Burns since coming to Ross- ford as Superintendent of Schools has exhibited much interest in education and the School System's welfare. Under his and the School Board's direction, the High School has begun a building pro- gram to meet the increased enrollment which in years to come will become larger and larger. But as head of the Administration, Mr. Burns has done much toward making Rossford well prepared for the increase, not only in the High School, but in the entire Rossford School System. Changes in the administrative struc- ture, salary increases, and improvements of the physical plant are factors in the High School's development achieved by Mr. Burns in his years here. We who are leaving know that our brothers, sisters, and our friends who continue after us will be well prepared tor life, because of the fine leadership that has made the school system here at Rossford one of the finest in the state of Ohio. A.,, WM Superintendent, G. H. Burns oarcl of Earl lewis, President Dan Knorek, Vice President Irving Richards Principal, Building on the solid base created in the past by able leadership, a tar-sighted School Board, and a devoted faculty, Rosstord High School has made unprecedented progress in seven years under the direction of Principal, E. E. Andrews. ln his seven years as principal of Rosstord High School, Mr. Andrews has worked hard to build the academic standards and to improve the physical appearance ofthe high school campus. glclucafion E. E. Andrews Besides supervising the academic responsibilities of the school, Principal Andrews along with Mrs. Andrews carried on a very active social lite during the year attending Basketball and Football games, dances, and special events which took place during the school year. It is through this social lite of our principal that we as students get to know Mr. Andrews not only as an administrator but as a person. Work on the 1957 Maroon and Gray started in the fall of 1956, when newly-picked editor Tom Brown and his staff began to plan the year- book you now read. Work went on steadily throughout the school year, as the staff met and conquered things that were so new to them, copy and pictures. We worked hard. And we're proud of this '57 Maroon And Gray. We think it's the best words-and-pictures account of Rossford High to date. Diplomas will be presented to l8 from the Academic, 15 in the Industrial Arts Department, 15 in the Commercial De- partment, and 12 students will be grad- uated in the General Field. This year's seniors have seen the beginning of an era of growth which is destined to make Rossford High School one of the foremost schools in the Northwestern Ohio Area. ln later years, when their minds are far from high school life and their hands are busy with briefcases, tools, and dishes, they may look back with pride upon the powerful traditions of excellence in social, athletic, and scholarship activities that they are leaving to this High School. Cyan .jshalory gzedkm ell Bal' The Meditations of a senior upon being requested to write a class history. Why did we have to study history? History wasn't made until ours, the class of '57 started to do things. That was in September 1953, when we entered high school as freshmen. We had come together from Rossford's three Jr. Hi Schools, St. Mary's, St. Cyril, and Rossford Jr. Hi. Three distinct groups at first, but soon to be molded into a strong and industrious class. Elections of our class officers was our first undertaking as a class and we chose persons who started to lay the foundation for our four short years at Rossford High. Tom Brown was the first President of the class of '57, Jim Rakovan was our Vice President, Violet Ferguson was Secretary, and Judy Lehner served as Treasurer of a treasury that was to grow and grow. As freshmen, we, even before school started, let it be known that we were a group not to be surpassed by the ordinary, as six freshman boys were on the Varsity Football Squad in late August. These boys along with their male class- mates formed a Freshman Football Team that was undefeated by all comers. As the year progressed we were to be the first class in Rossford High history to have a basketball team of our own with a regularly scheduled season and, as was to become customary, we won and won and won. In the spring of our freshman year, Stan Weber, new as we were to Rossford High, announced there would be a Varsity Track Team. The class of '57 came to his aid and became the backbone of Rossford's first track team in many a year. We con- tinued to be the backbone of the track team until the day we graduated. Take a look at this and see why we are proud - - out of fourteen events in outdoor track, the class of '57 as freshman held by themselves, or as a team, nine track team records. Five members of our class received Varsity letters in track that spring, while one received a letter in