Cross country cruises through season -1- t'Young and inexperiencednz That's the way Coach Andy Moldenhauer described Round Rockls cross country teams in 1981. The team split into a varsity boys squad and a freshman boys squad while the girls and junior varsity boys entered meets individually. Last year's boys varsity competed on a state level, but the school split spoiled the Dragons' chances for a repeat performance. Injurges also added to Round Rock's uphill battle. Despite adversity, the Dragons still per- formed well, both as a team and in individual performances. In the 15-AAAAA district meet, the varsity Dragons finished fifth overall, with senior Bernie Sill crossing the finish line in second place. In the varsity girls' division, senior Nancy Mahoney finished in 8th place, and with Debbie Bond following in 16th place, Junior varsity ended with Tamara Milian in 3rd place and Jen- nifer Kriegel with 6th place. Meanwhile, with the talent of Dennis Will, John Castillo, Mark Reyes, and Brett T dale, the freshman boys won their division. Both the varsity's performance tl season, and the upcoming freshman teai prompted Moldenhauer to be optimis about future Dragon cross country teams. This year, we had a young team. But a few years, we are going to have a solid a experienced team. Freshman Dennis Witt completes another success race. .QQ 0 me 1 1 ' 1 1- c ars, 'f . .. .. 5 ,5 V,g. 5 .. But it's nice to win, too, and Round Rockls freshman volleyballers were able to have the best of both worlds in the '81 season. Concentrating on developing serving, setting, and spiking skills as well as teaching offensive and defensive formations, coaches Linda Waggoner and Charlotte lVlontgomery's efforts paid off in a suc- cessful season. Two teams were suited up due to abundant interest. The A team ended the year with a 17-3 record and 13-1 district mark, while the HBH team went 4-6 in district play. The two-team concept also allowed each girl to play more often, helping instill the carefully-taught fundamentals. Observers are almost unanimous in agreeing Round Rock's volleyball future looks bright. The 1981 Freshman Lady Dragons include: 1bottom, l-rl Melessa Perez, Robyn Hursch, Serita Childs, Karen Cannady, Christine Dominguez, Sonia Bernal, Monica Hernandez, Cindy Wymola, Bridgette Davis, Cherry Krienke, Olivia Zamarripa, Brends Stazak, Heather Smith, Cindy Boyd, Karen Neal, Debra Traber, and Deborah Roberson.
