JV volleyball team has miracle season -i To go 20-8 overall and win a first half district championship is always an achieve- ment, but to do it the way the Junior Varsity Lady Dragons did it may be even more of one. Head Coach Sandy Flora described her team as the least experienced kids in 100 miles in any direction. She added, We literally, scrounged a team out of the hallway. Most girls on a JV team have usual- ly played since seventh grade. But Flora remained confident, in- sisting the talent was there. Sure enough, the JV caught fire and blitz- ed seven straight opponents to power its way to a first half district championship and a tie for second place in the second half. The team also progressed on an individual level. Julie Wiley, Brenda Burse, and Kim Machalicek were the kids l counted most, according to Flora, and Miche Robertson was the most improved over t season stretch. Overall, the Ladies finish with a 12-2 district mark. Ava Mercer and Pam Campbell were given first- team all-district awards as Leslie Dean and Karen Kramer received second team recognition. Norene Charpiot and Janet Gray were given Honorable Mention by district coaches. Mercer was also awarded the team's Most Valuable Player award. Campbell was cited as the team's Best Offensive Player, and Dean the Best Defensive Player. Despite the disappointing finish, the Lady Dragons' 266 record overall ithree fewer losses than last year's district winning squadi was the best in the volleyball program's young history. Despite losing five seniors next fall, including Camp- bell, Charpiot, Dean, Mercer, and Lisa Rutherford, Pryor thinks next year's team could challenge that record. Oh, yeah, she says, we'll be back. But it's nice to win, too, and Round Rockls freshman volleyballers were able to have the best of both worlds in the '81 season. Concentrating on developing serving, setting, and spiking skills as well as teaching offensive and defensive formations, coaches Linda Waggoner and Charlotte lVlontgomery's efforts paid off in a suc- cessful season. Two teams were suited up due to abundant interest. The A team ended the year with a 17-3 record and 13-1 district mark, while the HBH team went 4-6 in district play. The two-team concept also allowed each girl to play more often, helping instill the carefully-taught fundamentals. Observers are almost unanimous in agreeing Round Rock's volleyball future looks bright. The 1981 Freshman Lady Dragons include: 1bottom, l-rl Melessa Perez, Robyn Hursch, Serita Childs, Karen Cannady, Christine Dominguez, Sonia Bernal, Monica Hernandez, Cindy Wymola, Bridgette Davis, Cherry Krienke, Olivia Zamarripa, Brends Stazak, Heather Smith, Cindy Boyd, Karen Neal, Debra Traber, and Deborah Roberson.
