Determination makes a winner Let me win, but if I cannot win, Let me be brave in the attempt. - Special Olympics motto Special Olympics is an athletic event where handicapped students participate in various sports. For the past five years, Round Rock High School students have par- ticipated in the Special Olympics in track and field, bowling, basketball, gymnastics, and soccer skills. Special Olympic events were bowling at Highland Lanes, and track and field events at Burger Center. Students stayed overnight at the University of Texas. After the big event and awards were handed out, a big dance was held. Special Olympic participants looked for- ward to competing in the events as much as a football player would look forward to a season. Preparing for the occasion as early as possible, Miss Carol Solis, their teacher and coach, said they try to practice twice a week for at least an hour. Special Olympics went through the same regulations that any other sport would go through as far as safety precautions by stretching and jogging before practice begins. Of course, like all athletics, students hated this part of the training, but they knew it had to be done if they wanted to accomplish their goal, to be a winner. Special Olympics helped the students ima prove their leisure time activities and boost their confidence. i Round Rock students who participated in the Special Olympics are: lfirst rowl Scott Engstrom, Terry Fowler, Gloria DeLaRosa, Miss Carol Solis, teacher, lsecond row! Billy Byars, area coordinator and Clifford Lowery. Helping out at the basketball Special Olympics is Sean Curtis, sophomore varsity player.
