Burns, Superintendent Sesqui-Centennial Thoughts The heritage of free Americans is the greatest birthright any people on the earth ever had. Great men wrote our constitution, courageous men cleared our wilderness and spanned the con- tinent, pioneer women contributed their sacrifice and toil. And in every generation there have been Americans who loved freedom more than life it- self--men who have fought that we might be free today. We owe it to them to preserve that freedom, what- ever the cost. And we owe it to those who come after us. For the American heritage belongs not only to us but to them. Congratulations, class of l953, on your choice of the State of Ohio Sesqui-Centennial theme for this year book. The one hundred fiftieth birth- day celebration of this great state will have real meaning if by a study of its past progress we are led to an even greater period of achievement. I envy you the chance you have to play an im- portant part in this new period. E. E. Andrews, Principal ig. 1 .W- c .Q Bnwwl nl fducation, 'VI-F 1 ? iq LEFT TO RIGHT. Superintendent G. H Burns, Dan Knurek, Earl Lewis, Vice President, Henry Werner, Jr,, President, Bernice Schroepel, Clerk, John Names, Stanley Gorka fAbsentJ Ever since the Northwest Ordinance of l787 was enacted, Ohio has been the nation's foremost leader in education. This Northwest Ordinance of l787 set aside the l6th tract of each township section to be used for the support of schools and it declared that schools and the means of education shall forever be encouraged. Through the stupendous efforts of the Boards of Education throughout the state, Ohio has built a well-organized school system that provides equal, educational opportunities for all. Rossford has not lagged behind in this development. Through the years its Board of Education has expanded the school facilities to absorb the in- creased enrollment. lt has supported various local levies to improve our schools and build new facilities. Indeed, it is such local Boards of Education as our Rossford one, that has made Ohio education what it is today. X' Jo Ellen Baggett Commercial J. W. MARGARET BEUTH Commercial Entered 2nd semester of senior year. 17 Jim gm wa fum J f As pioneering FRESHMEN, we settled four years ago under the exalted leadership of Anthony Zawojski, and his able crew consisting of Herb Young, vice president, Vince Langevin, secre- tary and treasurer, and john Doren, Sergeant at Arms. We were rather quiet then, but you learn fast here, and as the time went by we came to be .... THE SOPHOMORES of Rosstord High. That year was a huge success as everyone will agree. We were under the unbeatable command of lake Shufritz, and his round table, which held such notables as Herb Young, vice president, and jane Mathis, as sec- retary and treasurer. We had our skating party, the best one ever they said, but they'll be saying that to every class from here on in. Then we were IUNIORS, me oh my! We had a magazine campaign, which came out rather well, because the kids got out and really tried to sell. Our president was Vince Langevin, our vice president, Ray Furry, as secretary, Betty Key, treasurer, Martha Mathis, and reporter, Tom Minarcin, We mustn't forget the Ball you know, the biggest event of the year. You have to pick the time, the place, the way you'll comb your hair. That's all in the past now though. The fun we had that night! Now all we have is the ribbon from the corsage so soft, yet bright .... Now we are SENIORS, yes, it certainly took a long time, but all the memories we have built were worth those last three years. We're not sorry for the things we've done, no, not sorry at all. We're glad, in tact, for the things we've done, and the thought of our jobs well done. Our president was Ray Furry, vice president, Tom Minarcin, Betty Key was our secretary, and jake Shufritz, our treasurer. They were a great cabinet and did what could be done, and l suppose we had our share of tribulations and fun. No, these years won't be forgotten, not for many years, and later on they'll bring us joys and perhaps some happy tears. 5 J0 O X I 1 v ' . ' I P :fx df ma ,fi ,Lg X x'. Beck, C. Kustra, E. Lee-camera dodger. The '53 Journalism Class under the direction of Mr. Kohler published the i953 Maroon 6' Gray. The R-Echo was issued bi-monthly. Bob Caswall served as editor, Erma Lee as literary editor, and Herb Young was business manager. We decided on the theme of the Sesqui-centennial for our annual and discovered what pioneers in journalism we were. Everyone on the staff had an important job in that we were a close-knit organization that required and received the cooperation of every member. dt Cflnlzk C. Kustra A. Alexander R. Furry N. The Rossford Commercial Association consists of those girls and boys who are taking the Commercial course. Its purpose is to better educate the members in the clerical and stenographic field and to enlighten them as to the various types of jobs connected with the commercial department so that when they are ready to take on the responsibility of getting a job they will know definitely what they want. As an example of what the RCA has done, the members had the priv- ilege of meeting two women from the Ohio Bell Telephone Company. They spoke on the opportunities of a job at the Telephone Company and the many famous women in Ohio history. This program was set up to enable the men and women of tomorrow to be better acquainted with what is happening in their environment. This club is under the direction of Mrs. Jo Ellen Baggett and the cabinet consists of Betty Key, President, Tina Pietrasz, Vice-President, Lucille Duly, Secretary, Margie Pennese, Treasurer, Phyllis Stanford, Temporary Secre- tary, and Carolyn Minarcin, Recorder. imziufmg 'ngw FIRST ROW: M. They ran from a Split-T formation all season and are trying to improve this technique for varsity play in later years. This was an unusual year for the Junior High team in that their line outweighed the varsity line. We are expecting great things from this group of boys. Good luck, fellows.
