We proudly present to you our 1954 ROSTRAVETTE in which we have endeavored to record your past life at Bostraver. For you, the underclassmen, we have recorded within these pages the beginning of your sojourn at our school. Your years here have just begun--years in which the tree of knowledge will spread branches of loyalty, devotion, and spiritual and moral growth be- fore you. You need only to reach forward and pluck of its fruit. We hope that you will find enough happy recollections within the pages of this book to look ahead with eager anticipation to the school years before you. . For you, the graduating class, we have attempted to portray your last year at Ros- traver-the gay, the serious, the unforgettable. You are but a small part of the endless chain of students who have already graduated: nevertheless, you too have helped estab- lish the spirit and tradition that lingers and permeates each corner of our building. Now, equipped with the fruits of education acquired at our school, you leave these walls facing a future uncertain, but filled with opportunity. Wherever the path leads, may you achieve success, and may you see a brighter tomorrow-a tomorrow better than yesterday or today. The above poem says in words what we cannot express when we want to show our appreciation for the time you have spent listening to our book reports, and the guidance you have given us in our schoolwork and personal lives. No other influence has contributed more towards making our life at Hostraver of lasting value. The bridge built by the eminent engineer, the magnificent skyscraper de- signed by the architect, and the fashions created by the designer exist but for a little while. Their objective is to provide the greatest possible educational opportunities for all the students of Rostraver Town- ship consistent with the resources of our district. Officers of the Board are Thomas G. Patterson, President: Samuel Weightmarr, Vice President: Al- though they are non-members. Marian Driscoll serves as secretary and E. Frank Carter, superin- tendent, participates in an advisory capacity. As we look forward to our graduation which has been made possible by their planning, we pause to show our appreciation for their efforts. E. F. CARTER We realize that if any organization is to be a success it must have an efficient leader. Mr. Carter has filled that capacity at Rostraver. Al- though we don't see him as often as our other supervisors, he is not only responsible for our studies and activities but also for scheduling our bus transportation. Yet iew of us realize the tremendous responsibility they assume. These responsibilities they shoulder are serious and important. Approximately 500 students of our school depend on their careful driving to transport them safely to school and back home again. Their services, too, are numerous and done with- out complaint. The scheduling oi various after- school practices, plus games and parades, require many extra trips for them, and much extra time. PROM COMMITTEE We worked, and we worked, and we worked. Tired? You bet! Don't look it, do we? Glam May 24, 1954 Hostraver High School Pricedale, Pa. Dear Graduates. Can you imagine? We're seniors! Last Sunday we attended Baccalaureate Services: tomorrow evening we graduate. The big event of our past dreams has arrived. It seems like only yesterday that we walked so timidly through the door as freshmen. School to us was such a maze. These steps went up: those, down. When would we ever learn the right ones to take! But we were determined to learn, and learn we did. What a year that was! New courses. new friends, our very own football team, and our first high school party. It was far more important to us then, than the prom. In '52 back we came as sophomores. Wise fools many called us, but nevertheless we were there. Now was our first chance to show our worth. Quickly we organized our class. Mr. Brady and Mrs. Wood served as sponsors: Earl Iones, George Povrzanich, Audrey Gibbs, and Mary Sickles were our officers. Aside from our heavy studying Land we really didl, wandering through the halls, building up the treasury t???J, and cramming for tests. we found time for a class shindig. The gym was decorated, and on the appointed day beaus and their gals swung into the Valentine festivities. Summer crept in and whizzed by. Holy smokes! Upperclassmen with a million and one things to do. Election time came. The winning politicians: Mr. Hough and Mrs. Danti, sponsors: Ronald Holet, Ronald Sonafelt, Mary Sickles, and Elaine Ahlbom, officers. Remember when we ordered our class rings? Standard ones at that! Gee. the committee sure had a rough time selecting a ring style, but wasn't the type they finally decided on beautiful? This was our gift to Rostra- ver's tradition. Through fall until spring everyone worked like slaves to raise the money for