Cross country cruises through season -1- t'Young and inexperiencednz That's the way Coach Andy Moldenhauer described Round Rockls cross country teams in 1981. The team split into a varsity boys squad and a freshman boys squad while the girls and junior varsity boys entered meets individually. Last year's boys varsity competed on a state level, but the school split spoiled the Dragons' chances for a repeat performance. Injurges also added to Round Rock's uphill battle. Despite adversity, the Dragons still per- formed well, both as a team and in individual performances. In the 15-AAAAA district meet, the varsity Dragons finished fifth overall, with senior Bernie Sill crossing the finish line in second place. In the varsity girls' division, senior Nancy Mahoney finished in 8th place, and with Debbie Bond following in 16th place, Junior varsity ended with Tamara Milian in 3rd place and Jen- nifer Kriegel with 6th place. Meanwhile, with the talent of Dennis Will, John Castillo, Mark Reyes, and Brett T dale, the freshman boys won their division. Both the varsity's performance tl season, and the upcoming freshman teai prompted Moldenhauer to be optimis about future Dragon cross country teams. This year, we had a young team. But a few years, we are going to have a solid a experienced team. Freshman Dennis Witt completes another success race. .QQ 0 me 1 1 ' 1 1- c ars, 'f . .. .. 5 ,5 V,g. 5 .. Basketball Crowd inspires Lady Dragons 'fls that not a basketball? 'lYes that is a basketball! The home crowd exploded into their favorite cheer, led by the Varsity Boys Basketball Team, who made it a habit to at- tend all the girls' games. From the burst of confetti at the tipoff of the first game to the cheers at the final buzzer of the season, the crowd for the Lady Dragons was more in- spired and enthusiastic than ever before in Round Rock basketball history. The team held an impressive home court winning streak as they defeated every district team that entered the girls gym. With the exception of the district champions, Killeen, Round Rock defeated every team in District 15 AAAAA at least once. Not in- cluding Ava Mercer, DeAnna Wernli, De Lynn Beebe, and Janet Houston, the varsity team was composed of the 1980-81 Junior Varsity team. Former JV coach Linda Wag- goner moved up to the head coach position to lead the team to third place in the Round Rock Tournament and also third position in the final district standings as the girls had a 15-12 season record. All-District honors went to senior Ava Mercer and sophomore Karen Kramer. Mercer averaged 14 points per game and was listed as first-team all-district. Kramer, who stood at 6'1 , was given honorable mention from the district's coaches. As a whole, the Lady Dragons were a very tall team. Only three of the twelve members stood under 5'9 . Coach Wag- goner used this advantage to run an offense which would allow the inside height to score. Completing her first year coaching at var- sity level, Coach Waggoner stated that she was pleased with the team and with how the team improved in the second half of the season. Senior Lee Ann Groves commented about the year, I thought we were well coached and well prepared to face any op- ponent at anytimef' 64 The 1981-82 Lady Dragon Basketball team members are: ifront fowl Andrea Beebe, DeAnna Wernli, Lee Ann Groves, Nancy Browne, Kim Gaddy, DeLynn Beebe, and Bridget Dee, lthird rowl Jacki Lunsford, Ava Mercer, Janet Houston, Karen Kramer, Janet Gray, Lesa Hedrick, and Moira Curtis.
