Che Kvssfard High Svhrwl ,fvurmzlism 611155 proudly Presents tilt' Zwcnfy- Zourfh Issue of the Marana my I llEllllIllTlllN We, the annual staff, of l95l, dedicate this twenty-fourth issue of the Maroon and Gray to the members of our community who are serving or have served their country. The following verse by Emerson, written in l863, still appropri- ately portrays the uncertainties of our present time. ln an age of fops and toys, Wanting wisdom, void of right, Who shall nerve heroic bays To hazard all in Freedom's fight- Break sharply off their jolly games, Forsake their comrades gay And quit proud homes and youthful dames For famine, toil, and fray? Yet on the nimble air benign Speed nimbler messages, That waft the breath of grace divine To hearts in sloth and ease. So nigh is grandeur to our dust, So near is God to man, When duty whispers low, Thou must, The youth replies, I can. Ralph Waldo Emerson TABLE ill? WEBB President Vice-President Clerk HEFLEETIUNS FUR 1951 When one ponders the fact that you, who graduate this year, have spent your formative years in an atmosphere of successive and continuing national and international crises, his congratulatory tribute is tinged with a bit of sadness and his voice evidences tremor. Your environment has been influenced by pressures of fears and normally carefree youth has a greatly sobered and prematurely serious respect for the uncertainties and vicissitudes of life. And the outlines of the future are frankly hazy and indistinct. You will want to dedicate and direct your unfolding efforts to the re- covery and enthronement of those basic principles which have imparted greatness to America, and have been long loved but among many lost awhile. The traditional American confidence has thinned out and, in places, disappeared. Confusion and compromise are on the daily menu. Lest we err in giving a localized flavor to our appraisal, let us ponder the fact that we are insufficiently impressed by the fact that every civilized country beyond the seas harbors countless thousands of people who would gladly sacrifice everything they possess in exchange for opportunities of life in the United States. Let us gird ourselves for the striving for recovery of lost values, a re- evaluation and high appreciation of the essential elements of faith and hope, and the preservation of the presently rather lonely spark of liberty. Courage, enthusiasm, correctly motivated endeavor, and faith will finally be tri- umphant. HENRY WERNER Bllllllll ElllllIllTIUN SUPERINTENIIENT CLASS OF 1951 - When we consider your class motto- Always room at the top -l believe it is well to ask, Why is there room at the top? First, let us consider it briefly from the ability standpoint. If those of greatest ability worked to near capacity then they would naturally hold the top positions, but most people are unwilling to do the necessary work, so the lack of ambition on their part provides openings at or near the top for those of lesser ability. Further, l like to think that with the great need for outstanding workers that we compete mostly with ourselves, the openings are there for the asking if we but prepare ourselves. So, to each member of the class of '51, may you point to a brighter, more successful future by always working near your level of ability. G. H. Burns PHlNlIlPllL Dr. Raymond B. Allen, president of the Univer- sity of Washington recently said The noblest end of education is the development of young men and women dedicated to useful lives of self-reliant citizenship and responsible leadership. The task of our schools in Rossford is both to help induct young people into adult-hood in our present society and to help them work toward the improvement of that society. Our schools must de- velop responsible citizens who willingly participate in public affairs and other forms of worthy civic activities. We must continue to develop in our young people the ideals and understanding that will lead them to contribute tothe continuous improve- ment of American life. Edgar E. Yes, the past four years have faded away, but the tasks we have accomplished in that time shall not be forgotten. Let us take an inventory of what we have really accomplished. Four years ago when we first began as Freshman, we seemed to be lost in a world of wonderment. But through the efforts of our faithful advisers, Miss Wagg, Miss Schaaf, and Mr. Troutner, and our fine staff of experienced teachers, we soon learned that high school was not a life of dreaded drudgery but instead a pleasant life of cultural experiences. That first year we elected the following class officers to help lead us the way to a very successful year: president, Richard Worchuck, and to assist him, Richard Sevenish as vice-president, as secretary and treasurer, Kathleen Durivage. As Sophomores, we seemed a little more experienced and sponsored such activities as the Sophomore Skating Party which was held at the Memorial Hall in Toledo. Our very capable advisers for that year were Mr. Long and Mrs. Steiner, and our hard working officers were Steve Kovacik as president, Richard Gwozdz as vice-president, Doris Mileski as secretary, and Molly Ann Vavrik as treasurer. ln our junior year, we sponsored the annual l-Hop which was held in the new field house. That year we were also the first junior class of Rossford High School to receive the Curtiss Circulation Company's award for out- standing accomplishments in the field of salesmanship for selling Sl,O23.95 worth of magazines. We also presented our play entitled Junior Prom in the high school auditorium. The play which proved to be a successful one, was under the direction of Mr. Troutner. One of the greatest events of the year was the junior-Senior Ball which was held at the Secor Ballroom. Our advisers that year were Mr. Wolfe and Mr. Butt, and our class officers were Helen Durco as president, Marilyn Zuchowski as vice-president, and Richard Worchuck as secretary and treasurer. And now as Seniors, we have had a very successful year. Among the annual events which we sponsored were the Senior Prom which was held in the new field house and the senior play entitled Cheaper by the Dozen, in the high school auditorium. The play again was under the direction of Mr. Troutner, The greatest event of this year was graduation night. lt was a night that we will remember as long as we live. The notes of the Processional and the recessional march will forever cling to our minds. Our advisers for this final year were Mr. Kohler and Mrs. Chamberlain. Our class officers were Edward Tucholski as president, Richard Sevenish as vice-president, loan Szychowski as secretary, and Douglas Howard as treasurer. Our class colors were blue and white, our class flower was the carnation, and our class motto was, There is always room at the top. lust what the future holds for us, we know not, but let us hope it will be successful, one that we have dreamed for in these past twelve years of school life. Let us hope that some day in the future we may all meet again, and until we do so, may God watch over us and take care of us. Twenty-three skidoo! GRADUATION NIGHT. NOT THE END, JUST THE BEGINNING! . .. The Maroon and Gray nl Libbey-Uwens-Ford You members of the graduating class of Rossford High School certainly are familiar with the Maroon and Gray of your school. But have you heard of the maroon and gray of Libbey- Owens-Ford? Employees in our huge Rossford plate glass plants see a mem- ber of the maroon family daily. lt is a color shade of rouge which polishes the surfaces of plate glass blanks to give a smooth, lustrous finish. Along the grinding and polishing lines where the outer roughness of the blanks is removed by giant and precision machinery, the maroon-color of the rouge is seen almost everywhere. The gray referred to is a popular shade of Vitrolitef struc- tural glass made by Libbey-Owens-Ford for use in kitchens, bathrooms and on storefronts. A recent survey showed gray to be one of the favored colors among the l2 which L-O-F makes. You'll remember Maroon and Gray as the years roll by. And Libbey-Owens-Ford will be using those colors to make more people happy with more and better glass. 4 IRI LIBBEY-OWENS-FORD Em' a Great Name in GLASS ss l FRAUTSCHI BRDS.
