We ourselves, should strive for these two qualities in order to hold what is ours from inheritance-freedom. To help keep our freedom we have added, among other qualities, to bravery and strength, education. Only an educated people can understand a democracy and keep it such. Therefore we present to you a story: a story of our educational program-at work and play, our part now, in the big iob of holding our freedom. Geniuses at work! Just Browsing! Ready . . . Set . . . The day was perfect for the take-off. On runway 'l, twenty-three nervous pass- engers said goodbye with many tears to fond relatives and scurried into their seats. 'Phe steward, Mr. Hobbs, fastened their safety belts, for the trip was to be long and sometimes the way would be rough. The pilot, Mrs. Gheen, issued flying instructions to Donald Cox, Tom Beets, Larry DeFord, Harold Eller, Hilda EPP, Carol Finley, Wayne Flora, Audrey Gochenour, Barbara Good, Judy Hackerd, David Hufford, Patricia Hufford, Charles McCoy, Richard Metzger, Richard Miller, William Parr, Mary Jo Rule, Harold Scolley, Herman Skiles, Leona Shively, Charlene Tansey, Paul Walker, and Dick Wangelin. William Parr left us by parachute during the first flight. We took two planes on our next flight, Mrs. Fisher ,manning one and Mrs. Gheen piloting the other. Judy Biesecker ioined us from liner Little Jeff, Julia Jo Bogan from Beard 29, Pat Finney from Squadron Klondike, and Gordon Wagoner from the Ford Constellation in Lafayette. Tom Beets transferred to the Owen Lim- ited and Dick Wangelin left for Dayton, Ohio. During flight 3, piloted by Mrs. Fisher, Herman Skiles left us for Little Jeff, Bob and Donna Waldron came to us from Mulberry, Bernadene Patrick from Pyrmont, and Merlyn Smith also ioined us at the next stop when Mrs. Catron became our pilot. Merlyn Smith left after this flight and Donald Hamm ioined us. Our fifth pilot was Mr. Rule. Hilda Epp and Wayne Flora left us for the next plane because of airsickness. - During the sixth flight Harold Scolley left for the Veedersburg and after we landed Bernadene Patrick boarded the Bringhurst. Mr. Rule prepared us for the last half of our iourney, the first half being completed. Our steward, now Mr. Franklin, told us that this flight might be the hardest of all. During the flight Charles Grider flew in from Mulberry and Leon Sipes also ioin- ed us, but soon moved to Indianapolis and later to Brighton, Michigan. Jim Butz ioin- ed us from the Monticello and Paul Walker boarded the Kempton Special. We now had only four flights left before Destination Graduation would be reach- ed. Our plane stopped to take on passengers from two auxiliary liners. .From Owen came Judy Adams, Tom Beets lioining us for the second timel, Kay Burkhalter, Pat Coleman, Charles Coffman, Charles Davies, Gerald Devore, Norma Dolby, Charles Douglas, Norman Duckworth, Jim Gross, Norman Kemmerer, John Lewis, Alice Mill- er, Carolyn Miller, Lanny Moore, Mary Rohr, Marcia Salmon, Evelyn Scolley, Jim Scott, Terry Shaffer, Jim Waters, Sara Wilkins, Fred Woodruff, and Gerald Clear: from Owasco came Robert Archer, Kenny Butler, Hope Gilman, Charles Greenwood, Bill Kemmer, Jahn Lawson, Maude Leslie, Harold Scolley, and Meredith Skiles. Fred Brown came from Carrollton, Linda Ottinger from Frankfort, Claude Price from Del- phi, Jackie McCoy from the Indianapolis and Bill Joe Smith from Frankfort. Before the flight was over we had lost Judy Adams, Harold Eller, Bill Joe Smith, Fred Woodruff, and Gerald Clear. During the tenth stage of our trip, we lost Maude Leslie, Mary Jo Rule, Leona Shively, Meredith Skiles, and Jim Scott. Jackie McCoy moved to l.aPorte. We were nearing the end of our trip now. Larry Tull came to us from Frankfortp Norma Dolby left, Charles Coffman moved to Frankfort, Charles Grider to Mulberry, and Jim Gross to Forest. Mr. Tharp, our steward at that time, told us to tighten our safety belts and prepare ourselves for our last flight. lt was hard for us to believe that our trip was nearly over, but we boarded the plane with renewed enthusiasm. Ronnie Fisher, from Francesville, ioined our twelfth and last flight, a very busy one. We began to realize that soon our trip would be over and we passengers would be scattered into all walks of life. Our steward, Mr. Marshall, and the co-pilot for the last six years, Mr. Acord, and for two, Mrs. Acord, circled our blue-and-white Car- nation for its final landing. We remembered each flight of our trip-the sunny weather and the rough, the stormy and the fair. As we taxied down the runway with the final aIl-out ringing in our ears, we fifty-one seniors of the 1955 graduating class of Rossville High School realized with mixed emotions of triumph and regret that we had at last reached Destination Graduation and were each equipped for our first solo flight. l LARRY KEITH DeFORD lass President 4, lass Vice-Pres. lg lass Play 3, 4, horus 4, tudent Council 3, .F.A. l- eporterg asketball lp rack l. imbition: Electrical Engineer. 