the Iunior-Senior Banquet and the prom. Our class play, You're Young Only Twice, helped a lot. We thought we'd never get Aunt Agatha married off. But. as always, we pulled through. The banquet held in honor of the Class of '53 was at Rehoboth on May 6. Everyone. seniors included, went home stuffed full of food and fun. Then it ar- rived, right on time. May Z2-our prom. The decorating committee rolled roll after roll of crepe paper, painted cardboard-and themselves, too, from dusk until midnight for weeks. It actually took tons of paper to transform our gym into a castle ballroom. But that night every moment of preparation proved its worth. Wally Ginger's Orchestra was heavenly. After the dance everyone took off for the Elks in Charleroi and the first postprom party in the history of Rostraver. What a time we had! Summer passed again. lust time enough to catch our breath. Now we were seniors, Class of '54. We were the ones who told the underclassmen which steps to use going up or down. Did you see our senior pictures? Never realized we looked so wonderful, did you? ' Ronald Holet, Ronald Sonafelt, Elaine Ahlborn, and Mary Ann Radzik were chosen the leaders of the biggest year of our lives: Mr. Mattee and Mrs. Winnett were elected our senior advisers. Remember our magazine campaign? Boy! Did we go out and sell! Everyone in the class did a great job to push us over our goal. The 12-3's were guests of the 12-l's and 12-2's at a turkey dinner given in their honor for selling the most magazine subscriptions. Aunt Cathie's Cat took the spotlight next. The cast was swell, don't you think? Cathie was some detec- tive, lane got her man. and all righty was heard around school many months afterwards. Following this mystery-comedy came our Iunior-Senior Banquet at Rehoboth and then the prom. But now we were the guests of honor. The juniors couldn't have done a better job. The banquet was tops and the prom-oh, that prom! Everything was gorgeous. The girls floated around in fluffy gowns. the boys were Prince Charm- ings. Handing out our yearbooks was next. Hope you liked yours. Now we are graduating. We've struggled through chemistry, trig, typing budgets, and Shakespeare. To- morrow, when we enter the door in our caps and gowns of white and blue, we will enter for the last time as students. The next time we enter these doors, it will be as graduates. Imagine how many different doors our class will be going through in the future-college doors, factory doors, doors leading to every part of the world. Some will lead to great things and some to sorrow and disappointment. But no matter what door we enter, our lives will always coincide with our motto, Excelsior-ever onward, and each door in the end will lead to success and happiness. They began a busy term with the elec- tion of two hard-working sponsors, Miss Harvey and Mr. Estok, and a very efficient staff of officers. With the cooperation of their individual members, this class was active from beginning to end. They contributed several outstanding members to the football and basketball teams. band, chorus, and other organizations. A major event in their lives arose when their class rings finally arrived. For the first few weeks they were strangers to each other and to all the parts of high school life. As their first year rushed by. a boy from Webster played football next to a boy from Collinsburq. and girls from Lebanon and La Grange studied English together. Soon our freshman class became a unified body with the abilities and talents of a promising class. Beside the opportunity of developing musical abilities, their characters and personalities are trained for life's future responsi- bilities. When the first whisper of football floats into the air, eager members and substitutes return from va- cations to throw away rusty notes, two left legs, and crooked lines. Their year's work has begun. This year sixty-three members proudly marched behind their high-stepping leader, Audrey Gibbs, at football games and parades. Hot music poured forth. Members of the band displayed true individual talent by being accepted to participate in the Coun- ty Band Festival. Earl Iones and Kerin Narbut rep- resented the unit in Western District Band. Earl Iones also participated in State Band. To replenish the exhausted Musical Fund the youthful musicians worked fervently at various projects. Readers' Digests were sold, a skating party held, and Slim Bryant was called for a hoe-down on Ianuary 30. The band's year came to a joyous close. Their annual banquet was held, and the senior members honored. When asked about the hard work in- volved, the bandsmen rang back with this familiar answer, Yes, the work has been hard, but it's sure been fun. Where have they gone? To chorus practice of course. Practices are squeezed into every spare minute in preparation for the an- nual Spirit