The familiar surroundings, so recognizable, were practically changing daily, as they have always done so. Twenty years ago, R.S.S. became the second high school in town. Set down among the rice fields practically out in nowhere, the school now sits aside the rapidly-growing Baker and Garth intersection. In reality, this is the “new downtown, sprawling along in both directions up and down Garth Road. Just as the city has grown, so has the school. After its first nine-week grading period in 1967, Sterling enrollment was set at 1,209 but now, two decades later, the same facility — updated and expanded — held 2,589 students, a sure indication that even though things were always evolving, they were indeed changing ... in familiar surroundings.
