Introduction 15 s ACimnES EVENTS •• ■ V ■•■- ' .. i ' -- Potpourri ' 73 Students return with resumption of new classes Summer ended with the ringing of the school bell. Back in the halls of R.H.S., students returned to the swing of school life. Cafeterias refilled, while local restaurants welcomed students ' new business. Students lingered around the halls, breeze-ways, and the campus trying to find something new to do. Motorcycles covered a large area within the teachers ' parking lot as good weather enabled cyclists to ride their cycles to school. Do I ever have a lousy schedule! Have you seen the new boy who moved here this summer? Male and female students com¬ pare experiences of the first day of school. Sitting around in the halls left no choice except the floor. Connie Mix and Bud Fowler relaxed together the first day back at R.H.S. 18 Potpourri Hanging around the breezeway after lunch refreshed students. Paul Swanson, Steve Hammer, Phillip Smith, Chuck Purcell, and Scott McCuiston enjoyed the nice weather. Freshman, Kenny Kyle, tried to believe that soon he would be playing on the Rossville High football field. Busy cafeterias regained business with return of students. Students chose from a large variety of food, candy, and soft drinks. Potpourri 19 Unknown pranksters rolled trees during the night on the school ' s campus. That will be a size six ' suggested the senior ring salesman. Janet Chadwick and Ann Chambers measured for rings with other junior classmates. Yearbook advertisements were placed in students ' sight, in hopes of a high sales rate. 20 Potpourri 73 Potpourri 73 Various antics, sales, improvements begin year Paved lots improved parking conditions for students who purchased a parking space. The spaces were sold for two dollars each. A five dollar fine was given to any violator parking in someone ' s space. Construction workers completed work almost two weeks following the first school day. Juniors ordered class rings in Reference Library. Rings returned in January and juniors flashed them around underclassmen. Roines were ordered during homeroom for seven dollars. Pranksters rolled trees on the school campus. Toilet paper remained on trees for all students to see the next day. Groups formed throughout all halls making new cliques and congesting halls. Groups drew together as different cliques. Gale Carey stopped talking to smile for the camera. City highway construction workers paved the new student parking lot. Paved lots were located behind annex and the main school building. Potpourri ' 73 21 Pep Sessions Unique ideas boost school spirit at pep rallys Students reported to the football field every Friday, sixth period for Pep Ses¬ sion. Cheerleaders and band members welcomed students with music and warm smiles. Competition Yell-Out gave each class a chance to prove its own spirit. Classes were judged and winners were selected. The Sophomore Class tied with Seniors for first place. The Pep Club presented its annual program at Pep Session. It consisted of a skit with male cheerleaders and female football players. All other pep sessions were planned and conducted by the RHS Cheerleaders and Mrs. Knight. Sophomores tied for First place with the theme “Bulldog Battleground. The float represented only half of their unique skit. Seniors tied for First place In Competition Yell- Out with a theme, We make our own kind of Spirit. Mike Brown, Steve Hammer, and Ricky Anderson pulled Jimmy Morgan and Cary Robins on the field. Pep Club pep session cheerleaders were Gary Robins, Claude Duffey, Bobby Butler, Steve Hammer, Steve Moreland, and Captain Bob¬ by McNabb. 22 Pep Sessions Signs filled the stands while students yelled and held signs. The Juniors hoped to place high in Competition Yell-Out. Cheerleaders presented weekly skits to rouse Bulldogs ' Spirit. Terri Roberts and Jeannie Henley jump with joy after defeating a weekly foe. Freshmen presented a group pretending to be R. L. Osborne Cardinals and lay dead on the ground after being shot. Pep Sessions 23 Homecoming Rain postpones Homecoming; curiosity rises Homecoming Queen-Jeannie Henley 24 Pep Sessions Senior Representative-Jan Campbell Senior Representative-Jennifer Morrow Homecoming 1972-1973 remained traditional as senior candidates and class representatives attired in ante-bellum gowns walked across the field to the accompaniment of the Miss America Theme. Rain, an unwelcome condition present for Homecoming the past two years, caused a postponement of the game until Saturday night. Chosen from three Senior finalists. Miss Jeannie Henley reigned as 1972-73 Homecoming Queen. Jan Campbell and Jennifer Morrow, queen finalists, shed undistinguished tears of joy, sadness and relief that it was over. Now the rumors and mudslinging could be forgotten and hopefully forgiven. All three girls had been selected by the Senior class from a group of six semi-finalists. Campaigns carried out the she ' s the best theme with a multitude of vari¬ colored and shaped signs. Campaigners doled out favors with attached candy. Persuasive vote-getting smiles, motor¬ cades with blaring horns and screaming students completed election day activities. Jan Campbell, Jeannie Henley, and Jennifer Morrow nervously await the announcement of the new queen. Homecoming 25 Homecoming Students vote, parade, elect Homecoming Queen! Junior Representative-Leah Harris Sophomore Representative-Connie Wall Dressed in light blue, three girls, elected through a election, found themselves on a slushy field Homecoming night. The girls each carried one red rose to highlight their dresses of an ante-bellum gown style. Fans cheered the homecoming half time as excitement grew. The announcement of the new queen gave relief to almost