of Christmas in Concert. The per- formance fell on December 21 this year. Har- monious tones flowed from the voices of students dressed in white and blue choral robes. The audience was swept by Christmas Tide and The Night Beiore Christmas into the Christmas spirit. ln addition to their annual concert work in- dividual members sang for local civic groups and attended the County and District Chorus. They devoted their extra time in helping the band restore the musical fund. In return for their efforts they have gained traits of responsibility and good citizenship. A comparatively young organization, this club was formed tor the purpose of preparing stu- dents tor a business career and this year it attained its largest membership. Then toward the end of the school year the entire group toured Pittsburgh visiting such places as the Heinz Plant and the Business Training College. On the merrymaking side these folks tossed a Christmas Party and ieted the graduating members at another party that was held in May. . They have to be done before the deadline. These words were never repeated more often than by the co-editors of the Revealer, our high school paper. And no small wonder! Besides publishing the six-page Revealer our busy Hi-Steppers serve as the band's maiorettes and also assist the band financially by spon- soring their own activities. Thus, to complete the newspaper write-ups before the deadline creates quite a problem. But despite these difficulties the club still managed to improve and enlarge the Revealer. Chalk up a very successful year for the Future Farmers ol America Club. Completing one of its most active years, this group, with a membership almost double its former size, sponsored many worthwhile projects. One project in which the club did exceedingly well was the State Project Contest where Lloyd Byers, Edward Rinkoli, Melvin Smith, and Bill Stone- man received medals for their individual achieve- ments. Striding on to iurther honors, our F.F.A. did better in this contest than any other F.F.A. in the county. Other activities range from the serious to the good time variety. One of their service activities was to aid needy families in the district. For re- laxation these sowers of seed held several parties, including a swimming party in early spring. They also organized a basketball team which was com- posed ol the club's members. Then in the fall of the year these boys journeyed to Harrisburg for the Pennsylvania Farm Show. Skating parties and township projects contributed to their prosperity. In keeping with a long standing tradition, the fellows played Santa Claus to an orphan boy at the Greensburg Chi1dren's Home. Thirty-eight boys are receiving practical experience in welding, lathe work, operating milling machines, and repair- ing electric motors given to them by local mines. Great pride is taken by these boys in com- pleting small projects ior the betterment of the school. This year they erected partitions in the boys' shower room and the railing on the new foot bridge. Two lield trips to Pittsburgh were enjoyed by the fellows: one to the General Motors Show, the other a mining lecture at the William Penn Hotel. To bring the year to a close their supervisors, Mr. Sapko and Mr. Moore, accompanied the boys on a tour ol Caliiornia State Teachers College. These future miners, in their jackets of gray, are looking iorward to taking a part in one of Pennsylvania's main industries. The Ros- traver Historical Society is true to this definition. Our students, who believe that each event in his- tory has a definite effect on our lives today, have united under the guidance of Mr. Fleming and Mr. Wolle to discuss past and future historical events. Every second Thursday of each month they as- semble in the school for intellectual and social fellowship. This year's activities began with Concord Day which the members helped plan, and participated in, the celebration of the building of the first school house in the township. Next came the trip to Greensburg lor the County Historical Society. The entire group attended and gave their full support to William Manko, one of their members, who was elected vice president of the county. Last, but cer- tainly not least, came the annual trip to the state convention in Harrisburg. Needless to say. every- one enjoyed themselves. These girls are united for this purpose: serving the stu- dent body in the library. Each member donates a minimum of one period a week for this purpose, Under the guidance oi Mrs. Iones the members of this club have learned the techniques of library work, but more important-they have learned to face each student with a smile even alter they have asked for the same book a dozen times in one period. But the life of a librarian is not all work. Each year the club enjoys a trip which makes up for these hours spent in the library.
