Basketball Crowd inspires Lady Dragons 'fls that not a basketball? 'lYes that is a basketball! The home crowd exploded into their favorite cheer, led by the Varsity Boys Basketball Team, who made it a habit to at- tend all the girls' games. From the burst of confetti at the tipoff of the first game to the cheers at the final buzzer of the season, the crowd for the Lady Dragons was more in- spired and enthusiastic than ever before in Round Rock basketball history. The team held an impressive home court winning streak as they defeated every district team that entered the girls gym. With the exception of the district champions, Killeen, Round Rock defeated every team in District 15 AAAAA at least once. Not in- cluding Ava Mercer, DeAnna Wernli, De Lynn Beebe, and Janet Houston, the varsity team was composed of the 1980-81 Junior Varsity team. Former JV coach Linda Wag- goner moved up to the head coach position to lead the team to third place in the Round Rock Tournament and also third position in the final district standings as the girls had a 15-12 season record. All-District honors went to senior Ava Mercer and sophomore Karen Kramer. Mercer averaged 14 points per game and was listed as first-team all-district. Kramer, who stood at 6'1 , was given honorable mention from the district's coaches. As a whole, the Lady Dragons were a very tall team. Only three of the twelve members stood under 5'9 . Coach Wag- goner used this advantage to run an offense which would allow the inside height to score. Completing her first year coaching at var- sity level, Coach Waggoner stated that she was pleased with the team and with how the team improved in the second half of the season. Senior Lee Ann Groves commented about the year, I thought we were well coached and well prepared to face any op- ponent at anytimef' 64 The 1981-82 Lady Dragon Basketball team members are: ifront fowl Andrea Beebe, DeAnna Wernli, Lee Ann Groves, Nancy Browne, Kim Gaddy, DeLynn Beebe, and Bridget Dee, lthird rowl Jacki Lunsford, Ava Mercer, Janet Houston, Karen Kramer, Janet Gray, Lesa Hedrick, and Moira Curtis. J. V. Basketball Photo by Scott Click. Inexperience takes toll on JV' ers A season of learning about the game by improving dribbling, shooting, passing, re- bounding, and defensive moves was the 1981-82 season for the junior varsity basket- ball team. Coach Jeanne Cleckler worked with the athletes to develop and prepare them for varsity play. Commenting about the season, Cleckler included the fact that the season was ex- citing and many team members showed much improvement as the year progressed. At the beginning of the season, the team's total game scores barely broke into double figures. But with players like Phyllis Lazo and Julie Wiley, both were scoring in the double figures consistently by mid-season. The sure-handed sophomore Angie Inman was able to dribble the ball through the most treacherous full court presses as well as make impressive steals. I was proud of these ladies and enjoyed working with them. They showed much desire, a lot of hustle, and tenacity throughout the season, said Cleckler. Junior Connie Cooper added, Although we had an inexperienced team, I feel our coach has brought us to work closer together. Our season wins weren't many, but we did bring home two trophies. The 5-21 season record does not ex- emplify what was learned by the inex- perienced young ladies, added Cleckler. Tough pre-season practice teaches players like Mary Tumbusch, sophomore, proper defensive techniques. The 1981--82 Junior Varsity basketball team is: Angie Inman, DeAnna Dennis, Mary Tumbusch, Charlotte Staton, Connie Cooper, Julie Wiley, Phyllis Lazo, Kalpana Vrudhula, Tina Hacker, Cindy Clackley, Kiana Fallah, Carol Gaitan, and Norma Alvarado. as , 5. 5 Y gi wie 35 Y Ti i Z Em- E i 5 5 'iff 31 K ui' un!
