foreword So Ghat U)e (Day ‘Remember - - Our trustees who make the school possible—the teachers who have helped us through twelve years of work—those sophisticated seniors—our attempts to excel on Broadway—the jolly juniors, silly sophomores, green freshmen, and all the grades—the thrill of taking timed writings—tootin' that trumpet in band—study hall with its continual buzz—the FHA and band's chili supper—the senior paper drives—typing the HIGH SPOT and the last minute rush for news—the FFA trip and its conventions—Jerry's effort to become august —the Sunshine conventions and those long bus trips—Kenny's making that last second shot in the West Side game—spring of '52 when a young man's fancy turns to—graduation (?). Music Music and Art Seniors So Uhat U)e (Day ‘Remember - - The days when we were in the first grade. Twelve august seniors were once timid beginners with Mildred Cochran as teacher, in the present first grade room. They were as follows: Barbara Briggs, Jerry Cornwell, Myrtle Davis, Patricia Dunk, Betty Eller, Wayne Gochenour, Virginia Long, Marjoree Moore, Dewey Pritsch, Charles Yoder, John McDaniels, and Howard McGill. Barbara Briggs left the group in two weeks, but Helen Buck transferred from Buck Creek to compensate for the loss. Other fellow classmates in the grades were Phyllis Conrad, Shirley Hughes, Shirley Sut- er, Dana Branson, John Gaylor, Tom Skiles, Ronald Gaylor, Kenneth Bowerman, and Marjorie Huf- fer (first grade); Eugene Smith, Mary Jo Evans, Dick Evans, Jay Delp, Virginia Bougher, Harold Williams and Rosella Clawson (second grade); Reba Lampkin (third); and Billy Joe Crider, Donald Vinard, and Edwin Colliver (fourth). Now that I am older, I wonder why one or two of us were always sitting on the benches in the hall. It must have been that they were warmer than our seats in the class room. As we continued through school, we gained new class members. In our second year Carolyn Mull transferred from Wea and Maribelle Crow came from Beard; the fifth year Kenneth Bieseck- er from Michigantown and Richard Reavis from Little Jeff; the seventh year Donald Pritchard en- rolled from Little Jeff and Jim Reed from Owen township. Our class roll increased our freshman year when the following transferred from Owen: Barbara Briggs, Martha Ticen, Shirley Carlyle, Norman Lee, Ann Kemmerer, John Kemmerer, Arlene Timmons, Phyllis Smart, Harold Smart, Lelah Unger, Melvin Unger, Max Kressley, Gerald Wilkins, and Steven Shaffer,- from Pyrmont, Carolyn Pearson and Leroy Holsinger,- from Owasco, Donald Hufford, Helen Kemmer, and Phyllis Rule. During our freshman year Leona Moore came to join us from Wabash and Jim Garrison from Chicago; Harley Miller from Lapel, Charles Miller from Monitor, and Jim Hopper from Morrison- ville, Illinois, became members of our class as sophomores; Margaret Cripe from Cerro Gordo, Illi- nois, became a member as a junior; and Jim Tharp enrolled from Darlington as a member of our present senior class. The classmates that we lost during high school were: Doris Shively, Dorothy Shively, Leroy Holsinger, Richard Reavis, Leona Moore, Maribelle Crow, Ann Kemmerer, John Kemmerer, Don- ald Hufford, Helen Kemmer, Jim Reed, Steven Shaffer, Arlene Timmons, Harold Smart, Phyllis Smart, Jim Hopper, and Jim Garrison, but twenty-eight of the group won the coveted diploma. Barbara Briggs transferred to Flora at the end of the first semester. As juniors taking American history, we were very fortunate to have with us, Hubert Hutch- ing, a German youth. He had many very interesting comments about our way of living. Our class officers and sponsors were: freshman—sponsor, Mr. Fox; president, Steven Shaffer; vice president, Donald Hufford; secretary, Leroy Holsinger; treasurer, Marjoree Moore; sophomore —sponsor, Mr. Montgomery; president, Norman Lee; vice president, Jerry Cornwell; secretary, Barbara Briggs; treasurer, Gerald Wilkins; junior—sponsors, Mr. Joseph and Mrs. Rodkey; presi- dent, Jerry Cornwell; vice president, Gerald Wilkins; secretary, Phyllis Rule; and treasurer, How- ard McGill. Yes, we record this so that we may remember the names of our fellow students, but more than just names, our class meetings or rather arguments, our efforts as salesmen, our paper driv- es, and our class plays. Kenneth Biesecker gives to Phil Lee one half of a dollar providing that he keeps it. Barbara Briggs wills her pink angora sweater to Winifred Purcell if Donnie doesn't mind. To Mary Ellen Harshbarger, Helen Buck wills her black hair providing that she doesn't dye it red. Jerry Cornwell bequeaths his ability to go steady to Don Chittick providing that he can first hook that certain girl. To Bill Yoder, Wayne Gochenour leaves Joy providing he takes good care of her. Shirley Carlyle gives her seat in the typing room to Joyce Kingery if she smiles while sitting there. Max Kressley gives the last three periods for sleep to Jim Scott. To Doris Eller, Margaret Cripe wills her sleepy eyes on Monday morning. Myrtle Davis leaves her seat in the assembly to Hope Gilman providing