S. alive all these years. . .to that wispy essence that has not faded away like smoke into the sky. . .to the enthusiasm for progress that lies within the heart of every student. . . to the spirit that has given us the ability to choose the best. . . to this never dying spirit of the school we dedicate the 1954 LARS. WE DID HAVE OUR SERIOUS MOMENTS . . . Casual observers have thought that for the past twelve years we, the Ross- ville seniors, have led a life of gaiety, with little work or common sense. Appar- ently everyone thought that our only worries were to get that favorite part in the play, to dream of a certain man and wonder whether he would ask us to go to that movie on Saturday night. Our life was made up of jokes, laughter, cheering for the home team, and parties. Sometimes there were tests to slow us down al though we didn't care. But we really did care. We cared so much that our hands shook and we could harly write. We cared, because at the back of our minds were thoughts of the future. Should I go to college or will I be drafted? Should I get a job? Is it hard to get a job? Should I get married now, or will there be another war? We worry and we think: this is the last play, the last party, the last class, and the last time we will all be together. Realizing that the long look ahead takes us years hence when this phase of life will become a maze of shadows, we have recorded it in our book of Rossville memories, the 1954 LARS. The buzz of the saw in the shop. . .the careful experiments in the science room. . .the full house in the library. . .the voices of sweet melody echoing from the music room. . .the peck of typewriters in the typing room. . .those straight seams in homemaking class. . .those daring trips in driver's training class. . .the studious silence of the study hall. . .the rattle of dishes in the cafeteria all go together to create a day at school. The Future Farmers of America have again had a very eventful year and have brought more honors to our school. The livestock judging team deserves a great deal of recognition for its outstanding achievements this past year. Winning first in the county contest, they went to the dis- trict, placing second. It seems that they were due for a drop, because they fell to thirteenth at the Purdue Round-up. The real thrill came when the team went to Indianapolis and placed first in the state contest. The boys and coach were all smiles as they came home with their electric clocks and fountain pens. The team then ended its livestock judging career by plac- ing fifth in the national contest at Chicago. The FFA boys again sold pop at all home basketball games. Also they increased their treasury considerably by selling subscriptions to THE FARM QUARTERLY. Too, the chapter div- ided itself into two teams for a pest contest. Rossville Livestock Judging Team Places 5th at Chicago The Rossville 4-H Club entry in the International Livestock Expos- ition in Chicago over the weekend made a commendable showing, it was reported yesterday. The Clinton County team placed fifth in the nationwide live stock judging contest with 1,607 points. Rossville placed second in the judging contest on horses and Maurice Oglesby, Rossville, placed fourth in the individual contest. INDIANAPOLIS — Rossville’s livestock judging team scored 1,711 points out of a possible 1,950 to win the grand championship at the state fair here Monday. Ninety-two boys on 23 teams from over the state competed. The team ranked first In the judging of hogs, second in sheep, and fourth in beef cattle. The teams placed three rings of hogs, three of cattle and two of sheep. Members of the winning team are Rolland Crow, Dale Long, Maurice Oglesby and Jess Shively. The 1953-54 season has found the Rossville Sunshine Society, in one of its busiest years. Two girls attended state SSS camp last June. On October 19 the society traveled to Zionsville to install a new Sunshine Society. They also initiated thirty-four members into the R. H. S. so- ciety, which now has a total membership of ninety-six. A large group attended the district convention at Lebanon and the state convention at Wabash. The girls gave a Silver Tea to celebrate the Silver Anniversary of R. H. S. Sunshine and in the spring a Mother-Daughter Tea was given with the installation of new officers. The girls, under the guidance of Mrs. Crum, spread Sunshine into the lives of others by helping the county societies buy a TV light and coffee urn for the Parkview home at Frank- fort, sending cards and gifts to the sick and needy, giving Christmas treats to grades 1-6, and contributing to the Riley Fund, a state project. They also purchased a new flag and help- ed pay for a new magazine rack for the school assembly. The cabinet was made up of Kay Barn- hart, Maralee Brenneman, Barbara Good, Pat Finney, Clara Reed, and Sylvia Gushwa. The Latin Club, sponsored by Mrs. Rodkey, had a busy year