Varsity Baseball. Yes, we started out strong as Freshman with 36 boys and 24 girls for a total of sixty. .S,0f7A0ll'l0l'e eal' Then with an eventful first year under our belts, we stormed into our second year with that same '57 spirit. Seventeen out of thirty-eight boys were out for Varsity Football and while only two started the first game before the season was hardly started, seniors and iuniors began to lose their iobs to mem- bers of the fighting '57. Eight out of seventeen earned Letters. This year our class saw the turning point in Rossford's history. Glenwood and Lime City School Districts which had formerly sent their high school students to Perrysburg High School began to send their students to Rossford. We re- ceived from this area boys who were a credit to our class. We also came to realize that we could be the last small class in Rossford's proud history. In this year we not only saw the beginning of an era of growth but we were on the ground floor at the start of the Rossford High Student Council. But small or not, we of the class of '57 started Rossford back on the road to success in basketball, a sport that for a few years before us had been in darkest state that it had been in the history of the school. The reserve team of our sophomore year was of the highest caliber in this part of Ohio, and as usual we had a winning season. In the spring ot that year the class ot '57 came through again for Coaches Stan Weber and Myron Long, turning out in force for track and baseball. Our class officers for our second year in Rossford High were still laying the foundation. Eddie Fuzzy Reiter was elected president, while Tom Brown held down the vice-presidency, Carol Lee Anderson was secretary, and Judy Lehner served her second term as our class treasurer. unior Cfadd Ofhcerd A ,vl- unior CALM T. Wolfe, CJ aaa .jshalorg Then starting on a toundation that we had lain for ourselves, we in our third year at Rossford High elected Ron Hetman as our president, Gary Davenport, vice-president, Caroline Pennese as our secretary, and showing our faith in the fine iob she was doing we again elected Judy Lehner as our class treasurer. Our class again paved the way tor another fine football season, and as we gained steam, basketball season started, confidence reigned high in our minds for we knew the boys of '57 would come through and to no great surprise to our class, Rossford High had its first winning season in more years than we like to mention. After basketball season the class of '57, our class, produced one of the finest class plays ever to come out of Rossford High, lSo we were toldl Down To Earth remember the laughter then the pride that you felt in that play, yes, just one of the fine things that our class did in our high school days. Other things that will remain in memory were our J-Hop and the highly successful Junior Senior Ball that we worked at so hard. .ggnior mmoriea Senior may Then at long last for some and lust a short time for others we were the seniors of Rossford High. Our last year was beyond doubt our best, in more than one field. Although we suffered the only losing season in the history of our class in football, we gained more than we lost. Mr. Ed Knecht will be long remembered by the class of '57. He in his first and only year at Rossford was to suffer with us as it was the one and only losing season he had as a head football coach. But our class as others will agree, knew that if Lady Luck would not have been against us and he would not have started with only a portion of ol '57's manpower, he along with us would have kept his slate clean. And again an outstanding class play was given by our class. Come Out Of The Closet was high on the list of Rossford High's best plays. Basketball season can well be called a iob well done by '57, as the first six on the Varsity Team were members of our class. And they carried the banner higher than any Rossford team had in a good number of years. Winning and winning until they suffered one of the biggest upsets in O-hio High School basketball in the Regional Tournament at Tiffin, Along this trail of wins we beat the state's number one team, so things were not so bad. Leading us through our last year was quite a iob, planning the class trip, card party, and any number of things. But Paul Kudlica served as our last class president very well as did our vice-presi- dent, Jim Rakovan, and secretary, Minnie Barner. Mike Langevin broke Judy Lehner's bid for four years as class treasurer as he was elected for the tremendous iob. We planned our trip to New York City and kept plugging away all year long, for if you haven't guessed, we are proud of our days at Rossford High and will always remember them as the most happy of our young life. We traveled to New York to top off our high school days and were graduated on Friday evening, May twenty four, Nineteen hundred and fifty seven.
