Dragons rock district with successful season g Cynics snickered as Round Rock's varsity gridders entered the 1981 season. After all, the Dragons hadn't had a winning season since 1977 and had limped home the year before with a 3-7 record. So, who was this guy Terry Cron going around predicting, lo and behold, a winning season and a com- petitive team? But Cron, the Dragon's head coach, had the last laugh. Not only did his charges have Jerry Kadlubar f15l stretches to catch a pass. Kendall Crisp f5Ol and Joe Brown l84l charge upon an unexpecting Richfield Ram. Photo by Greg Cannady We M, st a winning season, going 5-4-1, but, more often than not, sent opponents into fits try' ing to shake the Dragons loose. In no less than four games, Round Rock lost in the final minutes of the game. A stout defense was the main reason for the Dragon's upsurge. Few teams found their ground game very productive, and those who tried to score via the pass found it downright dangerous. The season opener with Lanier, which saw Round Rock shuto' the Vikes 7-0 and contain their 5 everything running back Eric Cobble to 1 yards, set the tone. But under the stewardship of quarter- back Todd Williams, the receiver corps, led by Tony Pollacia, and run- ning backs Steve Staton and Dwayne Orr, the Dragons were able to put on an offensive show culminating in a 27- 7 defeat of Waco Richfield and a 300 season finale shutout of Westwood's Warriors. Round Rock's talent was reflected in the multitude of post-season honors given to players. Craig Huff and Todd Williams received first team all-district honors as well as an athletic scholar- ship at Abilene Christian University. Lynn Womble, Tony Pollacia, and Williams also received second-team honors. Honorable Mention citations went to Marc Barrett, Joe Brown, Kendall Crisp, Pollacia, and Vince Kalduba.
