THE LARS Published by the Senior Class of '57 Rossville High School ROSSVILLE, INDIANA Volume XII HONORARY TIME GOOD OLD TIMES HARD TIMES GRADUATION TIME HAPPY TIME BUSY TIME PARLIAMENTARY TIME RECORD TIME DEDICATION They have understood our problems, assisted us with infinite patience, listened to our complaints with wise understanding, inspired us with confidence, encouraged us when we were disheartened, and increased our chances for success. We shall always remember their determined effort to make us satis- fied and happy as one of our most precious high school memories. Words can't express our appreciation for their various contributions; but to show that we honor and respect them, we the Senior Class dedicate this '57 Lars to our parents and teachers. Realizing that school life has so many facets that pictures of classes, organizations, and sports activities couldn't tell the complete story, we have labeled this section of our pages GOOD OLD TIMES Above: Mrs. Rodkey aids Keith Rothenberger and Arthur Hufford, who are working on the sports divsion of the LARS. Above: Phyllis Cooper, who assists Mrs. Chney as a student teacher, gives encouragement to Mike Gay- lor, a second grader. Right: Freshman students study bi- ology under the supervision of Mr. Kramer. (Oh, those frogs!) Above: The cafeteria, serving over 300 students a day, is always a busy place. At lunch students relax and enjoy each other's company. left: Herbert Louck and Ronnie Hodgen mimeograph the school paper which is published five times a semester. Right: Newsworthy items posted on the bulletin board on the stair landing interest the students; the library and journalism staff keep the bulletin board outside the office attractive and timely. Penny Skiles and Sally Miller help with this winter scene. Below: School nurse Mary lou Miller is a frequent visitor at school. Here she gives Roy Oaks the patch test for tuberculosis. Right: Several Rossville students leave for the state scholastic contests in English, Latin, «Spanish, and math, which are sponsored by Indiana University. Below: Larry Cohee, Virginia Cameron, Maurice Davies, and Carolyn Kelly work on the annual maga- zine subscription drive sponsored each fall by the senior class. Howard Hendrickson, senior class president, conducts a class meeting. Dallas Roth seems to have some- thing on his mind. We owe our thanks to these men who got us up each morning and deposited us at our homes in the evening. They are as follows: Left side, front to back: Ray Chase, Herman Rothenberger, George Kamstra, Paul Skiles. Right side: David Royer, Clarence Malaska, Bill Fetterhoff, Lloyd Hollingsworth. Mrs. Hamilton, Mrs. Hinesley, and Mrs. Flora prepare the lunches served daily in the cafeteria. Mr. Smith and Mr. McGill, the school janitors, are always on the job with their mops and brooms. OUR SCHOOL BOARD Thinking of the plans for the new elementary school which is now being constructed are (left to right): Mr. Floyd Reynolds, Mr. Austin Suter, Mr. Richard Andrew—trustee, and Mr. Roscoe Shedron. Construc- tion on the building began last fall and it will be completed by the fall of 1957. The one-story, brick-veneered structure will include six class- rooms, a cafeteria, and a playroom. Robert Jarrell and Son of Kirklin are the contractors,- architect is Brunsma and Kashner, Lafayette. The new building will relieve crowded conditions of the present build- ing and will allow for expansion of the various departments. AAARYEVELYN ACORD . . . AND PATIENCE TO HELP seniors % graduation time - , —I m?