Ocvi 56 In the year 1944, twenty-one nervous and excited youngsters started the first fight of a twelve year battle which was to end in victory in 1956. These twenty-one first graders, under General Hobbs, who fought the first battle, with some assistance from Private Gheen were: Christene Bolinger, Frank Calhoun, Arnold Eller, Jiles Glass, Carol Guinn, Russell Gushwa, Donald Hufford, Eileen Katzman, Marlene Long, David Martin, Larry Montgomery, Kenneth Peters, Naomi Peters, Clara Reed, Ronald Reed, Patricia Roth, Duane Royer, Linda Taylor, Russell Ticen, Jerry Weida, and Rex Young. Our second battle was fought under the leadership of two top sergeants, Mrs. Fisher and Mrs. Gheen. During this second battle we gained Nancy Huffer, from Buck Creek, only to lose her after the first semester. We also lost Carol Guinn. On our third grade maneuvers, we again called on Master Sergeant Fisher to help us win. This year we gained Judy Cripe, Robert Galenbach, and Mary Lou Smith, only to lose them at the end of the year. Nancy Huffer rejoined us as well as Velma Suter. At the beginning of our fourth skirmish we called on General Franklin to aid us, and with the help of Second Lieutenants, Wolf and Rule, we gained Jack Pritchard and Junior Ward. After this skirmish we lost David Martin at Jackson, Michigan, and Russell Ticen at Lafayette. After winning the fourth battle with only a few minor casualties. First Lieutenants, Wolfe and Rule, led us to victory in our fifth year. After recovering from injuries sustained in the battle of the year before, Hilda Epp and Wayne Flora joined our regiment. Captain Crum brought us into a fierce battle with the high school, as we were the first class to be placed in a high school battalion. During the sixth battle we had to recruit Helen Bondurant from Frankfort. Captain Crum who had now been promoted to a Lieutenant Colonel, led us in our seventh engagement. Helen Bondurant then moved back to Frankfort while Arnold Eller moved to Flora. We gained only one student this year, Maurice Oglesby. Now a Major, Mrs. Crum led us in our eighth battle to West Lafayette, where we captured Sondra White. We also gained Carolyn Crisswell who was only with us for this year. We also gained a new General, Mr. Tharp. Now with only four battles left and with Colonel Crum we started the climb to triumph. We gained two new regiments. The one from Owen consisted of Carolyn Bell, Sharon Black, Mark Crum, Loretta Devore, Bob Dunk, Florene Dolby, Morris Egelhoff, Linda Flora, Trudy George, Art Gross, John Miller, Ross Milner, Barbara Robison, Betty Sipes, Janell Thorp, and Dick Ticen. The others from Owasco were Ella Cook, Carol Frey, Donald Knop, Gene Mellinger, Donna Neuenschwander, and Claredon Rule. This year we lost Anna and Betty Barns, Ella Cook, and Hilda Epp. Jaenett Mosson entered at the battle of Burlington. Brigadier General Crum was at the head of our tenth encounter. Although we gained only one recruit from Mulberry, Dick Hutchison, we lost five good soldiers, Florene Dolby, Art Gross, Donald Hufford, Marlene Long, and Jerry Reddington. During this battle we had to call on the assistance of another officer, Brigadier General, Nise- wonger from Darlington. Our eleventh year under the direction of Major Generals Irwin and Nisewonger caused us only two casualties. We lost Rowena Carr and Linda Taylor, only to gain Bill Mathews, while Florene Dolby returned for only half of the battle. At this phase of the battle we called upon General Marshall to give us orders. Battle scarred and victory happy, forty tired soldiers faced Operation Senior Year.” We started this battle with fresh hopes and new ideas. We finished this operation only to find that the real battle was just beginning as our sponsors, Mrs. Crum and Mr. Irwin, had often told us.