Tommy Skiles still has the same seat next year. Lonnie Lawson wills his black curly hair to any boy with a crewcut. To all the underclassmen Norman Lee bequeaths his ability to keep his desk neat. Patricia Dunk leaves her seat in the study hall to anyone who will study as hard as she did. To Ronald Gaylor, providing that he doesn't get any sloppier than he is, John McDaniel be- queaths his ability to play pool. Betty Eller gives a bobby pin to Jesse Shively so he can keep his hair out of his eyes. Virginia Long wills her shorthand book to anyone who needs it. Providing he uses it for something other than a bed, Howard McGill wills his seat in the study hall to Gary Kite. Harley Miller leaves his curly hair to the Negro servant, and the poor soul that gets that part in any class play. Dewey Pritsch gives to Marshall Sheets one Hot Rod book if he doesn't use it to hop up his car. To Norma Yoder, providing she keeps it short, Carolyn Mull wills her short hair. Carolyn Pearson gives her English workbook to George Burkhalter, providing he makes as many errors. Donald Pritchard wills his physics book to anyone who is interested in becoming a genius. On the night of our junior play everything went off smoothly until in the last act when the sound effects crew switched their cues and a shot alarmed the cast two pages ahead of time. Gerald and Norman will never forget how Marjoree really slapped them in the advertising skit. For once Mrs. Rodkey agreed the act was realistic. They had one bake sale and sold ice cream at all the home basketball games as well as participating in other money-making projects. Socially, they had one party at Winifred Purcell's (Oh! that hay ride!); athletically nine boys represented them on the squads. The big event of the year was the class play, directed by Mrs. Marshall, in April. Other officers were: vice president, Phil Lee; secretary, George Burkhalter; and treasurer, Tom Skiles. They held a successful bake sale in October and a certain boy proved to be an ex- cellent cake baker. In November they enjoyed a skating party at Frankfort. Five of the sophomore boys played basketball and Marjorie Gochenour was one of the cheer leaders. For the library ded- ication program, Mary Ellen Harshbarger, Rolland Crow, Marjorie Gochenour, Sue Kingery, Dale Long, Jack Reed, and Don Chittick presented the one act play, A CASE FOR BOOKS. FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA The Future Farmers of America is a national organization of over 300,000 members and the boys of the Rossville chapter are proud to be a part of the organization. Members must be en- rolled in vocational agriculture or have taken all the vocational agriculture that is offered in their school. Our officers were: president, Harley Miller; vice president, Phil Lee; secretary, George Burkhalter; treasurer, Harold Austin; sentinel, Rolland Crow; and adviser, Ralph Acord. We would like to list a few of the activities which the chapter has carried on during the past year. In 1950 the chapter took a five-year lease on eighteen acres near Sedalia. Profits from a to- mato crop enabled us to balance our books and early in the spring of '51 to take a four-day trip through the Smoky Mountains. This year we had corn and wheat on our acreage, and with the money made we bought five gilts. George Burkhalter with a Chester White, Russell Long with a Berkshire, Jesse Shively with a Hampshire, and Francis Ward and Robert Archer each with a Duroc formed the beginning of our FFA gilt chain. One of the highlights of the year was our Father and Son Banquet which was served by the FHA girls. In this manner the boys tried to tell their dads and guests about their activities and to show in some small way how much they appreciated their help. Ralph Yohe of Prairie Farmer staff showed pictures of and commented on his recent trip to Europe. They held seven regular meetings this year as well as a special initiation service on November 13. Forty-eight attended the district convention at Waynetown last fall, and many went to the state convention at Jeff in Lafayette in April. Another spring activity was a Mother-Daughter Tea. The girls carried out their motto, Others ' by sending gifts to Dorothy Seest, an R H.S. alum- na who now teaches in Japan. Residents of Cary Home and of an old peoples' home were also recipients of gifts. Too, they made nut cups for Junior Red Cross and sold popcorn at the Crispus Attucks game for the band's benefit. Officers were: president, Marjoree Moore; vice president, Kay Barnhart; treasurer, Ruth Sloan; corresponding secretary, Margaret Cripe; recording secretary, Marcia Salmon; sponsor, Mrs. Crum. Carolyn Mull had charge of candy sales and Carolyn Pearson of the ice cream stand each noon in the cafeteria. RODKEY Third row: BILL YOUNG, DON WAMPLER, CHESTER FLORA, RONALD GAYLOR, and HOWARD McGILL The HIGH SPOT, published every other week, proved very popular with the students. The purpose of the paper was to create a strong school spirit other than a strong class spirit. The junior