The following poem written by ane Gray won recognition in the lqexas High School Poetry contest Of l946 47 sponsored by Mary Hardin Baylor College ILLUSION Her eyes shine in the moonlight Reflected in the rippling stream Grey lined with silver Like the costly mantel Of some King And yet her face IS pale Pale with the same faint glow As the small shells Upon the sand When the tide is low Her hair dark and long 'l angled as a windy sea Dark as ebony As the other side Of the moon must be Rich as sable Sable as her shadow Her long slender fingers Resting for a moment Upon my hand Fluttermg slightly The silence IS her voice And yet each word ls clear to me She speaks with her eyes And where moonlight lingers With her fluttering fingers Her pale sweet mouth is Like a closed lotus bud ln the moonlight Pale pink against the night Her kiss Soft yet excitmg As a draught of warm red wine Like a magnet Her lips draw mme The soft rustle of grass Her meloclious sighs The stars in the water Her silver lined eyes A flashing moonbeam Her irredescent smile Full of enchantment Empty of guile The restless reeds- Her thanled hair ls she a dream Gr is she really there3 11 l 17 Like the wing of some lost bird.
