'G THE CROGHAN A PLAY IN FOUR ACTS Presented by the Senior Class of l948 Boss High School, Fremont, Ohio Looking at the great unceasing drama We call life, We feel that the small role We have played here in high school will better prepare us for the parts We Will step into as adults. We have attempted to fulfill the roles assigned to us in our high school drama. The drama is the We, the seniors of 1948, are now concluding part of the great drama we call life. Our year book leaves to the present and past students of Ross High school an account of the acts and scenes at our school. In years to come we will turn the pages of the Croghan and remember the wonderful times experi- book of the people Willmott enced here. By that time we will have embarked on an even greater drama in life-that of working together in friendship and harmony. It will depend upon the individual whether his own personal drama will be a success or a failure. The usual traffic jcrm between classes on the third floor is caught by our spotlight. Not only have we gained scholastic knowledge but also social poise which will prove of great importance. Many students earned scholarships and awards in scientific fields to help them in their future drama. Our dramatic talent was proven in our Iunior year when we presented January Thaw, which was widely acclaimed not only by fellow students but also by the adults in our community. In our senior year we presented Dear Ruth. a timely comedy which had previously been produced on Broadway. Many of our sports will be hard hit next year after losing many capable athletes in all varieties of athletic endeavor. STRING AND DANCE ORCHESTRA The string orchestra under Mr. Stierwalt, besides giving performances studied the lives cmd played the music of the world's greatest composers. Thus the members of this group, as well as learning to Work together, learned of the great pleasure that may be derived from an interest in serious music. Even for those of us who didn't like to dance, the dance band under Mr. Sells was a source of constant delight. Their up-to-date arrangements of popular tunes made after-the-game dances a school highlight. The dance band assembly, presented in February, Was one of the most enjoyable programs of the year. BAND Our band, under the leadership of Mr. Sells, proved their ability again this year by marching with precision as well as playing inspiring music. The band in their new uniiorms created a sen- sation at the first football game of the year. The excellent baton-twirling routines, always presented at half-time, were made even more enjoyable this year by the new uniforms of the drum majorettes. These uniforms glow in the dark when an ultra- violet light shines on them. The band, besides giving a winter concert, par- ticipated in the band festival in Fostoria and the district band contest in Bucyrus. Our band, always one of the top organizations in Ohio, once .more proved their reputation for fine music. 66 Row 1-Bill Suhrer, Martha Dippel, Mary Jane Michles, Dick Conley, Pat Huntzinger, Pat Rooks, Peggy Schellkopf, Irene Vargo, Geogia Leber, Pete Clawson. DRAMATICS 1 AND 2 The Dramatics I and II classes had a successful year under the super- vision of Miss Imogene Forsyth and Mr. H. Randall Miller. Most of their time was devoted to the class plays. The juniors chose as their play Life of the Party. Kay O'Farrel1 and Elise Truesdall played the part of a dull, studious girl who finally became a beautiful and popular girl. Iames Rothenberg did an excellent job as the father both nights. They were ably assisted by a large supporting cast. The seniors chose the popular Dear Ruth as their play Action cen- tered around the school girl who wrote to a soldier enclosing her sister's picture. During the year the classes staged a number of one-act plays and en- joyed a field trip to Toledo to see the play I Remember Mama. NATIONAL TI-IESPIAN SOCIETY In 1947 Fremont Boss High school was highly honored by being awarded a charter, number 793, in the National Thespian Dramatic Society. This organization in Boss High school is at present composed of thirty-five charter members representing the classes of 1947 and 1948. This year ap- proximately twenty new members from the class of 1949 will be brought into the group, and it is probable that ten or twelve additional members will be included after production of the senior class play. mi- 1www1.l ' Row Row Row Row 1, 2- 3.. 4.- Curtin, Mary Henkel, Carol Hudson. den, Norma Sampsel, Mary Ann Deters, Peggy Schellkopf. To be eligible for membership in this organization a student must have played a major role in a full-length play or two major roles in one-act plays or minor roles in two or three hill-length plays, or three or four one-act plays will be accepted if the amount of work done is equivalent to a major role in a full-length play. Membership is also granted to those students who have done superior Work as custodian of properties, or have held a responsible position in the production of a full-length play. When the student has gained ten points by these methods, he becomes a member of the troupe. The purpose of the National Thespian Society is the advancement of the dramatic arts in high schools. This organization has in the past and Will continue to contribute a great deal to the cultural development of our school, and also in the molding of personality traits so essential to good citizenship. F-CLUB Taking care of the most spectacular drama of the year were the boys in the F Club who played the leading parts on the gridiron, track, hardwood, tennis court and in the pool. The club is composed of those boys who have gained letters through their activities in athletics. As in past years members of the club sold ice cream bars, hot dogs, potato chips. pop corn and pop to the crowds at the bas- ketball and football games. The club was ably led by Butter Bis- choif as the president, Bob Heid as the vice president and Ierry Shannon as the