The following verse by Emerson, written in l863, still appropri- ately portrays the uncertainties of our present time. ln an age of fops and toys, Wanting wisdom, void of right, Who shall nerve heroic bays To hazard all in Freedom's fight- Break sharply off their jolly games, Forsake their comrades gay And quit proud homes and youthful dames For famine, toil, and fray? WEBB President Vice-President Clerk HEFLEETIUNS FUR 1951 When one ponders the fact that you, who graduate this year, have spent your formative years in an atmosphere of successive and continuing national and international crises, his congratulatory tribute is tinged with a bit of sadness and his voice evidences tremor. Your environment has been influenced by pressures of fears and normally carefree youth has a greatly sobered and prematurely serious respect for the uncertainties and vicissitudes of life. And the outlines of the future are frankly hazy and indistinct. You will want to dedicate and direct your unfolding efforts to the re- covery and enthronement of those basic principles which have imparted greatness to America, and have been long loved but among many lost awhile. The traditional American confidence has thinned out and, in places, disappeared. Confusion and compromise are on the daily menu. Lest we err in giving a localized flavor to our appraisal, let us ponder the fact that we are insufficiently impressed by the fact that every civilized country beyond the seas harbors countless thousands of people who would gladly sacrifice everything they possess in exchange for opportunities of life in the United States. Let us gird ourselves for the striving for recovery of lost values, a re- evaluation and high appreciation of the essential elements of faith and hope, and the preservation of the presently rather lonely spark of liberty.
