July Audrey Harshbarger became president of the Home Economics College at the Pennsylvania State University. U.C.L.A. installed its new dean. Richard Miller took over his duties early this afternoon. August Ronald Yoder discovered an uranium mine. lt has proved to be the largest and purest source of this important element of our nation. Richard Kauffman, head of the North American Trucking Company, announced that his company signed a lifetime contract with Monsanto Chemicals for all of their hauling. Judy Reynolds received the Nobel Prize for her discovery of a cure for leukemia. Miss Reynolds is a lab technician for the Research Department of the DuPont Company. September For the third straight year, Vogue magazine has voted Kay Stewart Number One Fashion Model of the Year. Miss Stewart is the highest-paid model in the magazine's history. Mi ss Mary Ann Bratton was assigned the position of typist to the Secretary General of the United Nations. Miss Bratton has broken several of the world's typing records. October The winner of the Mrs. America Contest was announced. The winner, the former Miss Eleanor Harshbarger, said she has never been so happy in all her life. Shirley Morrison, commercial teacher from Chicago, graduated a senior class of 40 who were all 'IOO-word-a-minute typists. Two explorers, long ago believed to be lost, returned from the Arctic regions. Carl Hesser and Donald Hooper announced they would meet with the President and his advisors within the week. November Miss Marie Mundy, employed at the Lewistown Hospital, received congratulations from the Governor for her daring rescue ofa small child trapped in a burning building. Miss Connie Yoder accepted the position as head of the make-up department for one of the large studios in Hollywood. Margie Yoder, her cousin, ioined her in Holly- wood to become her personal secretary. A National Bull's Eye Medal was awarded to Miss Thelma Yoder as Best Marks- woman in the Nation. She has won many ribbons and cups in shooting contests all over the country. December As a finale to her trampoline act, Miss Joyce Thompson performed the almost im- possible double backward flip, with three twists, a forward somersault, and finished by doing the split. Miss Thompson spent years perfecting this stunt. Aura Kay Hockenberry, Linda Henry, and Leona Freed became chief secretaries to the preisdent. They were chosen from over a thousand applicants in anationwideinter- view conducted by the Association of Certified Public Secretaries.

Dateline... :amber 31, 1968 Good evening ladies and gentlemen. This is Nigel Wisehart of the New York Daily Express. The program is Dateline--December 31, I968. This is a special telecast designed to recap the outstanding news events of the year. January Multi-millionaire Lloyd Mowery opened another in his world-wide chain of super markets which has made him one of the richest men of the nation. Charlie Martin's record of Rothrock Bop hit the million sales mark. We can't help but compare his success to the singer Elvis Presley who made his mark ten years ago. The Lady Lions, recently established basketball team at Pennsylvania State University, captured the cup in the Women's National Collegiate Basketball League. The girls credited the success to their coach, Charlotte Lantz. February The new Secretary of Agriculture, Stanley Snook, ioined the President's cabinet. The first rocket base was finished on the moon. Aeronautical Engineer Captain Donald Yoder was placed in command. The rest of the crew was made up of Gerald Grassmyer, chief mechanic, Charles Harshbarger and Robert Yoder, navigators. March Modern painter Art Dalby showed his collection at Carnegie Hall. Critics world- wide hailed him as the outstanding artist of our times. Elma Dunmire swam the English Channel, cutting 15 minutes from the record. Miss Dunmire has also swum on our Olympic team. Nurses Dotti Bossinger and Kay Shottsberger saved the life of millionaire John Grassmyer and received Sl00,000 each. Both nurses have retired. Pearl Miller perfected a cake mix which threatens Betty Crocker. lt consists of a cake already mixed which you simply place in the oven. April A rocket bound for outer space blasted off at 12:00 noon. lts pilotand sole passenger was Betty Hartley, first woman to enter outer space. Flight nurses Captains Kemper Laudenslager and Carol Hoover arrived on the moon to set up a hospital. Grace Sweitzer, first woman to enter the 500-mile race at Indianapolis, became the first woman to win this contest. Her chief mechanic, Rhoda Swartz, was on hand for the presentation of the winner's cup. June Etta Mae Crossgrove became a receptionist for the United Nations. Cinema actress Connie Shirk won 6 Oscars. Her agent, June Gillam, was unable to be present at the Award ceremonies.