secre- tary-treasurer. STUDENT COUNCIL In the production of a play, there are many laws concerning staging. lighting and costuming which are necessary for a finished production. Here at Boss, our Student Council had the task of making the laws We need for a good play. This year, under the direction of Mr. Ballenger, the group instituted a new lost-found program, a new cafeteria-line system, gave several all- school dances, and laid the groundwork for a first Ross handbook. Officers Were: Fred Lafferty, president: Bob Beeker, vice president: Sally Reardon, secretary, and Thelma Bates, treasurer. nm. f fur, , ' LIBRARY Press notices from the days of Homer through the Dark Ages, the Renaissance, cmd the American Revolution to our modern age have been collected and are on the shelves of our library. At all times of the day, some library staff members are on duty to check our books, shelve reading material, and run the library efficiently. This year, the library staff started a library annex in study hall 300 to aid students in reference work. Another service was offered in the form of the Teen Age book club which gave students the opportunity to obtain books at reduced cost. They also make out the absence reports every morning and afternoon, and they do a large amount of Work in the magazine drive. You can come in at any time during the day and find these girls busy in the completion of school material. Under the very able direction of Miss Lee, they learn how to use props such as the comptometer, adding machine, dictaphone, switch board, calculator and the mimeograph machine. That tantalizing odor is one that drifts from the cafeteria every morning as the cooks and their helpers in the first act of this play prepare that good lunch you'll eat at 11:30. The main character in this play is that favorite pie-baker of all the students Who, in real lite, is Mrs. Clara Gategar. This energetic lady bakes all pies and makes all hot dishes. Her delicious cherry and apple pies will long be remembered by the students at Ross. The kids always appreciate that hot lunch although they can't always express it every noon. Now, this is our chance to say thanks, Cookie, for the wonderful lunches. The one who has the supporting role is Mrs. Fanny Carper Who directs the student helpers in their Work. Working part time is Mrs. Lester Overmyer, Who makes all the sand- Wiches. And supervising these three cooks is Miss Birt, our school dietician. These cooks, along with their student helpers, in the second act, Work hard during the noon hour. The students first help serve the food and then comes the final act of Washing the dishes. After another year of preparing fine lunches for the students of Ross High, these students say thanks to the cooks and to their classmates who work hard every day in get- ting these lunches ready. FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA Vocational agriculture students have the privilege of belonging to a national organization known as the Future Farm- ers of America. 1002 of the students of vocational agriculture at Ross High are members of the Fremont Chapter which is considered to be one of the most active in the state. Their motto is, Learn to do - doing to learn - earning to live - learning to serve. Besides carrying an average of 3.5 projects per boy in their home farming program, the chapter has participated in several outstanding activities this year. They presented a radio program over WFRO, sponsored an assembly program, held their annual parent and son banquet, entered the district chapter procedure contest and public speaking contest, pre- sented several programs before farm organizations and service clubs, and entered the state livestock judging contest. They brought back many awards for their achievements during the year. Special recognition is given to the members who show outstanding achievements in farming ability, leadership, thrift, scholarship and cooperation. The ranks they may achieve are Green Hand, Chapter Farmer, State Farmer and American Farmer degrees. The Fremont Chapter was under the leadership of the following officers this year: President, Nelson Lindsay: vice president, Kenneth Root: secretary, Dan Michaels: treasurer, Iohn Auxter: librarian, Leon Leiser, and reporter, Nolan Gross. With the editor, Mary Ann Klos, and business manager, Molly Boyer, this group of seniors endeavored to present to its subscribers an accurate record of school life at Ross. Though the Weeks before the Annual went to press were hectic for all staff members, the pride we felt in the finished product more than repaid us for our efforts. The photographer with the terrific job of taking all senior and group pictures was Richard Townsend whose patience helped to make this job much less tedious. CHEERLEADERS The cheer leading squad played an important part at all the football and basketball games. With their leadership and the cooperation of the students the team knew that everyone was behind them, cheering them on. Each year two or three new cheerleaders are elected by the student body. Because of the large number of boys and girls interested, tryouts are limited to the Freshman and Sophomore classes. Under the capable guidance of Miss Grover the girls did a very good job of cheering this past year. Letters were awarded to co-captains Nancy Was- serman and Irene Vargo for three years of vigorous cheering. This last is quite important and fortunately in our high school the G.A.A. takes care of this development. It improves the girls' health, sportsmanship, and mental thinking. The G.A.A. has a well filled calendar year. They attend play days at various schools in the district, give their own play day, a Sadie Hawkins dance, and for the climax of the year, the G.A.A. banquet. Officers of the association are: Dorothy Babione, President: Sally Rear- don, vice president: Joanne Houghtaling, secretary: Alice Babione, treasurer: Wanda Smith registrar of points, and Miss Gertrude Bliss as the advisor.