from the initiation of twen- ty-six new members in October to their last meeting, a Roman Banquet given in the spring to welcome prospective members. Two enjoyable meetings were the explanation of our cal- endar in January and the book review, BEN HUR, given by Pat Hufford. They traveled to Western High School on December 1 1 for an exchange pro- gram. They gave a Christmas concert in the gymnasium for the public. The band played for a Spring Festival at Rossville and then, along with other county schools, journeyed to Frank- fort for the annual County Spring Festival We wish to express our thanks to Mr. Moody and the twenty-one members of the band for playing at ball games and pep sessions, and for providing music for the junior and senior plays. LET'S ALL SING AS THE BIRDIES SING . . . The chorus, with fifty-four members, has participated in many activities this year. Their first performance was given for the student body in the assembly. They gave an exchange Christmas program with Western High School. After singing for the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter programs, they took part in the spring festivals at Rossville and Frankfort. An octette, consisting of Rowena Carr, Carolyn Miller, Margie Dunk, Nancy Huffer, Phil Carr, Dick Hutchison, Gerald Stevens, and Gene Mellinger, and a men's glee club were or- ganized. The student council has very successfully fulfilled its purpose this year. It has planned fine convocations, church programs, and pep sessions as well as arranging an intra-mural basketball schedule and organizing a bowling league. The student council is constantly on the look out for any defect in the school program that might be improved. AND BACK TO THE SHELVES THEY GO . . . Probably the busiest and most thickly populated place in the whole school is the library. The librarians were indeed very busy keeping the library in order. These girls have given very freely of their services in order that the students might enjoy the library more fully. Each girl serves as librarian for a particular period. This book, the 1954 LARS, was not planned and put to- gether in one day. It has re- quired much time, labor, and patience on the part of each and every member of the staff. The planning of the dummy, collecting money from patrons, taking pictures, preparing the alumni direc- tory, and selling subscriptions are all symbolic of the work required to make this book possible. REMEMBER NAMES MAKE NEWS . . . The staff members of HIGH SPOT are constantly on the lookout for material that will arouse the interest.of the students. Published every three weeks, HIGH SPOT contains many interesting articles as well as jokes and gossip. Every noon of the day that the paper was issued almost every student had his nose in the news, even while he ate. This is proof enough that the diligent work of the editors, re- porters, and publishers was worth while. At the end of the first semester, a change in the staff took place. Tom Beets, editor, and Terry Shaffer, business manager, withdrew; Amy Cable automatically took over the editor's position. Kenneth Butler and Bill Kemmer joined the group as reporters, and the staff elected Evelyn Scolley, associate editor, and Mary Rohr, bus- iness manager. ffii MR. IN MEMORIAM . . . Mr. Earl Hamilton, having served six years as janitor of the school, succumbed to leukemia in December. A rather quiet man and very con- scientious, Mr. Hamilton would do almost any- thing in his power to help somebody out. He spent a lot of his time working on wooden structures around the building and was thought of as the school carpenter. The students, teach- ers, and all connected with the school certainly miss his kind and helpful hand and will keep memories of him for many years. Bob Smock Yellow monsters were their charges . . . I. to R.: Mr. Chase, Mrs. Roth, Mrs. Purcell, Mr. Hurley, Mr. Malaska, Mr. Rofhenberger, Junior Milner, Robert Bell, Paul Skiles. IT MUST BE PAY DAY . . . Mr. Richard Andrew, better known as Dick, is a familiar figure around the Rossville School, for he considers the administration of the school one of the important functions of the many duties of a trustee. A graduate of the high school in Cola, Iowa, Mr. Andrew has been generous in providing any needed equipment as long as he feels it will benefit the students. Under his supervision the appearance of the school has improved immeasurably and the utilitarian value of the school plant has been enhanced. Career-wise he has the experience of a farmer, office clerk, and salesman to help him tackle the problems of this position. He is married and has two sons in grade school. I CECIL THARP Mr. Tharp has completed his third year as principal at R. H. S. Although he is very busy, he is always ready to help any student who comes to him for advice. He co-sponsors the senior class and is the originator and sponsor of the Student Council. Mr. Tharp