develop a strong basketball program for Round Rock. Under the direction of Coach Seigler, the junior varsity team learned strategies and gained experience. Even though the junior varsity's records of 8- 20 lseasonl, and 2-16 ldistrictl, were not necessarily impressive, there were several highlights in the year. The JV team brought home a second place trophy from the Lago Vista Varsity Tournament. In another varsity tournament, which included three state ranked varsity teams, Round Rock's JV won the consolation prize. , , Coach Seigler added that the biggest highlight of district play was the Rock's victory over Waco University in a tight game ending 34-32. Junior basketball player, John Beer, commented, The record reads that we lost more than we won, but I feel that we won more because of the team effort that was put forth.
