Watching young athletes develop the basic skills during a year is exciting for a coach, but the coaches of the freshman girls basketball team saw more than just skills be- ing developed. The girls were enthusiastic about learning new skills and strategies. One factor impressing Coaches Vicki Bates and Charlotte Montgomery was how girls handled their personal problems. They always left their personal problems off the court. This is very important for the girls to do. They worked well together on the court, commented Montgomery. The freshmen had a great deal of potential and showed definite improvement, she added. Coach Bates said the best part of the season was the fact that the girls kept work- ing to improve and be better players. The high point of the season was when the A team beat the undefeated Temple in the second half of district, added Bates. Freshman Cindy Muller stated, I enjoyed the season and I liked the coaches. We were a well-coached team and ended the season successfully. Agreeing with Mueller, Heather Smith, freshman, said, I'm looking forward to next year. I hope it will be as good or better than this year. 210 . '- , tillil ., ..., Concentration is seen on the face of freshman Cindy Mueller as she reaches for the tip-off. J. V. Basketball Photo by Scott Click. Inexperience takes toll on JV' ers A season of learning about the game by improving dribbling, shooting, passing, re- bounding, and defensive moves was the 1981-82 season for the junior varsity basket- ball team. Coach Jeanne Cleckler worked with the athletes to develop and prepare them for varsity play. Commenting about the season, Cleckler included the fact that the season was ex- citing and many team members showed much improvement as the year progressed. At the beginning of the season, the team's total game scores barely broke into double figures. But with players like Phyllis Lazo and Julie Wiley, both were scoring in the double figures consistently by mid-season. The sure-handed sophomore Angie Inman was able to dribble the ball through the most treacherous full court presses as well as make impressive steals. I was proud of these ladies and enjoyed working with them. They showed much desire, a lot of hustle, and tenacity throughout the season, said Cleckler. Junior Connie Cooper added, Although we had an inexperienced team, I feel our coach has brought us to work closer together. Our season wins weren't many, but we did bring home two trophies. The 5-21 season record does not ex- emplify what was learned by the inex- perienced young ladies, added Cleckler. Tough pre-season practice teaches players like Mary Tumbusch, sophomore, proper defensive techniques. The 1981--82 Junior Varsity basketball team is: Angie Inman, DeAnna Dennis, Mary Tumbusch, Charlotte Staton, Connie Cooper, Julie Wiley, Phyllis Lazo, Kalpana Vrudhula, Tina Hacker, Cindy Clackley, Kiana Fallah, Carol Gaitan, and Norma Alvarado. as , 5. 5 Y gi wie 35 Y Ti i Z Em- E i 5 5 'iff 31 K ui' un! Dragon spirit built in young varsity team How to build a basketball team: Take one head coach with actual ball playing experience. Add an assistant coach who is a personal friend and former college teammate of the head basketball coach. Carefully place wisdom and advice over nine athletes who are not only hard workers, but good students and citizens. Add the sup- port of the parents and the students. Cover with spirit and enthusiasm and a well balanced Round Rock Dragon basketball team is complete. Coach Steve Doering built the 1981-82 basketball team from scratch since there were no returning varsity players. Taking former Junior Varsity players, a freshman player, and a few new faces to Round Rock's Court, Doering led the Rock through a competitive district and finished with a season record of 14-19. We ended up much better than anyone ever expected, stated Doering. Looking back over the season, Lance Thames, senior, commented, the season was a lot of fun. Coach Doering was a good coach. He taught me everything I know. We all tried hard and we did the best we could. For the first time in Round Rock's basket ball history, the guys' team and the girls' team supported each other all during the season. Girl's varsity basketball player Kim Gaddy stated, it's hard to keep going when there is no one in the stand yelling and en- couraging you. We wanted the guys to feel as comfortable and as confident as if th were on their own court, so we would traw along to give them that support. Working with good athletes, go students - just a good bunch of guys mak coaching much easier and much more c- joyable, added Doering.
