al- 1 TH CENTENNIAL EM LEM SCHOOL HISTORY The history of the Rothsay School is very closely tied with the history of town. The first settlers came to this locality in the early seventies when a few business places were established in Tanberg township. A Mr. F. A. Fuller became prominent in the organization plans of the first school district. On September 5, 1880, School District Number ll was organized. In 1882 after a change had been made in the area of the district a school building large enough to accommodate 60 pupils was erected. With the first annual meeting held September 1, 1885, the following were elect- ed to serve on the school boards F. A. Fuller, O. G. Felland, and H. G. Venos. Of interest is the fact that this early in its history the district voted to hold .nine months of school and pay the teachers the huge sum of S500 for the year's work. When this school became too small a heavy curtain was hung down through the middle to allow for two rooms and two teachers. On April 7, 1905, the district was reorganized to become Inde- pendent School District of Rothsay. The board was enlarged to six members. This board saw the necessity of larger quarters and immedi- ately a bond issue was issued in the amount of 38000. H new building 46 by 62 feet was erected, part of which is still in use. The first eighth grade was graduated in 1904. Only three of the original four rooms were in use until 1910 when an extra teacher was hired to take care of the 9th and 10th grades. This arrangement continued until 1926 when the llth grade was added. The upper floor was remodeled to take care of the extra classes. This plan was followed until 1939 when the fourth year of high school was added and an additional teach- er hired. The iirst class graduated was in 1940 with twelve members in the class.