4 'K SENIOR OFFICERS oonoom Pmizicic wAcsoNsR Gordey Student Council Pres. 4, Student Council 1, Class President 2, 37 Latin Club l, 2, 3, 4- Consul 3, High Spot Staff 3, Lars Staff 4, Senior Play 4, Band l, 2, 3, 4, Chorus 3, 4, Latin Contest 2, 3, 4. FFA Many years ago, the American Indian taught our Pilgrim forefathers to fertilize each hill of maize by planting in it a dead fish. Now in schools across the nation boys learn the fundamentals of good farming and land conservation measures. Rossville is proud of her FFA chapter, for it has brought home much honor. The chapter, hav- ing initiated ten this year, now has thirty-three members. Early last July, sponsored by Mr. Ralph Rodkey, twenty boys iourneyed to Racine, Wisconsin, where they vis- ited the J. l. Case factories and warehouses. The judging teams have gained much recognition, going from county, state, and district, to state contests. This year the dairy judging team won first in the county contest, first in the district, first in the state round-up held at Purdue, second in the state milking shorthorn contest, and tenth at the Indiana State Fair. Likewise, the livestock iudging team gives a good account of itself in its achieve- ments. This team won first in the county, tenth in the district, and first in the Tam- worth contest. The latter effort won for them a Tamworth gilt. In the early part of last October, Mr. Acord, Maurice Oglesby, and Mark Crum attended the National FFA Convention held in Kansas. Although the boys derive much pleasure from their membership in thi. organization, their time is spent in learning not only to make the most of the land which is theirs, but also to aid the members of their community when the occasion arises. These boys, along with Mr. Acord and men and boys from the neighborhood, harvested a crop of corn for a farmer whose health prohibited his doing so. Much can be said for an organization which combin- es learning with practical application. They will return Tuesday night. The trip is being sponsored by a chapter honorary member, Ralph Rodkey, of Rossville. For those who want to keep alive their interest in Latin, the Latin Club provides an excellent source of fun, enter- tainment, and information. This year, the Latin Club headed the Easter Convocation and presented a skit to the sectional tourney fans. New members were initiated by being sold as slaves. The climax of the Latin Club year came in April, when the sen- iors welcomed the new members and bid their fond farewell at the annual banquet in the school cafeteria. The 1954 Latin Club banquet featured gods and goddesses of Mt. Olympus. This table honored Minerva. .i :ama, 7' Vi' gf W T7 I Q is 5 1 , Q w I . Q4 W . I . . 2, A 5 if ' , E 'Wh Q arf? CHORUS In the early days of this country the songs chanted by Indian braves might have been very unpleasant and even frightening to us had we heard them. Today, how- ever, our songs are composed with the thought of making enioyable and pleas- ant-sounding music. How fitting then that we should listen to the Rossville High School chorus and glee clubs. Under Mr. Moody's instruction and direction the chorus and glee clubs have given numerous exchange and school concerts, all of which have been very successful. The chorus has steadily improved and is becoming a popular activity with students. We express our appreciation for the fine iob they have done in the name of our school. i Typis-ts-Seated L. to R.: Hope Gil- man, Audrey Gochenour, Linda Ottinger, Barbara Good. He had merely to build a big fire, risk setting his signaling blanket afire, and wave his arms holdin the - , , blanket Uma: he had mi ae- E iZH2Viaisl3.R'cEl5Z! sired effect. However there were several disadvantages to this system. He was not able to send many news items at once and he had to have a fair memory to re- i member all the news of one day, let alone for two weeks. Therefore he could never be sure when his fishing exams were coming up or where the next archery contest was to be held. Modern science has im- proved this method by introducing the newspaper. Our High Spot, an excellent example of this, carries the latest items of interest to our school and the dates of things to come. This in- formation is expertly compiled by the High Spot staff and presented to us in best iournalistic form under the sponsorship of Mrs. Rodkey. The High Spot is indeed an asset to our school. SSS An old lndian proverb tells us that we shouldn't criticize another until we have walked a mile in his moccasins. The Rossville Sunshine Society has walked many miles in this fashion. The purpose of this organization, whose membership totals one hundred and one, is service to others. This year, as every year, the girls collected gifts to give homes for the aged and orphans. The organization contributed to the Riley Fund, which helps provide for the care of crippled children in the Riley Hospi- tal. At Christmas, girls busied themselves with the preparation of baskets, gifts, cards, and personal effects for the people of the community whose holiday spirit might have otherwise not been so high, and the completion of the program for the Christ- mas convocation, held in the Methodist Church. ln many respects, this year is very much like other years, but for some of us this year will stand out above all others. The District convention, the book reviews, the speeches, and the doll-dressing and sales, all add up to a well-rounded, happy year. SSS Officers, standing L. to R.: Carolyn Bell, treasurer, Janet Moore, vice president, Pat Finne , corresponding secretary, Judly Leader, recording secretary, Caro- lyn Miller, president, admire the handiwork of Jan Thorp and Sonnie White on district conven- tion bulletin board. STUDENT COUNCIL Undoubtedly the young Indian boy used to creep up behind a tepee close to the council ring and stare in fas- cinated admiration at the old chiefs as they sat in the peace pow-wow. We can imagine that he dreamed of someday holding one of the honored places in the council circle. Whether the dream is the same or not, we can't tell, but we can feel assured that to be a member of Rossville's student council is unquestionably an honor. The student council has been a very effective tool in making the activ- ities of the year run smoothly and purposefully. Convoca- tions have been sponsored and presented by this group of ten, making the year more enioyable and interesting. Thanks to them for a job performed well.
