Mrs. Rosholt has earnestly and graciously donated her time to help- ing us in our four years of high school. She has been our class sup- ervisor a.nd play director for two years. Ne the senior class of 1958 with thB.I1k'fL1lI18SS and sincerity, proudly and respectfully dedicate this, our armual of 1958. li I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I al- 1 TH CENTENNIAL EM LEM SCHOOL HISTORY The history of the Rothsay School is very closely tied with the history of town. The first settlers came to this locality in the early seventies when a few business places were established in Tanberg township. A Mr. F. A. Fuller became prominent in the organization plans of the first school district. On September 5, 1880, School District Number ll was organized. In 1882 after a change had been made in the area of the district a school building large enough to accommodate 60 pupils was erected. With the first annual meeting held September 1, 1885, the following were elect- ed to serve on the school boards F. A. Fuller, O. G. Felland, and H. G. Venos. Of interest is the fact that this early in its history the district voted to hold .nine months of school and pay the teachers the huge sum of S500 for the year's work. When this school became too small a heavy curtain was hung down through the middle to allow for two rooms and two teachers. On April 7, 1905, the district was reorganized to become Inde- pendent School District of Rothsay. The board was enlarged to six members. This board saw the necessity of larger quarters and immedi- ately a bond issue was issued in the amount of 38000. H new building 46 by 62 feet was erected, part of which is still in use. The first eighth grade was graduated in 1904. Only three of the original four rooms were in use until 1910 when an extra teacher was hired to take care of the 9th and 10th grades. This arrangement continued until 1926 when the llth grade was added. The upper floor was remodeled to take care of the extra classes. This plan was followed until 1939 when the fourth year of high school was added and an additional teach- er hired. The iirst class graduated was in 1940 with twelve members in the class. In the fall of 1937 plans' were laid for a new high school build- ing and bonds were sold to the extent of 3l6,500. With the aid of the W P A the building became a reality and was dedicated on Friday, June 28, 1940. The program for this day contained memorable names such as Pastors Salveson and Ulring, Supt. Hubert, and Dr. John G. Rockwell, then State Commissioner of Education Since the dedication several changes have been made in the school to meet the larger enrollment. To accommodate the increase the orig- inal large assembly room was divided to allow for two rooms. One of the high school class rooms has served for many years as an elementary grade room. The basement lunch room was converted into an office for the superintendent and the upper floor office was assigned to the high school principal. A hot lunch program was inaugurated under the superintendency of Mr. Henry Roscoe. This now requires the assistance of two workers. Under Supt. Stoffel the district was increased so with the greater numbers from the rural areas the bus service has also been enlarged to three busses. The Rothsay School has made a mark in athletics as was evidenced with the seeding of the team in the district in 1949. In 1951 the team was the runner-up in the sub-district tournament. This year, 57-58, saw another step forward in the education field with the first adult evening class meeting for a course in typing. Since the dedication the school has been very fortunate in having the following capable men at its helm: Henry Roscoe, Victor Ball, Henry Retslaff, Alex Stoffel, and at the present time, W. E. Hubert. The Centennial Year marks a milestone of great importance for the Rcthsay School. During this year's celebration the mortgage on the new district, 850 will be burned at appropriate ceremonies. Rothsay can feel justly proud of the attainment. THE BURNING OF THE MORTAGE Mr. R. S.