English class collected the news, and the advanced typing class did the mechanical work. Members of the staff were as follows: editor, Doris Eller,- assistant editor, Phil Lee,- exchange editors, Tom Skiles and Ronald Gaylor,- business managers, Marjoree Moore and Shirley Carlyle; art editor, Dorothy Spence,- reporters-Don Wampler, Lila Jo Dunk, Annettie Good, Joyce Avery' Chester Flora, Bill Young, Ruth Sloan and Shirley Hufford; and typists—Marjoree Moore, Shirley Carlyle, Helen Buck, Lelah Unger, Barbara Briggs, Pat Dunk, Myrtle Davis, Martha Jane Ticen, Phyllis Rule, Margaret Cripe, and Howard McGill. The mere thought of being excused from classes, to work on the dummy, however, lightened the burden somewhat for the editor. It is the sincere hope of the editor, sponsor, and class that this 1952 edition will recapture, to some degree, the dream that former editors had for R. H. S. We know full well that Olive (Miller) Bantz '23, Esther (Sheffler) Lyle '24, Martha (Hedderick) Harsh- barger '25, Alice (White) Rodkey '26, Ora Plue '27, and Roy Reavis '28 will appreciate this book and all the effort it represents. As a staff we're very grateful for their inspiration as well as for the assistance of all alumni and friends. The members of the staff who have worked earnestly gathering material for the annual were: Norman Lee, editor; Margaret Cripe, assistant; Jerry Cornwell, business manager, Jim Tharp, Martha Ticen, Carolyn Pearson, assistants; Kenneth Biesecker, sports editor; Melvin Unger, assis- tant; John McDaniel, photography editor; Harley Miller, assistant; Phyllis Rule, activities editor; Betty Eller, class editor; Lelah Unger, assistant; Shirley Carlyle, alumni editor; Marjoree Moore, Bar- bara Briggs, and Howard McGill, typists. LATIN CLUB Latin Club is a comparatively new organization around R. H. S., as it was organized last year by Mrs. Rodkey. All students who have completed at least one year of Latin are eligible for mem- bership, which for this school year totaled fifty-two. The officers were: Consul, Shirley Hufford; Pro-consul, Annettie Good; Scriba, Marjorie Go- chenour; and Quaestor, Pat Hufford. Mrs. Rodkey is our sponsor. We had our meetings once every six weeks. Ruth Sloan's book review of QUO VADIS for the January meeting was typical of our programs. Plans also included a traditional Roman banquet at the end of the year and attending as a group the showing of the movie QUO VADIS. BAND First row. BAND AND CHORUS The band, which met five periods each week and also rehearsed each Monday night, play- ed at all home games and made several other public appearances. Through the co-operation of Mr. Tharp, teachers, students (especially F.H.A. girls), and the Band Boosters, the band is now in a sound financial condition. Mr. Wilmer Good is president of Band Boosters and Martha J. Ticen is the student secretary for the band, which has forty-six members. The chorus, with a personnel of forty-five, met five times a week. Mary Helen Rohr and Dorothy Spence were accompanists. They made their initial appearance at the Thanksgiving ser- vice and also furnished special music for graduation exercises. Much credit is due Mr. Maxson for the success of these two organizations. The officers were president, Jerry Cornwell; secretary, Helen Buck; and sponsor, Mr. Tharp. Other members were: freshmen, Alice Miller and Gordon Wagoner; sophomores, Julian Bell and Marjorie Gochenour; juniors, Shirley Hufford and Don Wampler; and seniors, Norman Lee. So Z3hat LOe GTay ‘Remember - - A Rossville man, a fellow who is a good clean sport; who is respectful and courteous to the coaches and officials; who can win without boasting and lose without complaining; who doesn't let his teammates down by breaking training; who tries to do to the best of his ability the things he is told by his coach; who tries to set an example of sportsmanship to the rest of his school; who shows loyalty and honesty not only on the ball floor but also in his everyday classes. This is how we remember a Rossville man. Yell Leaders-BARBARA BRIGGS and MARJORIE GOCHENOUR. Shown on opposite page. Top row, i to R: DONALD WAMPLER, KENNY BIESECKER, and NORMAN LEE. Many peoule had floured that Rossville would hold the ball on the Indianapolis team to hold down the score, but instead the under dor Hornets played right along with them—and still held down the acore to the point that Attucks’ 57 points was their lowest of the aeason. Mr. Joseph admitted that he had thought of the control type of game. He’s glad. now. of course, that he didn’t think too much about it. A lot of the credit for the Rossville showing should go to Nor- man Lee for his excellent defensive work, George Burkhalter for his general floor play and aggressiveness, Phil Wampler and Jim Tharp for their offensive prowess, and Phil Lee for hia headwork In figuring out certain moves of the Attucks. But all in all. it sums up to the fact that bhe Hornets were a smooth hard-working team that suffered only from a lack of height. And that height made a difference.