graduated from Indiana Uni- versity. ALICE RODKEY Mrs. Rodkey probably can be credited as starting more good things at R. H. S. than any other teacher. She is responsible for moving the library to a new and better location, developing the HIGH SPOT, reviving the LARS, starting a new journalism class, and organizing the Latin Club. Receiving a degree from DePauw University, she teaches English, Latin, and journalism. RALPH ACORD Mr. Acord has brought many honors to R. H. S. by his excellent job of coaching the judging teams. He has also proved himself successful in advising the FFA boys and teaching vocational agriculture. In addition to all this he still finds time to sponsor the junior class. He is a graduate of Purdue University. HOWARD MILLER Mr. Miller spends most of his time in the shop, teaching his classes how to make mechanical drawings and construct different articles of furniture. We also recognize him as a fine fresh- man and junior high basketball coach. Mr. Miller is the seventh grade sponsor and a graduate of Indiana State Teachers College. HELEN MARSHALL Mrs. Marshall is one of Rossville's most charm- ing teachers. The senior boys claim that they never give the correct answers in English class because her charm frustrates them. She keeps busy by teaching English, directing the junior and senior plays, and co-sponsoring the freshman class. She is a graduate of Central Normal College. MARYEVELYN ACORD Mrs. Acord is always busy. She plans meals for the cafeteria, teaches health and physical education, and makes sure everyone uses a thimble and sews a straight, true seam in her homemaking classes. While rearing a son, she also finds time to give her guidance to the junior class. Her alma mater is Ball State Teachers College. TROY FOX Mr. Fox is an old timer on the Rossville faculty. Probably his chief concern is keeping dis- cipline in the assembly. Each year he assigns seats in the assembly to each member of high school and makes certain that every student minds his own business. Mr. Fox also teaches science and co-sponsors the senior class. He has his degree from Purdue University. CECIL CRUM Mrs. Crum always tries to find the good traits in every individual. Each class strives to do their best, so that on the night of commencement, she can say, This is the best class that graduated from Rossville. A graduate of Southwest Missouri State Teachers College, she teaches mathematics and sponsors the sophomore class and Sunshine Society. ALLEN NISWONGER Mr. Niswonger joined the R. H. S. faculty this year as head athletic coach and a teacher of health, biology, and driver's training. Finding his knowledge of and interest in magic didn't work on the basketball floor, he gave up his career as an amateur magician. He is a graduate of Purdue University. JAMES MONTGOMERY Mr. Montgomery, school treasurer, has several interests as a member of the faculty. He special- izes, however, in developing accuracy and speed in every member of his typing class. Mr. Mont- gomery is also the B-team coach and sponsor of tne eighth grade class. He acquired his additional education from Central Normal College. KENNETH MARSHALL Mr. Marshall is a specialist in history and bookkeeping. When it comes to remembering important dates in history and studying the prin- ciples of debiting and crediting in bookkeeping, he is unbeatable. The trade mark of Mr. Marshall is his pointing stick, which he has in his hand most of the time. He is the freshman sponsor and a graduate of Purdue. FRANCES MARTIN Mrs. Martin, who admits that she wouldn't be teaching except for a shortage of teachers, has started the younger classes on a music and art career. The pupils are glad that this friendly, cheer- ful woman is teaching again. She graduated from the School of Music at Northwestern University. JEWELL RULE Mr. Rule does a fine job in preparing the grade students for their big step from grade school to junior high. He is also recognized as the person who starts training our basketball teams on their way to victory. He teaches the fifth and sixth grade classes and coaches the fifth and sixth grade basketball team. He graduated from Central Normal College. WILLIAM MOODY FAWN MOORE Mr. Moody joined the faculty this year and with him came new ideas for a better music de- partment. He is responsible for the formation of the Men's Glee Club and an Octette. Helping the school spirit, he started band yells for the ball games. Director of the band and chorus, he graduated from the University of Minnesota and received a Masters from Butler. Mrs. Moore is a newcomer at Rossville this year. She has capably taken over the position of Mr. Cox as fifth and sixth grade teacher. Her students indeed enjoy workina with her and appreciate her patience and guidance. Mrs. Moore claims Central Normal College as her source of advanced education. xrepha McDaniel Mrs. McDaniel, a graduate of Ball State Teachers