Inexperience takes toll on JV' ers A season of learning about the game by improving dribbling, shooting, passing, re- bounding, and defensive moves was the 1981-82 season for the junior varsity basket- ball team. Coach Jeanne Cleckler worked with the athletes to develop and prepare them for varsity play. Commenting about the season, Cleckler included the fact that the season was ex- citing and many team members showed much improvement as the year progressed. At the beginning of the season, the team's total game scores barely broke into double figures. But with players like Phyllis Lazo and Julie Wiley, both were scoring in the double figures consistently by mid-season. The sure-handed sophomore Angie Inman was able to dribble the ball through the most treacherous full court presses as well as make impressive steals. I was proud of these ladies and enjoyed working with them. They showed much desire, a lot of hustle, and tenacity throughout the season, said Cleckler. Junior Connie Cooper added, Although we had an inexperienced team, I feel our coach has brought us to work closer together. Our season wins weren't many, but we did bring home two trophies. The 5-21 season record does not ex- emplify what was learned by the inex- perienced young ladies, added Cleckler. Tough pre-season practice teaches players like Mary Tumbusch, sophomore, proper defensive techniques. f 'W asses.-Sasser-f-assi Freshman Girls Opponent Bryan Waco Richfield Waco University Temple Ellison Copperas Cove Killeen Westwood Bryan Waco Richfield Waco University Temple Ellison Copperas Cove Killeen Westwood Uvertime helps fish get to top Lunches for the freshman girls were cut short so that they could practice basketball more, and all their practice paid off with the A team finishing with an 11-3 district record and the B team, composed of first- year basketball players, setting a 4-6 record. Watching young athletes develop the basic skills during a year is exciting for a coach, but the coaches of the freshman girls basketball team saw more than just skills be- ing developed. The girls were enthusiastic about learning new skills and strategies. One factor impressing Coaches Vicki Bates and Charlotte Montgomery was how girls handled their personal problems. They always left their personal problems off the court. This is very important for the girls to do. They worked well together on the court, commented Montgomery. The freshmen had a great deal of potential and showed definite improvement, she added. Coach Bates said the best part of the season was the fact that the girls kept work- ing to improve and be better players. The high point of the season was when the A team beat the undefeated Temple in the second half of district, added Bates. Freshman Cindy Muller stated, I enjoyed the season and I liked the coaches. We were a well-coached team and ended the season successfully. Agreeing with Mueller, Heather Smith, freshman, said, I'm looking forward to next year.