everyone throughout the stadium. Homecoming candidates and the court rode a Pep Club float escorted by police and a motorcade. The parade encountered Rossville traffic from the entire city. The float was designed in blue and white with the court dressed also in blue and white. Pep Club ' s float presented candidates, Jan Campbell, Jeannie Henley, Jennifer Morrow, and court, Tammy Eubanks, Leah Harris, and Connie Wall in a motorcade through the Rossville area. 26 Homecoming Tears of happiness were found as jeannie Henley tried to believe she was the new queen. Many varieties of suits were displayed by sponsors and escorts. Becky Miller, sponsor, was escorted by Bendy Kellerhals. Homecoming 27 Homecoming Players select Homecoming sponsors and escorts Undoubtedly the most attractive parts of being a senior football player were get¬ ting a letter to put on one ' s jacket and asking a girl to become one ' s sponsor. This sponsor represented the senior player at the halftime program of Homecoming game. As the sponsor came across the football field on Homecoming night, the players received second half plans. But, a feeling of pride prevailed in the locker room. The girls received mum corsages with the player ' s number in the center. Escorts wore white boutonnieres to add to their suits. Sponsors and escorts preceding halftime were Mike Cole, Beverly Gore; Joe Don Stephens, Debbie Womack; Dennis Brock, Marcia Hanes; Kathy Butler, Bobby Shellnut; Lynita Purcell, Steve Moreland; Darlene Brown, Steve Hammer. Captain Dicky Clark and Becky Miller Paul Swanson and Darlene Brown Bud Fowler and Elaine Born Ronnie McDaniel and Tricia Kellerhals Larry North and Kathy Woodall 28 Homecoming Sponsors and escorts were Jimmy Morgan, Sallye Williams; Bobby Butler, Patricia Kellerhals; Scott McCuiston and Lynita Purcell Johnny Burnett, Elaine Born; Becky Miller, Bendy Kellerhals; Kathy Woodall, Mark Stephenson; B. Terri North, Pam Robins, Kenny Kyle, Sheree Hartman, and Teresa Morgan plan new activities for the Freshman class. Friendly faces and pretty smiles won votes for Jennifer Morrow, Homecoming Queen candidate. Lynita Purcell pins a favor on Bobby Shelnutt. Elections ' 73 Voting, campaigning, elections at RHS, 72-73 Several students gathered to urge new voters to vote for their candidate. Students who participated were Bendy Kellerhals, Steve Moreland, Diane Mizell, Mary Alice Clark, Elvira Word, Nancy Trundle, Charles Adams, and Frank Hufstetler. Voting and campaigns began with Homecoming elections and ended with the election of Class Night Court. Students campaigned for the Homecoming candidate they wanted as queen. Favors were distributed and smiles greeted unknown students trying to win their votes. Sophomore class officers campaigned with signs and favors trying to win the confidence of classmates. Seniors who were eighteen were urged to vote at the City Hall. American Government classes campaigned to get voters to vote during the National Election. A booth was set up for students to vote for their choice in the Presidential election. Voting for class officers, Cathy Queen tries to decide her choice for office. Indoor and outdoor activities occupied faculty members ' and students ' time. Golfing, ping-pong, tennis and other sports filled the long hours of boring days. Teachers worked for students through various means of help. Seniors ordered invitations and jewelry getting in the mood for graduation. Last minute activities were planned; parties and dances for students were given. 32 Potpourri Grading papers, working on yearbook, and attending graduate school filled many overtime hours for Mrs. Bozeman. Officers representing each class were appointed specific duties. Tickets were sold for $1.50 per person. The band, Apple Jam, pleased students with three hours of dance music. Refreshments were served throughout the party. The treats were prepared by the new Food Service Class. Lack of money made it necessary to charge ten cents a person to check in shoes, coats, or handbags. Students were required to take off their shoes before entering the gym floor. % ' A Hk. V Tired feet found nearby chairs to relieve tensions. Donna Curtis and date cuddled on the sidelines to watch other dancers. Soft music and dim lights made it possible for Steve Williams and date Doris Black to find themselves in a world of their own. 34 Dances Rocking with the music, B. J. Brooks and Jiffy Blevins danced to the fast music of “Apple Jam. Even teachers got into the swing; Miss Elliot and date demonstrated their vigor for students. Despite the formal attire, the word for feet was informal. Maureen Blevins and date enjoyed a fast dance at the Christmas party. Couples gathered at the check-in counter to chat or leave their possessions. Debbie Edwards, Randy Akridge, Jerry Smith, and Angie Warner take time out to talk. Dances 35 Fashions 73 Keeping up with new fashions proves challenging The Shag epidemic spread throughout R.H.S. Debbie Baker models one of the many styles. Teenboard members from area stores were well represented at R.H.S. Fashions worn by members displayed items that could be purchased at their respective stores. Smock-tops, the no-bra look, and baggies rated high in students ' clothing. Girls found the smock- top comforta ble dress-wear for school. Cuffed baggies grew in popularity with both male and female students. Shags were the most common hair style worn. These hair-cuts ranged from long shags to short ones. Long hair still remained in at R.H.S. Arm-wear made students take interest in prisoners of war with the P.O.W. Bracelet. Cool and comfortable is a good description for this raging style, the Smock-Top, worn by Phyllis Guest. Members of teenboards from area stores wear