It is for this reason that high school annuals are printed. The Roswell Senior High School annual, El Coyote, is a graphic example of such a publication. My first assignment as sponsor of El Coyote was in 1923, and I have been privileged to serve in this capacity to the present time. Through this period of years, the high old r'h's' school annual, like the school itself, has new r'h's' grown to large proportions. The 1923 El Coyote had pictures of 81 graduating seniors and contained 124 pages. lt was bound in paper and sold for a dollar and fifty cents. lt was printed by Hall-Poorbaugh Press, as were all El Coyotes until 1951 when the offset method was adopted, with Taylor Publishing Co. of Dallas printing the book. The pictures have been made by the Rodden, Ball, and Duffy Studios. By the offset method, expensive half-tone cuts were eliminated, making possible full page pictures at very low cost. With this type of printing, El Coyote has grown to its present size of 264 pages, with pictures of approximately 300 seniors. The number of books printed this year was 950, and the price of the book is now 354. I am leaving a complete file of all El Coyotes published since Volume l in 1910. The annual has always been completely self-supporting through the sale of the books, receipts from the Senior Class Play, and advertising by local business firms. ln recent years three new features have been added to the book. These are a directory and handbook called El Coyote Pup, a double disk record of school events, and a 24-page supplement containing pictures of late spring activities through Commence- ment. The cost of these features has been included in the price of the annual. The El Coyote Tea is held on an afternoon in May in the gym. At this time the yearbooks are dis- tributed to the student body by classes and the students spend the rest of the afternoon signing annuals. The personal contacts which I have made while working with the various El Coyote staffs and faculties have been most enioyable. To have had a vital part in producing Roswell High School annuals for the past 35 years will always be a source of satisfaction and a cherished memory. C- '3 in .Y Q-A S YK! In the first quarter the Coy- otes were deep in Ysleta territory, but the Indians got the ball. In the second quarter Roswell and Ysleta each reeled off yardage, but could not seem to muster a scoring attack. The third quarter found neither team get- ting anywhere. In the fourth quarter Tank- ersly ran the ball to the Ysleta 25, but the attack was stopped by the sound of the gun ending a hard-fought O-O ball game. Outstanding player: Brian Copple. RAMS DEFEATED IN SEASON OPENER Roswell-38 Portales-O Roswell played a good game against the Portales eleven in this, the season opener. Roswell touchdowns in the first quarter were made by Jerry Wade and Howard Jones. Later Carpenter made it 20-O. A beautiful 42-yard run by McBride gave Roswell a 26-O margin at half-time. McBride and Landfair each scored in the third quarter to wind up the game. Out- standing player: Gerald McBride. Ysleta-lt takes more than two to stop a Coyote like Carpenter. TEXANS HAND COYOTES FIRST LOSS Roswell-7 Borger-I3 Roswell was pitted against this tough Texas team with the idea of a rough and tumble game. It was! ln the first quarter both teams battled on even terms. ln the second quarter Roswell could not hold the Texans as they scored and led 7-O at the half. Using a powerful ground attack, Bofger scored again in the third period. In the final period Carpenter and Blair teamed up on passing to complete 7 out of I2 passes and give Roswell a touchdown. After Tankersly kicked the extra point the ball game ended: I3-7. Outstanding player: Ken Blair. COYOTES UPSET BULLDOGS Roswell-lf? Albuquerque l-ligh-O Roswell showed itself a team to be reck- oned with in this game with the previously unbeaten Albuquerque team. ln the first quarter the Coyotes were hampered by pen- alties, but the Bulldogs were continually stopped by Roswell's defense. For the Coy- otes' first touchdown Carpenter went over on a sneak play, leaving the score at the half 6-O. In the third and fourth quarters the now fired-up Roswell team scored twice, once on the ground and once in the air, with a pass from Carpenter to Tankersly. Roswell won a lf?-O victory from an old rival. Out- standing playerz Jerry Wade. Albuquerque: Don't let him get away, Copple Bowie: Nice catch-Coyote. SILVER FOXES SLIP BY COYOTES RoswellfO Jefferson of El Paso-7 This wet, muddy game was played in a downpour of rain all the first half. This first half was marred by fumbles, and pass- ing and running were nearly impossible. ln the second half the rain slackened, but the Coyotes were unable to score, even after the Silver Foxes made a touchdown. Roswell fought a hard game, 7-O, and found out what it is like to play football in ankle-deep rain. Outstanding player: Joe Dye. - ew.. ' ROSVVELL SKINS BOWIE BEARS Roswell-34 Bowie of El Paso-6 Roswell's stiff defense and going offense paid off in this tilt. In the final quarter Mc- Bride and Carpenter teamed up to bring two touchdowns, making the score l3-O. In the second quarter Carpenter threw a 26-yard pass to Howard Jones to set up the next touchdown by McBride. Jesse Landfair scored the fourth and Morey Carpenter the fifth and final touch- down for the Coyotes. Bowie scored with less than lO seconds left in the game which ended 34-6. COYOTES GROUND EAGLES 'Roswell419 Hobbs-6 Roswell downed this tough Hobbs team, after a hard fought game, to make it two conference wins in a row. The first quarter saw a Coyote touchdown by Morey Car- penter from the 12-yard line. Carpenter then completed three passes and Schenck went over for another touchdown to make the score 12-O at the half. The Eagles made a touchdown in the third quarter, and in the fourth Carpenter cli- maxed a 51-yard drive with a 5-yard touch- down plunge. Tankersley converted and the score stood at 19-6 as the final gun sounded. Outstanding player: Robert Green. ll8 +C WILDCATS TAMED FOR CONFERENCE WIN ,'Roswell-26 Clovis-7 The Coyotes played their first conference game against the Wildcats from Clovis. The first quarter was scoreless with Clovis fight- ing hard but held by Roswell's defense. ln the second quarter McBride scored and Tankersley converted to make it 7-O. A pass from Carpenter to Tankersley brought the second Roswell touchdown and the half ended 14-O. The Wildcats made a touchdown in the third quarter. In the fourth Willard Allen hit pay dirt climaxing a 61-yard drive and Allan Hamilton intercepted a pass and went 38 yards for the final touchdown, making the score 26-7. Outstanding player: Earl Tankersley. TIGERS VICTIMS OF COYOTE ATTACK ARosweIIf2l Alamogordo-I3 The Coyotes made their record 3-O in con- ference play with this victory over the Ala- mogordo Tigers. In the first quarter each team battled evenly. The Coyotes' first score was set up by a AO-yard pass from Car- penter to Blair and made by Glaze Sacra. Late in the second period Roswell scored on a sneak play by Carpenter. In the third quarter the Tigers came alive with a touchdown, but Roswell also scored when Carpenter threw two beautiful passes. After Tankersley's conversion the score stood at 21-6. The Coyotes allowed the Tigers one more touchdown in the fourth as the game ended QI-l3. Outstanding player: Eddie Van Meter. Earl found it!!! In the first quarter, which was marred by fumbles because of the cold, Roswell presented a stiff defenseg but Ar- tesiais French broke through scampering 78 yards for a touchdown. In the second quar- ter Artesia again scored, this time on a long run by Mitchell, making the score l3-O at the half. The third and fourth quarters saw the two teams battling evenly and Rosvvell get- ting to the Artesia 5-yard line before losing the ball.