College, has returned for her second year of teaching fourth graders. They are glad to have the opportunity to work with such a wonderful person who demands exacting, thorough work of each student. HAZEL THARP Mrs. Tharp makes a center of interest for her second grade by the use of this interesting flannel- graph. Having attended Blaker's College, now affiliated with Butler University, she not only trains her pupils for a trip into the future but also manages her principal husband and two sons. MABEL CATRON Mrs. Catron has been with the Rossville faculty for several years. She has developed a skill of working with her third grade class which is hard to beat. The class in turn likes her and will take memories of her far into the future. Mrs. Catron received her advanced education from Ball State Teachers College. CATHERINE SHEPARD Mrs. Shepard does a fine job in adapting the first grade students to school life. With her pleasant smile and her kindness and patience, she soon creates friendship between her and her pupils and prepares them for the years ahead. How well we remember our grade years and the anticipation of recess. Recess meant fun on the playground where we could make friends, play games, swing, and slide. Yes, we were glad to attain the dignity of upperclassmen, but it was with a pang of regret that we no longer were able to enjoy the playground. It is one of the fine legacies that we leave to youngsters of an- other generation. As we watch the 179 grade students of the current school year relax from studies, it is as if we tore a page from our own life's history. It was in the fall of 1942 when twenty-three wide-eyed youngsters climbed the stairs and walked into the first grade room. These students were Carol Bolinger, Mary Ellen Harshbarger, Neal Gaylor, Ward Garrett, Patsy Wetzel, Merrill Gaylor, Rolland Crow, Bob Hinesley, Dale Long, Joe Hobbs, Marina Frank, Carolyn Smith, Marjorie Gochenour, Barbara Meador, Gladys Yoder, Marshall Evans, Janice Wet- zel, Robert Epp, Marilyn Rodenbarger, Norma Yoder, Gary Stores, Ruth Epp, and Marjorie Brovont. Miss Cochran was our teacher that first year. The class was divided into two rooms the second year, Mrs. Gheen teaching one section and Mrs. Fisher the other. We added Gordon Stevenson and Marlene Katzman to the class roll but lost Marshall Evans, Marilyn Rodenbarger, and Gary Stores. The third year we welcomed three new students, Clarence Reavis, Gene Colli- ver, and Norman Wangelin, while losing Ward Garrett, Neal Gaylor, and Marlene Katzman. Our membership stayed the same the fourth year by bidding farewell to Caro- lyn Smith and Norman Wangelin and enrolling John and Sylvia Gushwa. We were very fortunate the fifth year because we didn't lose a member and were happy to have Donald Service with us that year. Mr. Rule guided us successfully through the sixth grade. We were joined that year by Jack Reed and left by Joe Hobbs, Donald Service, Janice Wetzel, and Carol Bolinger. On the seventh step our membership dropped to nineteen by losing Jack Reed. Did we ever think we were something walking through the high school halls! As eighth graders we welcomed Eugene Bailey, Eleanor Hopper, Tommy Mill- er, and Paul Sipes and bade farewell to Gene Colliver. Upon entering high school we lost Paul Sipes, Tommy Miller, and John Gush- wa; but nearly doubled our class membership by students from Owen, Clay, and Warren townships. Our new additions were Don Kressley, John Koble, Julian Bell, Don Chittick, Jack Reed, Earl Unger, Mary Jane Unger, Everett Freels, Javonna Car- ney, Floyd Oaks, Gladys Scolley, Marilyn Rodenbarger, Mary Ticen, Maralee Brenne- man, Ralph Bradshaw, Kay Barnhart, Amy Cable, Sue Kingery, Martha Ticen, Betty Crum, and Anna Rae and Sue Monroe. During our freshman year we lost Robert Epp, Clarence Reavis, and Anna Rae and Sue Monroe,- and gained Sylvan Eller and Margie Dunk. We entered the sophomore class welcoming Mickey McCoy and Dick Knight. Ruth Epp left us here and Don Price entered in the last semester. On the eleventh step Jack Reed, Barbara Meador, Gladys Yoder, Ralph Brad- shaw, Norma Yoder, and Dick Knight left us,-while Judy Crum, Phil Carr, Don Mills, Gerald Stevens, and Marilyn Widmer joined us. Norman Sterling and Edis Baker journeyed with us a few months. Warren Messick and Gerald Mosson entered our class in the last semester. Everett Freels, Mickey McCoy, Don Mills, Marilyn Widmer, and Sylvan Eller abandoned us on the last step and no one entered. So on May 4, 1954, thirty-seven remain to receive their diplomas. We listen intently to our commencement speech, delivered by Dr. Winters, realizing that this is the last word of advice we will re- ceive at R. H. S. As we branch out into life, we will carry out our motto, Climb though the rocks be rugged, and keep our class flower, the red and white rose, and class colors, cardinal and white, as tokens of memory of our school days.