uniforms to advertise latest fashions. Left to Right: Kathy Butler, Lovemans; Sharon Scott, Terri Roberts, Kay Helton, Jo-Ann Shop; Paula Bohanon, Miller Brothers. Arm-wear consisted of P.O.W. or M.I.A. bracelets which students ordered. I L Fashions 37 Card games took up long hours on an afternoon date. Marsheena Green, Beverly Gore, Steve Hammer, and Mike Cole play a fast hand of poker. Keeping in shape, joggers found near-by fields an advantage. Bud Fowler and Connie Hix take an afternoon jog. 38 Dating Dating 73 Afternoon, evening dates remain casual affairs Valentine candy and sweethearts found happiness on February 14. Tom Hufstetier presents Rochelle Powell a token of his affection. Dates remained normal at R.H.S. with few occasions for exciting affairs. Afternoon card games, jogging or watching television became a routine for many ' ' Steadies. Formal parties, sock-hops, or cookouts gave couples a chance to mingle with other couples, junior Senior Prom and the Christmas Party became the only two formal events couples attended in formals and tuxedos. Valentines, birthdays, and Christmas presents were ex¬ changed by steady dates to show their affection. Dating 39 Marriage 73 Love, faith, marriage unites couples at R.H.S. Mr. and Mrs. Steve Emrick cut their wedding cake with hope of happiness. 40 Marriage Miss changed to Mrs. while students planned their futures. More couples than ever expected united in marriage and returned to school. Christmas presents ranged from promise rings to engagement rings to wedding bands. Students found apartments near the school ' s location to ease transportation problems. Now wives found themselves preparing supper, washing dishes, and balancing a budget. Married students from Freshmen to Seniors had the right to continue school as long as they wished. Some wives continued school during their early months of pregnancy and returned later to complete the year. Making a wedding list, Zelda Carter wrote out names of members of her family that she was inviting to her wedding. Youngest mother at Rossville, Ann Chambers holds her daughter, Jennifer. school schedule to dream about her wedding dress. Wedding dresses were shown through various magazines. Suzanne Powell took time o ut of her Marriage 41 College 73 Senior students seek acceptance to a university Excited, Steve Romanchik smiles and winks to show his happiness for acceptance to the University of Georgia. 42 College Important decisions had to be made concerning which college a student should attend. Mr. Kenneth Wood, guidance counselor, and Boyd Hargraves discuss Boyd ' s college plans. Colleges and universities began receiving applications from all high schools. RHS students mailed applications early in hopes of being accepted. Happy students received news of acceptance through letters; other students received letters of acceptance after a long wait. Business schools took the place of colleges for many senior students. These students took mainly business courses throughout school hoping to use them after graduation. Mailing the college application on time seemed important to Gary Ashley. He mailed the application at the school ' s mail box. College 43 Looking over last year ' s yearbook, students wondered whether this year ' s would arrive on time. Sharon Dean silently thinks of past memories. What a mess! A candid picture of the women teacher ' s lounge surprised Mrs. Mildred Mullis, a substitute teacher. School drew to a close and students realized that the year was almost over. New thoughts of summer entered students ' heads; summer baseball, graduation, jobs and swimming. Teachers felt joy and relief that they had made it through another year, but many looked forward to plans being made for the quarter system for next school year. Folk dances were taught to students to acquire poise and grace. Badminton, horseshoes, archery, and softball were taught to P.E. students. Some courses taught were optional to the student. Modern dance filled three weeks of listening to music, thinking of stels, and worry. No costumes were presented because of the hard task of acquiring them. The first few days of the 72-73 school term found Freshmen scurrying down the lockerlined halls in search of their next class. Being a Freshman was not easy, but the newcomers quickly began to learn that they have to accept the new respon- sibilitiesalong with the new privileges. It did not take them long to find out what being a Bulldog was all about. Since time was running out before Competition Yell-Out, election of class officers was held in a class meeting. This avoided having to go through the rigorous activity of campaigning, and proved to be just as enjoyable to the energetic bunch of Freshmen that gathered in the auditorium. Aureluis Closing 253 I i I ♦ Lives of great men all remind us We can makeour lives sublime, And departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time. Longfellow 254 Closing - rj,.. The Happening took place in Room 22. Nineteen students and two advisors worked together for a common goal ... a goal not defined, yet well understood. Creative ideas written on paper are torn apart, only to be written over and perfected. Time was spent sixth period, after school and late at night to meet deadlines that were never met. Emotions expressed between fellow workers varied—affection, anger, or aughter. Aspirations, ideas, hopes, and spirits were shared between all who were involved. A world was created within a single room, the Roines. Now the time on the meter has run out. No longer can we ' park at Rossville High School, for it is time to move on ... to build upon the knowledge and experience gained here. Alas! how swift the moments fly! How flash the years along!