- I rrsfmrrs , AROUND THE CLOCK In 1945 twenty-three eager first graders, with Mrs. Gheen as our winder and Mr. Hobbs as our timekeeper, started our journey around the clock. The beginners were as follows: Betty Brown, Fred Calhoun, Virginia Cameron, Larry Cohee, Charles Crow, Jerry Dieterle, Nancy Landes, Philip Frank, Mary Gochenour, Donnie Hinesley, Arthur Hufford, Jimmy Hufford, Norma Hufford, Dallas Roth, Keith Rothenberger, Kathryn Wolf, Suzanne Wolf, Doris Smith, Diana Zink, Norma Finney, Howard Hendrickson, Gene Overhalser, and Shirley Walker. Carolyn Kelly soon joined us from Linden compensating for the loss of Betty Brown, who transferred to Pyrmont. In our second lap around the clock, our class was divided with Mrs. Gheen as one hand and Mrs. Fisher as the other. We lost Doris Smith in this lap, but gained Nancy Rodkey from Kilmore and Donna Suel. During the third hour Mrs. Catron, as the main spring, gathered us all together again as one group. We well remember the morning Nancy Rodkey came to school with the news that their house had burned. Phyllis Cooper, Bill Reed, and Betty Brown joined us this year, but Bill did not stay long, leaving in the second semes- ter. We also lost Donna Suel, Diana Zink, and Gene Overhalser. In the fourth grade the clock began to skip a few beats as Mr. Wolfe our hour hand will assure you. We'll never forget the times we had to read, in front of our classmates, the notes intended for someone special, nor the many occasions Mr. Wolfe collected comic books and pieces of bubble gum. Catherine Garrison joined the fun for a while but left before school closed in the spring. Mr. Rule was our big wheel in the fifth grade. That year we welcomed Karen Harshman, Martha Hopper, and Donovan Hufford; but we lost Shirley Walker. Mrs. Crum became our main timepiece in the sixth grade and we bid Donovan Hufford and Karen Harshman good-by. However Ruth Dunk, Naomi Peters, and Ronnie Reed joined us. Beginning our seventh lap around the clock, we called on Mr. Tharp to be our timekeeper. Bertha Skaggs, Arnold Eller, and Tom Tharp enrolled in the class but Bertha withdrew the second semester. During the eighth grade we were saddened by the death of Jerry Dieterle, one of our number from the first hour. Ronnie Reed, Naomi Peters, Karen Harshman also left us,- and Ernest Messick and Russell Gushwa joined us. High School! Just four more years. How time does fly! Mr. and Mrs. Marshall became our sponsors. From Owen came Beverly Snelling, Joe Avery, Ellen Beets, Ronald Brown, Maurice Davies, Jack Hobbs, Irma Hollingsworth, Don Mockerman, Janet Moore, Joann Myer, William Reed, Carl Rohr, Betty Kemmerer, Ruthann Dunk, Barbara Davis, Cleo Woodruff, and Janet Lee. Norman Skiles, Don Brenne- man, John Gochenour, David Knop, Doris Leibert, Edith Metzger, Judith Miller, Joan Shultheis, Carolyn Butler, Marilyn Butler, and Charlene Miller came from Owasco. From other schools came Patricia Katzman, Ken Fickle, Judith Roberts, Larry Reed, Doris Smith, and Barbara Melvin. Larry Reed, Ernest Messick, Tom Tharp, and Janet Lee left us at the end of the year. Finally we were old enough for class sweaters and time showed we had only three more runs around the clock to make. Mr. Marshall took over the position of timekeeper this year. Leona Cross from Wea, Sharon Marley, Carl Hicks, and Jack Hiatt joined us this year, but we lost several of our old friends. Jack Hiatt, Judith Roberts, Norman Skiles, Patricia Katzman, Suzanne Wolf, Charlene Miller, Cleo Woodruff, Carl Hicks, Sharon Marley, and Barbara Melvin departed, leaving us a total enrollment of forty-seven. Father Time was still moving as we began our junior year. Betty Kemmerer and Russell Gushwa left us at this time. The pendulum swung hard and fast all year as we received our class rings, worked on our play and made money for our trip. At last we are seniors and it doesn't seem very long since Time was a young man. Now in our twelfth hour we realize we still have a lot to learn. Even though the editors instructed each correspon- dent to list only the name of an alumnus, if not sure of the work and postoffice address, we know there are still some errors. If class- es do not co-operate in sending an accurate list by mid-September, class editors are helpless. Since each directory page costs approxi- mately $10.00, the seniors and I feel that we should all work to make this as free of mistakes as possible. The class and I suggest that each class secretary or some other class member start a round- robin not later than June first and send us the results by mid-Step- tember.
